Should I try to become PM?

Just that really. NC.
I have no experience in politics. I’m mid 40s, married with DC, NHS Dr. I spend most of my life trying to avoid conflict…..but I’m pretty thick skinned. Politically I don’t fall neatly with either main party ;labour is too socialist and the Tories…..well where to start really. I just listen to the daily spin and lies and chumocracy and think ‘there has to be someone else who can lead better than this’….but apparently there isn’t. I think my 10 year old could do a better job….and failing that, what about me? I think I’d have to start a whole new party. I don’t know what I’d call it. Is it even worth trying? And where would I start? And why won’t someone else do this as I’m sure there are lots of people significantly more qualified than me who would be much better. Where are you hiding??

It's not necessarily about how qualified you are. It's more about connections and how much money you have.

Bananarama101 · 17/07/2021 21:56

I think the main qualifying question is were you in the Bullingdon Club? If not, then it's probably a no

SisforSarah · 17/07/2021 21:57

I have no connections. I earn an NHS consultant salary…..so we aren’t close to the breadline.
I think that’s my point though…..is it possible to make it in politics without arselicking, back scratching and outright lying. Is it possible to make a party of honest people who genuinely want the best for the country rather than lining their pockets or those of their mates?

@Bananarama101…..I didn’t go to
Oxbridge.
Again….that’s kind of what I’m aiming at. Are there enough honest, earnest people(preferably women) who want to give this a go?

Yeo

Bryonyshcmyony · 17/07/2021 22:01

Yep!

Newchallenge · 17/07/2021 22:01

I like it. NHS nurse here, I'll join you.

Bryonyshcmyony · 17/07/2021 22:03

I totally want to be PM

or maybe deputy op

Weebleweeble · 17/07/2021 22:03

You'd have to stand as an indpendent. But I'm not sure how much influence you'd have in parliament as an individual and not part of a party.

StarryStarrySocks · 17/07/2021 22:04

I have no experience in politics
You don't say! You start by becoming an MP. Then party leader. Then PM. You can't just go straight for the top job!

OublietteBravo · 17/07/2021 22:04

Surely it’s easier to take over an existing party than try to form a new one? I wonder how many people you’d need to do so - I expect it’s less than you’d think.

ssd · 17/07/2021 22:04

Let me see. Can you convince ordinary working class people that you'll help them, even though you wouldn't spit on them if they were on fire? If you can do that you're a sho-in

EmergencyHydrangea · 17/07/2021 22:05

Couldn't do a worse job

SisforSarah · 17/07/2021 22:08

@StarryStarrySocks wasn’t it Macron who became president within 18 months of starting his political career. I’d like to make a difference……sooner rather than later….unfortunately that cuts out 10 years of sitting on parish council lettings discussing dog poo before becoming an MP

OP posts:
Lolalovesmarmite · 17/07/2021 22:10

I would love to see a new party break through. I don’t want to vote for any of the existing parties but the obstacles to a new party in the UK are almost insurmountably huge. Macron managed it in France, but I think the French have more of a rebellious, revolutionary spirit. Politics needs more honesty, more compassion and less spin. You would probably be better joining the existing party that most closely aligned with your ideals and trying to change it from the inside out.

SisforSarah · 17/07/2021 22:12

@ssd , but I would spit on them when they were on fire. I’d get the hose, I’d get my neighbours hose, I’d get everyone on the street with a hose. I might be less inclined to get the hose if they still lived in a council house despite winning the lottery 10 years ago to the tune of 20million, but won’t move out ‘because it’s my home’.

SisforSarah · 17/07/2021 22:14

@Lolalovesmarmite I work in the NHS. It’s like trying to turn the titantic. Hence the outset idea to nab the top job. Change by example from the top down.

OP posts:
SisforSarah · 17/07/2021 22:18

@Lolalovesmarmite but how would it work if I said ‘right, I’m forming this new party. I’m the leader, followers sign up here’. I need someone new to stand in every constituency. This is our manifesto. Obviously everyone who wanted to stand could. I’d probably need a zoom
Meeting to get everyone together and thrash out a manifesto. There would need to be compromise as a random group of people won’t agree on everything. But I’d just like to be lead by honest, normal people who live by decent values and answer honestly when interviewed. I’m so bored and fed up with lives and distorted truths.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 17/07/2021 22:20

You sound bonkers and, as someone else has pointed out, it would be functionally impossible for you to become prime minister without joining one of the main parties. That said, I'd happily give you a go if it meant getting rid of Boris Johnson.

Have you thought of overthrowing the monarchy and becoming the first UK president? That could work.

HugoToWin · 17/07/2021 22:23

I'd back you OP. I have been saying they need a bunch of post menopausal women with teenagers in the top jobs and we'd have sorted this nonsense in no time. Failing that, you sound perfect.

LemonSwan · 17/07/2021 22:24

As a swing voter I would happily join a centre party of sane, reasonable and common sense politics.

If thats where your going, would be excited to follow Grin

SisforSarah · 17/07/2021 22:27

@JackieCollinshasnoauthority 😂. I quite like the monarchy…esp the slimmed down version.
But why would it be impossible…other than ‘everyone’ says so? Boris is hopeless. Utterly hopeless. Is he honestly the best we have? As I’ve said previously, I’m sure there are many far better qualified people for this than me, but if no one else is prepared to take it on……and just for the record, I quite like my semi in The countryside I have no desire to live in London and weekend in chequers and hobnob with people who think they are important.

OP posts:
Garfunkle · 17/07/2021 22:28

A new party is needed. Go for it OP. Nobody could be worse than our current PM - or the Leader of the opposition. Waste of bloody time and taxpayers cash the both of them.

What’s your party to be called? Just so we know who to vote for 😊

beigebrownblue · 17/07/2021 22:29

You couldn't possibly do any worse than the one we've got.

You are a mother.

Boris couldn't organise his way out of a paper bag.

You have done it already.

If we handled our jobs as mothers (and it is a job) in the way that Boris has, our kids would have gone in to care years ago.

Go for it.

beigebrownblue · 17/07/2021 22:29

And nothing wrong with standing as an independent.
