How to get used to the taste of coffee?

I'm relying heavily on full fat fizzy drinks to get me going either in the morning or throughout the day. Not everyday but some days. I want to switch to coffee but can't stand the taste! Any tips?

Heard that electrolytes are a great start to help with early morning dehydration and give your body a kick start.

This should be last resort imo.

Why? Is there a difference in caffeine ingested through drinking coffee and caffeine ingested through taking a pill? One pro-plus pill contains 50mg of caffeine whereas a cup of coffee can vary hugely depending on type (instant or brewed, brand. type of beans, size of drink, brewing process etc) so it’s harder to monitor your caffeine intake if you’re drinking coffee compared to by taking a pill.

Look alongside this at ways to make sure you do not need this at all. What may seem minor changes can help. New pillows, perhaps no screen time for an hour before bed, for example.

The problem with caffeine and similar is that you’re borrowing energy from it and will have to repay with interest at some point.

lljkk · 18/07/2021 11:32

if you find the content tables, average tea is about half the caffeine content of coffee; strong black tea is about the same caffeine content.

Green tea is maybe half the caffeine content as black tea.

It sounds like OP might be quite caffeine insensitive -- she needs a lot to affect her.

@frustratedwiththepandemic it was on the minimalists podcast, talking about how water and caffeine can actually dehydrate you as you are already dehydrated when you wake up. Mineral waters are super hydrating and add magnesium, potassium and sodium to the body.

They recommended the brand Elements. A few flavours including a chocolate one which dissolves best in hot water if a hot drink is what you fancy

PandemicPalava · 18/07/2021 11:34

@frustratedwiththepandemic there are also ways to make your own when pink salt and lemons but they didn't go into detail on that

My husband was a hater , he adds some syrup now and frothy milk and loves it but he wouldn’t dream of drinking it black like I do

warmfluffytowels · 18/07/2021 11:52

What about iced coffee with flavoured syrup? You can buy it pre-made or make your own.

Ugzbugz · 18/07/2021 12:13

Coffee is absolute filth. Why bother just have water and cut back on the cans slowly.

Edmontine · 18/07/2021 12:49

Goodness ... I couldn't live without the first cup in the morning, but I'd never drink it black.

You need a ritual, OP. Invest in a decent coffee grinder (manual is best for exercise) and some way of brewing. Then order freshly ground beans. After all that you'll have no option but to fall in love with the taste. But you need slightly warmed milk and a touch of sugar. Not black!

Mintjulia · 18/07/2021 12:53

If you don't like coffee, have something else. Water is fine.

Choose a low Gi breakfast with some sugar. I have porridge with a spoon of Honey or Nutella on. The sugar gets me moving and then the porridge maintains my energy until lunch.

Celandines · 18/07/2021 12:55

You could start off with mellow birds, then nescafe, then azera, then ground coffee.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/07/2021 14:08

2 shots espresso, top up with milk, 2 minutes in microwave on medium heat.

I have two every morning and then no more caffeine all day.

AbsolutelySure · 18/07/2021 14:13

I didn't start drinking coffee until my mid 30's. Always loved the smell of freshly ground coffee but not the taste. I wanted to be a coffee drinker though so just persisted and added sugar until it was drinkable. Gradually lessened the sugar to none

roguetomato · 18/07/2021 14:16

It's either you like it or not, isn't it? I don't understand why you need to get used to it if you don't like the taste of it. I like both tea and coffee. My dh hates coffee. My ds hates tea. We just drink what we like.
