StraightOutside · 19/07/2021 15:07

Percy from The Green Mile is on my list
The Captain from Pan's Labyrinth.
At least Half of the characters in Wuthering Heights.

There's a lot more but my mind has just gone blank.

Who are your nominations?

Captain Jack Randall from Outlander, esp as portrayed by the very brilliant Tobias Menzies in the TV show. He should have won every single award going for that role.

Rysimo · 19/07/2021 18:54

Dick AND Nicole Diver, Tender Is The Night. Two of the most vacuous and self involved characters in literature.

jaundicedoutlook · 19/07/2021 18:55

Steerpike
James Bond
Bayaz
Keith Talent
That tedious bloke who just goes on and on about agricultural theory in Anna Karenina and whose name I can’t be bothered to look up because it will make me overcome with enervation.

Mochudubh · 19/07/2021 19:17

Both Jane Eyre and Rochester.

CarolinaWeeper · 19/07/2021 19:28

Gus Fring in Breaking Bad.

Also, Peter Rabbit.

theproudgeek · 19/07/2021 19:41

Yes to Angel Claire.
Yes to the trio in Twelfth Night who trick Malvolio - humiliation is not humour.
Malcom Merlin from Arrow just needs to stop and go away, even his idea of helping is evil.
The worst might be from radio, Rob Titchener from The Archers. Kudos to the actor who did such a good job I couldn't listen.

Anordinarymum · 19/07/2021 19:41

Anything... anything whether it be film or TV with James Cordern in it

Nohomemadecandles · 19/07/2021 19:42

The dude that Pete Postlethwaite played in Sharpe

theproudgeek · 19/07/2021 19:43

@CarolinaWeeper

Gus Fring in Breaking Bad.

Also, Peter Rabbit.

Oh yes, my children are well aware that Mr McGregor is the victim in that story and Peter an unrepentant thief who deserves to be made into pie.
EmmaGrundyForPM · 19/07/2021 19:46

Kayser Soyzay, obviously.

Totally agree about Angel Clare.

Livingtothefull · 19/07/2021 19:59

Another one for Angel Clare. When he finds Tess again and she tells him it's 'too late' because her circumstances forced her to go back to Alec....the irony of that scene that it is the very last chance for her, the last moment it is actually NOT too late.

If only he had done something - anything - to claim Tess and stand up for her at that stage. But no he just scurries away instead. A total let down to the very end.

TheDuck2018 · 19/07/2021 19:59

The fucking pigs in Animal Farm....poor poor Boxer Sad

Anon778833 · 19/07/2021 20:01

Cathy in East of Eden

Anon778833 · 19/07/2021 20:02

Angel Clare is indeed a total dickhead

Tempusfudgeit · 19/07/2021 20:03

Reuben from Black Beauty - but at least he got his comeuppance!

Mommybunny · 19/07/2021 20:07

George Warleggan from Poldark.

DuckonaBike · 19/07/2021 20:08

Ellen Oledzka in The age of Innocence. Scheming manipulative bitch who sets out to seduce her cousin’s husband.

Someone mentioned The Great Gatsby and Tom Buchanan has to be one of the biggest tossers in literature.

And Angel Clare, obvs.

Notashandyta · 19/07/2021 20:09

Can't believe it hasn't been said already-

Nurse Ratchet.

Terrifying cause there are folks like her in jobs with the vulnerable up and down the country

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 19/07/2021 20:10

Now and forever: Dawson Leery.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 19/07/2021 20:11

Can't remember her name but the manipulative Glenn Close character in Dangerous Liaisons

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/07/2021 20:13

Does Rob Titchener in The Archers count? If so, he gets my vote.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 19/07/2021 20:15

Randall Flagg.
Yes to Percy in The Green Mile, played so brilliantly that I hate the actor!
Bellatrix Lestrange.

QueSeraSarah · 19/07/2021 20:16

JR Ewing

CrouchEndTiger12 · 19/07/2021 20:21

Abigail Williams from Arthur Miller's The Crucible.

Chilling to the core

She is a vengeful, selfish, manipulative liar. ma

Spreading death and destruction wherever she goes. Awesome sense of how to gaslight others and gain control over them.

Awesome in macabre way.

PetronellaPea · 19/07/2021 20:23

“Who gives a fuck if he is? He's a cunt. His Dad was a cunt and one day he'll have a load of cunty kids. As far as I'm concerned Harry Brown's doing us a favour!"

Absolutely love this quote from Harry Brown! Pure class.

100% agree with Percy (Green Mile) and the Captain (Pan’s Labyrinth)

I also nominate:

  • Nicolette from Neighbours (stole from a dead patient and I’m pretty sure is going to run off with David and Aaron’s baby! She’s a manipulative snake)
  • Richard Strickland in The Shape of Water (wonderfully, most evilly played by Michael Shannon)
