Twelve months before the Olympics start you receive a letter to tell you which event you'll be taking part in. You are given paid leave and childcare, and all equipment is provided. Like jury service, this is not optional.

Which event would you most want to be picked for, and which would be your worst nightmare?

I'd like to do the ribbony gymnastics thing.
I'd probably stand the best chance at karate.
Nothing to do with swimming, diving or water generally, because I am shit at swimming. Unless there's an Olympic Slowest Swimmer With Occasional Foot On Floor event, in which case I could do that.

If it's winter I'd deffo want to do skiing. I've never been but I'm absolutely positive I'd be awesome at it Grin

FaceyRomford · 16/07/2021 22:45

I call on you all to sign my petition to make doughnut eating an Olympic sport.

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/07/2021 22:46

Is like to do curling please, so I'll have to defer. Or if I it has to be in the summer then I'll take archery, I reckon a year would get me good enough not to make a complete fool of myself.

I do NOT want to do running, jumping or gymnastics!!!

Dream: Shooting (another ancient marksman here) or Archery.

Nightmare: having to swim or run or basically move about in a co-ordinated manner.

Blurp · 16/07/2021 22:48

If everyone's entering, then presumably I have a reasonable chance of not being the worst in the earliest rounds, right?

If I had the skill, I'd love to do gymnastics. If it was based on my current abilities, probably cycling would be least embarrassing!

Lotsachocolateplease · 16/07/2021 22:49

I am the most unco-ordinated non sporty person I know, Britain would not want me on their Olympic team
Can I please run the cake stall - I can do cake

Eskarina1 · 16/07/2021 22:53

Do you get training once picked. My childhood dream was to do competitive gymnastics. I loved Nadia Comaneci.

Want to avoid any team sports - relay, synchronized swimming etc. I am not going to be good at anything so ideally don't want to let anyone else down

bluechameleon · 16/07/2021 22:57

Anything involving balls would be a disaster (tennis, football, rhythmic gymnastics etc). I am the least sporty person ever but I think my best shot would be at something swimming related. Or maybe sprinting?

FakeColinCaterpillar · 16/07/2021 22:58

I’d want to do synchronised swimming and refuse to put my face in the water.

My high dive would be lowering myself in from the side of the pool.

RoseMartha · 16/07/2021 23:01

Table tennis or badminton

LadyBonnibel · 16/07/2021 23:02

Best: Tidying
Worst: Chit-chat

In real sports, I like the idea of pole vault, because it looks like fun and kind of easy though of course it's probably about 40,000 times harder than it looks and my pole would snap.

I'm totally shit at any team sport. Probably hockey would be my worst of all, I was so spectacularly bad at it at school that the teacher would put me in a team with all the best players and put me in goal so I had nothing to do 😂

LadyBonnibel · 16/07/2021 23:03

The Olympics would be so much more watchable if this was reality!

gogohm · 16/07/2021 23:04

Is there competitive cake baking? How about monopoly, I'm good at that Grin. Sports tough, um, 5km I suppose as I do Parkrun, well did, might need to walk part the way now

Mogloveseggs · 16/07/2021 23:08

Dh picked long jump and hated would be javelin
Me table tennis and hated would be diving. If I could jump to the Winter Olympics I'd do cross country skiing it looks fun!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 16/07/2021 23:09

I'd be a paralympian.

Still shit, but at least I'd be spared the expectation to take part in something I would never be able to attempt - and perhaps then people would realise that Paralympians are just as remarkable athletes compared to normal disabled people as those in the Olympics are completely different to everybody else, so people in the same medical/physical position as me would no longer hear 'but look at x in the Paralympics - they manage to be an elite competitor, so why don't you think like them and stop moaning about the shit access to jobs, shops or offices and bus drivers who won't tell buggy owners to get out of the wheelchair spaces?'

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/07/2021 23:21

I shat myself then. I thought it was true. Blush😂😂😂😂.
Maybe swimming

TimeIhadaNameChange · 16/07/2021 23:22

I'm scared of water, so definitely not diving (would probably need to be rescued from the board!). Swimming ok, so long as I can stay in the shallow end and put my feet down every few yards. Sailing, kayaking etc ok if I can wear a MASSIVE buoyancy aid!!!!!

Would love to do equestrian something or figure-skating. Marathon would be an excuse to get back into running, but I'll be the last over the line.

ohforarainyday · 16/07/2021 23:25

Definitely swimming. I swam competitively at school and had dreams of going to the Olympics. I can still cream most of the people at my local leisure centre (admittedly they're not usually aware that I am racing them). I swim a few times a week.

The other option would be equestrianism but that might be trickier since I haven't been on a horse in a few years.

ohforarainyday · 16/07/2021 23:27

Oh and nightmare would be anything that involves running or stairs. I don't run and I do NOT do stairs.

aiwblam · 16/07/2021 23:34

100m
I am quite powerful and the training would get me quicker. My last place at the Olympic would be quickly over and everyone would look at the winner so I’d go unnoticed.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 16/07/2021 23:40

I would do trampoline, swimming or show jumping. Never mind that it’s been 15 years since I got on a horse!

Worst: the cycling where they go round the velodrome. I’m convinced I wouldn’t go fast enough and the bike would just keel over.

I would really like to spend a year being trained by an Olympic coach with tailored diet etc. I’d lose loads of weight and it would be a lovely break from normal work.

x2boys · 16/07/2021 23:41

I have always fancied having a go at gymnastics or diving, I'm 47 and quite over weight, but I have a, year to get myself into shape🤣

lokomojo · 16/07/2021 23:43

Weight lifting or rowing. I fancy I could get into shape in a twelvemonth.

...

I have never rowed a boat in my life.

AdoptedBumpkin · 16/07/2021 23:45

Best: Middle distance running or maybe freestyle swimming.

Worst: Pole vaulting (would scare me), or weightlifting (would be rubbish).

MedicalTextbook · 16/07/2021 23:46

I’d go for long jump, one of the few things I could do at school.

No - anything in a team as don’t want to let others down. Also things that are directly comparing athletes like running - I’d lose badly at any sport. Not as humiliating when each long jumper is one after another compared to running - still being watched running round the track when the winner has collected the medal. (Bad memories from school).

I’ve just realised thinking on this thread that I’d be at Paralympics so if I had someone that really knew about cerebral palsy I might enjoy sport for the first time ever - I’d still lose, the Paralympic athletes a really good and I’m not.
