Should I try to become PM?

Just that really. NC.
I have no experience in politics. I’m mid 40s, married with DC, NHS Dr. I spend most of my life trying to avoid conflict…..but I’m pretty thick skinned. Politically I don’t fall neatly with either main party ;labour is too socialist and the Tories…..well where to start really. I just listen to the daily spin and lies and chumocracy and think ‘there has to be someone else who can lead better than this’….but apparently there isn’t. I think my 10 year old could do a better job….and failing that, what about me? I think I’d have to start a whole new party. I don’t know what I’d call it. Is it even worth trying? And where would I start? And why won’t someone else do this as I’m sure there are lots of people significantly more qualified than me who would be much better. Where are you hiding??

@Graphista I’ve long thought exactly the same as you- we should have experts in that field as our ministers. NOt just Tim Tim nice but dim who went to the same private school as PM

ssd · 18/07/2021 08:08

@SisforSarah, you earn an nhs consultant's salary . No idea what that is, but a fair whack i imagine.

Be honest, do you normally vote tory but are a but pissed off with them?

mellongoose · 18/07/2021 08:20

You will take a hefty pay drop from and NHS consultant to MP but hopefully you're in it to help people, so that won't matter 👍

I'd definitely be up for this. I've always said I can't believe that in a nation of 65million people they are the best 635 we can find to run the country. A PP said "join the Lib Dem's" and this might be a good call. Established party, needs more MPs. Get in there and help shape strategy, be a voice of reason. I'm off to Google how to join.....

JumpLeadsForTwo · 18/07/2021 09:04

Public school gives them the confidence and connections. Surely through the power of Mumsnet, we can replicate this Grin

HotPenguin · 18/07/2021 10:03

I think you should go for it. You would probably have a better chance in the Labour party being a doctor and middle of the road, you can try bringing it back to the centre ground. There's also been "save the NHS" candidates in the past

Weebleweeble · 18/07/2021 11:19

I don't like the Tories but I am concerned about women's sport. I don't think there's anyone else.

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 18/07/2021 12:40

@AtrociousCircumstance

If you’re GC I’m already organising a fundraiser for you.
I'm with you here 💪
Geepee71 · 18/07/2021 13:00

Go for it.

My cat could do a better job than the current lot.

Mind I do think that anyone who wants to be PM, probably isn't qualified to do it!

Polkadots2021 · 18/07/2021 14:25
@ssd , but I would spit on them when they were on fire. I’d get the hose, I’d get my neighbours hose, I’d get everyone on the street with a hose. I might be less inclined to get the hose if they still lived in a council house despite winning the lottery 10 years ago to the tune of 20million, but won’t move out ‘because it’s my home’.
Sadly this probably won't work because you won't have also built a massive propaganda campaign, positioned yourself as the feckless bloke from down the pub and clearly have a moral compass and some basic standards holding you back...it's basically the story of the Lib Dems but much smaller...

Graphista · 18/07/2021 17:34

@Phoenixrising2020 thanks

I'd join the lib dems if I were you. Lib Dem's have gone right down the twaw rabbit hole, they're also fairly right wing policy wise

@JuneJuly great minds...

@Orangeinmybluelightcup gerrymandering - it's disgusting!

I would suggest an honest talk with an honest politician - try Jess Phillips.

Sarcasm? She's been caught in several lies

@Aspiringmatriarch I like "represent"

I think having more normal women in politics (not handmaidens or pretend men) is the answer. I've thought about standing against my completely crazy mp.

Omg yes!

@Makingnumber2 drives me demented when the cabinet positions are filled by people with fuck all clue about the area they're administrating!

I've always said I can't believe that in a nation of 65million people they are the best 635 we can find to run the country.

A huge problem is the scrutiny anyone standing would come under. Everyone has "skeletons" in the closet and these days they would come out, so the person standing AND their families have to be able to cope with that, plus all the abuse - msm and sm

ginislife · 18/07/2021 21:34

@Graphista that's a good point about skeletons. Maybe I'll run the fund raising. More skeletons in my closet than in the local graveyard !! 😂😂

Mischance · 18/07/2021 21:40

I read a very interesting book - can't remember the name - by a female political journalist and she outlined the steady path towards corruption that attends all MPs once the first flush of idealism has been kicked into touch by the sick system at Westminster, where they find themselves powerless to do all they planned and represent their constituents, so they get sucked into the hypocrisy. God, it was a depressing book.

Graphista · 19/07/2021 01:09

@ginislife yes I've led a...colourful life too. Largely informed by childhood abuse but it would be more than I could cope with.

We need a revolution really, a peaceful one of course, but a revolution all the same.

The current political system we have is NOT serving the people.

Piglet89 · 19/07/2021 06:18

I am actually confident I could lead the country better than our current PM - but that is chiefly because he is so UTTERLY, IRREDEEMABLY WOEFUL.

I will say that I am totally fed up of being led by people who have got to where they are because of their privileged educations and wealth. I have thought of going into politics, but it’s a dirty, dirty game and, particularly at the top, I think one’s family life really suffers.

If you’re doing the job properly, it’s completely all-consuming.

Very often, the types of characters who have the ruthlessness to rise to the top in politics are exactly the type who can’t be relied upon to “do the right thing”.

Yes Minister scripts and plots from the 80s remain as relevant now as they were then and they’re a masterclass in the lying and manipulation that goes on.

Piglet89 · 19/07/2021 06:19

@Mischance sadly, that sounds about right.
