How to get used to the taste of coffee?

frustratedwiththepandemic · 18/07/2021 09:27

I'm relying heavily on full fat fizzy drinks to get me going either in the morning or throughout the day. Not everyday but some days. I want to switch to coffee but can't stand the taste! Any tips?

Water it down and drink black.

What about fruit teas? Lots of flavours. As they are served without milk, they are low in calories

pigeonhole · 18/07/2021 09:32

Please check your whole diet first You shouldn't need anything to get you going , using coffee and full fat fizzy drinks / energy drinks for this is not very healthy , make sure your blood sugar levels are correct and you are eating a healthy diet sufficient for your energy needs , get your thyroid checked if you are showing symptoms that relate to it
Stimulant drinks should be occasional and for pleasure

Mocha is usually the gateway drink. It's coffee and hot chocolate and lots of milk. From there onto a latte with a flavoured syrup.

You'll be drinking espressos and large black americanos before you know it.

Drink tea instead.

tiredanddangerous · 18/07/2021 09:39

Make a latte with skimmed milk and add a shot of sugar free flavoured syrup?

If it's the caffeine you're after why not diet coke?

Mabelface · 18/07/2021 09:42

I started with mocha, then skinny lattes with a bit of sugar. I now love coffee, with or without milk and no sugar.

BaronessBomburst · 18/07/2021 09:43

I worked some insane shift patterns in my time and actually found it was easier when I stayed off the coffee. I used to drink lots and lots of water and snack on fruit.

Soubriquet · 18/07/2021 09:43

What about tea instead? Or hot chocolate? Both have caffeine in

I don’t drink coffee. Don’t like it. Tried the whole latte route and still didn’t like it.

kowari · 18/07/2021 09:52

I did it differently to the mocha route. I just jumped in the deep end as a teen, black coffee and drank it slowly, focusing on what I could taste. Repeat ten or fifteen times. Don't try not to taste it. Don't think of it as a negative and stay in the moment.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 18/07/2021 09:54

For me it was starting with lattes with syrup and sugar but why substitute one not great drink for another? Especially one you don’t like?! I’d start weaning yourself off the fizzy, just drop a can / glass a day and replace with fruit infused water or a herbal tea or something, and as a PP said definitely look at your diet / health if your struggling without. You’ll probably find you’re having sugar highs / crashes.

Thanks all will take it all on board. I suffer from a lot of brain fog (fibromyalgia) and limit sugar otherwise but find the caffeine helps me

I thought coffee would be better than hot chocolate (sugar?) or Diet Coke (the artificial sweeteners affect the gut)

I won't be having more than 1 coffee in the morning.

I didn't think it would give me what I needed? But will give it a try. Maybe I could alternate them

Coffee tastes awful. It smell even worse.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 18/07/2021 10:39

You could try green tea for a caffeine fix with health benefits.

I buy my dh L’or coffee and lately, everyone he opens a new one, it randomly smells like soiled kitty litter Envy

Even dh agrees it doesn’t smell pleasant. Once it’s been put in the coffee jar and not in sealed conditions, it smells like coffee but for the first hour or so, it’s kitty litter

BillyIsMyBunny · 18/07/2021 10:46

I started only being able to drink weak milky mochas or lattes with lots of sugar but then have gradually been able to wean myself down. I still don’t drink it black but don’t need much milk and can drink it strong now, I still have half a sugar as a preference but don’t need it.

If you’re trying not to drink sugar maybe start with a weak, milky coffee with sweeteners in it until it is tolerable (even if not enjoyable for you). Persevere with drinking it until eventually you will get used to it and no doubt come to enjoy it, and then it’s just a case of weaning yourself off the milk and sweetener by dropping it down a little at a time and gradually adding more coffee until you’ve got a stronger drink. That’s how I did it anyway.

BillyIsMyBunny · 18/07/2021 10:49

Also if it is only the caffeine you need could you look at alternative methods of getting caffeine such as Pro-Plus caffeine tablets?

Each to their own, I love the taste of coffee and think tea tastes awful.
jerometheturnipking · 18/07/2021 10:53

If you don’t like the taste of coffee, switch to Coke Zero or equivalent.

Tea, green tea contain caffeine too.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 18/07/2021 10:54

I would say cut out the sugary drinks, gradually if needs be, and try to become less reliant on caffeine.

I don't like tea or coffee but i so like hot chocolate so I occasionally get half a shot or a shot of espresso in my hot chocolate if I want some caffeine.

kowari · 18/07/2021 10:57

Eat extremely dark chocolate?

I've never had hot chocolate make me feel very awake and for tea you have to drink quite a bit more than you would with coffee.

I don't drink real coffee, but I'll have moccas, capuccinos and lattes and I suppose I could transition.

This should be last resort imo.
