I never bake my kids' birthday cakes. I can buy a very good supermarket one or pay someone to produce something that looks better than what I can do and has cost me less.

I won't do role playing with them. There are no scarier words than "mummy will you play with me - you be the dog and I'll be the owner". I apparently do it ALL WRONG anyway, I usually say something like "instead, why don't we do some painting" or I even say I'm busy. And I thank God every day the days of playing tea parties are over. Me perched on a very uncomfortable toadstool seat pretending to sip tea from a singing Fisher Price teacup for 2 hours and doing it wrong anyway 😂

Another that doesn't let them climb up the slide and shocked myself at a kid's birthday party when I told ds loudly that he knows not to do it (every other child in the place was doing it and most of the mothers looked shocked I said it).

Won't let them be all over dogs
Won't let them on social media (2 have phones)
Won't sit reading while they're at soft play (I watch or join in)
Won't let them have chewing gum or bubble gum

@OnTheBrink1

Not always. My boss always insists on making her kid’s birthday cakes but they taste horrible 😂

EspressoDoubleShot · 17/07/2021 23:32

I have passed off shop bought cakes as homemade when I had to
Slightly bash cake, make it a bit squonky, dust with icing sugar or make butter icing

Homemade cakes are so easy to make and absolutely delicious
Mmm, not sure that’s the case with every single cake. I’ve tasted some really awful home made ones. 🤢

GrasssInPocket · 17/07/2021 23:36

Ignoring earsplitting shrieking...

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 17/07/2021 23:42
  • giving pocket money
  • allowing dummies over the age of 9 months
  • bullshit about tooth fairy
  • putting baby on their back to sleep. it never worked with mine, they slept on their side until they could move and extend sleep positions to hedgehog, starfish, blooming tree, rat race, green man etc
EspressoDoubleShot · 17/07/2021 23:45

My kids all have and love toy guns. Ohh big bastard and water soakers

NameChange2PostThis · 17/07/2021 23:46

I don’t care who you are or what generous gift you have given my child or how far you have travelled or how long it will be until we see you again - I will never make my child kiss you, hug you, or allow you to do the same to them without their permission. Their body, their choice.

No pocket money - we just give the kids cash when they need it.
And no regular chores here.
And I have never withheld pudding.

Tombero · 17/07/2021 23:46

This thread has really helped me. The other day mine were upset that I never let them do Build a Bear, acting like their childhood was in tatters. And I felt awful at the time.

If push comes to shove I now have a list of lots of stuff I did do (under duress) to answer them with Grin

Oh shame! I wonder if she liked them? Also wonder where she was going wrong!
I am always so surprised people find it hard to bake- it’s literally only sugar eggs butter and self raising flour with a bit of vanilla. Whack it all together and put in a pan sprayed with cake release spray. Bake. Done!

irresistibleoverwhelm · 17/07/2021 23:49

Tombero it’ll be a cold day in hell before I ever set foot in a Build-a-Bear Grin

Same with LOL surprise and all that kind of thing. DD knows not to ask now - I buy her lots of things but overpriced ugly tat is a no-no no matter who has it!

100% the same

I also let them eat on the sofa watching tv (sandwiches, pizza, non-spillystuff)
I do it. so why couldn't they?
I also let them lick their plates. it's fun and less work for the dishwasher 🤣

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/07/2021 23:50

@OnTheBrink1 no idea, they just always taste of a kitchen sponge. I suspect it’s because she over beats and scrimps on the sugar Wink

Sparklingbrook · 17/07/2021 23:51

I am always so surprised people find it hard to bake

It’s not hard to make a simple sponge (and that’s not always what’s requested TBF) but I CBA and the local cake maker enjoys it and makes a living from it so it’s all good.

FakeColinCaterpillar · 17/07/2021 23:52

Build a bear is shit. DD got given a voucher and it still cost me a bloody fortune for a bloody teddy.
SIL used to take her kids once a week in the summer hols, then complain she was skint and had no money for activities, wonder why?

omgthepain · 17/07/2021 23:52

I don't allow any food or drink upstairs the only thing anyone takes is a water
Bottle nothing else

I cringe hearing stories of mouldy plates and cups in bedrooms

Why do people allow this? It's a filthy habit

omgthepain · 17/07/2021 23:53

@FakeColinCaterpillar
My kids have a £20
Build a
Bear
Voucher each what will that get me?? An arm or a leg 🤣🤣🤣

MrsMiddleMother · 17/07/2021 23:53

Never do controlled crying
No strict routine
Let them drink juice

No climbing up the slide.

EspressoDoubleShot · 17/07/2021 23:54

*I am always so surprised people find it hard to bake^. It’s not hard just can’t be bothered

RampantIvy · 17/07/2021 23:55

I never buy DD's birthday cakes, and always bake for her birthday. IMO you can't beat good home baking.

Curbaisti · 17/07/2021 23:55

Its very much recommended for children with SN (like i have) it strengthens all those muscles for speech and hand writing. Presume its no harm for NT children either as always on their backs

I allow food in bedrooms provided the plates and cups come down each night. No mould here.
CuteOrangeElephant · 17/07/2021 23:59

My almost 4 year old DD has barely any electronic toys. I refuse to buy them and all family members are well aware of my preference.

Can't stand the sound and jingles that especially Vtech toys make.

PerciphonePuma · 18/07/2021 00:09

@Ragwort

Loads ... I never understood the comment 'I can't even go to the toilet/have a shower in peace'.

Never co slept, never fed my baby to sleep. Certainly never shared a bath or shower with my DC.

Elf on the shelf.

I quite enjoyed baking birthday cakes until the year my DS begged me for a 'shop cake' Grin

Role play, in fact any sort of "play" apart from board games or sporty stuff.

Never took my DC to theme parks etc

Refused to do 'trick or treat' ... one year he really wanted to so DH took him ... came back after 10 minutes saying what a waste of time it was!

You never played with your kids??? Sad Never took them to any theme parks? Oh that's so so sad Sad
