Do you know what I’m seeing everywhere at the moment and really turns my stomach?

Those revolting ‘grazing boards’, also ‘grazing boxes’.
Now I hate different types of food touching each other at the best of times but these things really make my stomach churn!
If you don’t know what they are, I’ll see if I can find a pic to attach.
Just an ugly mishmash of food which has no place being squished against something else, with everyone digging their fingers about it all to get the bits they want, are there plates involved or do people literally stand over these eating them?
I can’t be the only person who thinks these are vile! The waste must be ridiculous too.
The boxes remind me of kids packed lunch boxes, things all smooshed together crumbing up things with no crumbs Envy
Bleurgh.
What turns your stomach? Humour me, make me feel like less of a weirdo Grin

TBH im finding this post pretty goady. It smacks of snobbery and seems to suggest that if you dont buy good brie from Fortnums you dont care that your cheese is full of smarties and cat hair and you still think its the height of sophistication to have Chorizo.
I'm not getting that. At all.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 16/07/2021 20:14

I thought of men with moobs when I saw your title...
Only takes a hint of a sunny day and out they bloody come...

GreyhoundG1rl · 16/07/2021 20:14

@Ghosttile

To me they look like you’ve set up a marquee for an event but the caterer dropped the tower of plates and only one of the three buffet tables you ordered was delivered.
That's exactly it 😂
toolazytothinkofausername · 16/07/2021 20:17

I'm with you OP. I hate those boards.

Ghosttile · 16/07/2021 20:18

It doesn’t matter where your Brie is from if it’s squished up with 50 other things. It’s the trend not how much the food costs.

MaMelon · 16/07/2021 20:18

I see them advertised on our local Facebook group - they’re revolting looking things. If you look closely at the classy offerings here they have things like marshmallows next to ham next to cupcakes next to cheese, all put together god knows where and transported to the venue in a warm car 🤢

Just get yourself to Sainsbury’s, buy buffet food and stick it on the table.

EverythingDelegated · 16/07/2021 20:19

Totally agree, I am gobsmacked that this trend has taken off in a pandemic. No matter how prettily they are presented the whole idea grosses me out, even the ones just for two people, I don't want crackers nestled up against strawberries and olives with all the flavours mingling.

ImInStealthMode · 16/07/2021 20:19

@OrangeBlossomsinthesun To reassure you, as far as I know (bit of a specialist on Majorcan covid precautions) hotel buffets are all behind plastic safety screens and served for you by masked and gloved staff at the moment. That was certainly the case when I was there last summer anyway.

Anyway, back to the thread.

I live in Spain, although admittedly not in Majorca.

MrsWooster · 16/07/2021 20:23

I have never seen these things before and I yearn for my lost innocence.

Exactly. I'd much rather have one cheap bit of brie and a couple of crackers than a whole brie squashed up to some olives squashed up to rolled up chorizo next to malteasers next to strawberries.
HashtagAnonyMouse · 16/07/2021 20:27

And the fact every third person on social media has started up 'cstering' business from their kitchen Hmm

Henio · 16/07/2021 20:27

@MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat

They are just grim. Especially the ones with sweet and savoury mixed together. The ham is touching the party rings Envy. I keep seeing them advertised on fb marketplace where someone has made some sandwiches, bought some cheap cupcakes and just boxed them up all together with a load of other crap and flogs them for £15. Who is buying them?
Omg thats grim
Ghosttile · 16/07/2021 20:28

As for other things that turn my stomach, whenever I see anything about Love Island I think that the housekeeping staff must have to bin the towels and sheets. The fake tan, sun screen, make up, body oil and fluids are never going to wash out.

Watermelon221 · 16/07/2021 20:29

Yes I completely agree op.

Urgh everything touching everything else and nothing wrapped. Crisps would go soggy.

Lindy2 · 16/07/2021 20:29

I've seen some nicely presented grazing platters that look good. The ones on this thread though are just a grim mishmash of random stuff all squashed together.

I wouldn't buffet or platter with anyone outside my household right now anyway.

I did use to love the Chinese buffet restaurant though. Sigh. Bloody Covid.

Me neither. Even if I bought a slab of the cheapest cheddar from Lidl (as I often do) I wouldn't allow it to be mixed up with a load of other things like this. Food needs to be respected no matter how cheap.

Why do people need to graze anyway? What happened to snacking?

TheChosenTwo · 16/07/2021 20:33

I think it’s meant to look decadent and extravagant and just resembles the contents of an upturned skip Confused
Anyway, obviously people do like them, they’re just something I’m seeing a trend for (on Instagram mainly, not from anyone I’m following but on the explore page) and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen one that looks appealing.
Supermarkets are now doing boxes of sweet stuff all dumped in together too. I find it revolting but as I said in my op I don’t like food touching anyway, I have a real aversion to soft/damp food touching anything supposed to be dry anyway, I am clearly not the target audience Grin

Moonwhite · 16/07/2021 20:34

Ugh. Tomatoes leaning against chocolate just puts me off both things. They could at least harmonize and put compatible foods together.

Watermelon221 · 16/07/2021 20:37

@GreyhoundG1rl

It's just randoms shit dumped on a table Confused A neighbour of ours when I was a kid used to tell her children "We're having a buffet!!" when the cupboard was looking a bit bare. Said buffet consisted of every bit of food left in the house (one packet of crisps, the last two biscuits in a packet, two slices of ham, the end of a block of cheese, a wrinkly tomato, type stuff) unceremoniously dumped on the table and everyone told to "help yourselves". It was like feeding time at the fucking zoo. Got to hand it to you, Imelda, you were ahead of your time 😂
This made me lol 😂
dreamingbohemian · 16/07/2021 20:38

It's not snobbery! I don't care how much your food costs, it should not be all smashed together for people to rummage through.

Longdistance · 16/07/2021 20:38

Yanbu. Bloody awful. It looks like they’ve dumped it there, made zero effort and charged a fortune.
Lazy and expensive, looks shit. Utter crap.
‘Taxi for Longdistance!’ 👋

Ghosttile · 16/07/2021 20:39

If you look at google images there are some tables where it’s all different cheeses with sliced fresh and dried fruit, nuts and crackers. They look good and you probably won’t give anyone food poisoning from leaving it out for a few hours.

joystir59 · 16/07/2021 20:39

That grazing board looks stomach churning! Just awful to present food like that.

This is basically what you do in Germany, it's called abendbrot -- if you have leftovers and odds and ends, you put everything out and people help themselves.

You don't smash it all together though!
