My god Carrie is an arsehole, I’m at the episode where she’s berating Charlotte for not giving her $40000. Irresponsible and feckless

It hasn't aged well!

DamsonJammyBastard · 15/07/2021 23:22

Sometimes she's likeable, sometimes she's not. That's how she was written

SapphireCharm · 15/07/2021 23:25

I agree, she was very unreasonable and spoilt at times but as PP says, I think that's how her character was written.

This has been brought up soooo many times here and particularly the situation you mentioned- but you’re right. She’s a prick.

I hated when she went to Aiden’s country house and spent all her time screaming at squirrels going about their business while wearing a frilly apron. And when she invited Big there because he was a bit depressed and expected Aiden to be fine with him drinking a load of wine and moaning and kipping on the sofa.

Makes me laugh when she can’t amuse herself alone in Paris for one day without crying down the phone, getting annoyed no one can understand her pidgin America’s french, stepping in dog shit and looking forlorn in totally OTT outfits.

x2boys · 15/07/2021 23:26

Yes she's hard work, and very shallow,.

FelicityBeedle · 15/07/2021 23:27

Sorry this is the first time I’ve actually watched it, too young first time round! I honestly find her to be the only one with no redeeming quality

@EishetChayil l was about to say it hasn’t aged well!

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 15/07/2021 23:28

Definitely hasn't aged well....especially the very first series

Cyanchicken · 15/07/2021 23:28

Did you listen to the dolly alderton / Caroline podcast on it - great companion piece to rewatching SATC. You'll find it under sentimental in the city - they cover carries arseholery quite well. podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/sentimental-garbage/id1444729607?i=1000509615729

GCAcademic · 15/07/2021 23:31

Can I recommend the second movie, if you want to be truly horrified?

DamsonJammyBastard · 15/07/2021 23:31

To be fair any programme with sexual relationships as its core theme is going to date pretty quickly as society's norms and attitudes towards sex change markedly from decade to decade.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/07/2021 23:33

@FelicityBeedle it aired in 1998 so a lot of us will have been too young the first time round.

When I moved to South Korea at 22 it was literally the only thing in English on the tv, but they’d show random episodes every night. I eventually got round to watching all the seasons in order on sky a couple of years back. Definitely hasn’t aged well.

DamsonJammyBastard · 15/07/2021 23:34

I fee like Friends and SATC must be the two most analysed TV shows ever made.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 15/07/2021 23:35

I actually think they’re all better and a bit more normal in the first series, before it got really too ridiculous and theatrical. By the end of it all Carrie was totally implausible as a person. But she was always spoilt and irritating! I watched it first as a young twentysomething and really enjoyed the series, but seeing it again at the age the characters are meant to be I was horrified at how self-absorbed and immature they were!

Oh yeah, fantastic episode! Just fury at her actions. What’s a $400 pair of shoes worth now? $1000

I only recently watched the second movie.
Carrie is kind but the whole lot of them are shallow. But it's watchable and lighthearted.

Does anyone remember Allie McBeal. That just entered my head.

FelicityBeedle · 15/07/2021 23:41

I think it’s over analysed because it purports to be real (ish).

The line -
"When I first moved to New York and I was totally broke, sometimes I would buy Vogue instead of dinner. I felt it fed me more."

Oh fuck off.

It's weird how massive Ally McBeal was when it came out in the 90s and now it seems almost forgotten. All I can really remember is that she used to wear the most teeny weeny skirt and I think a giant baby used to appear to her?! Grin
Palavah · 15/07/2021 23:45

She was an annoying entitled arse the first time round.

The characters in the book it was based on weren't especially likeable, but for the TV show they were marketed as relatable.

Flamingo49 · 15/07/2021 23:45

I read a really interesting article with Lucy Prebble (who wrote I Hate Suzie etc), where she talked about how it's much less acceptable for female characters to have unlikeable qualities. It's so true, we don't analyse and critique male TV characters in the same way at all.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/07/2021 23:47

@Flamingo49 what about Ross from Friends? He gets brought up all the time for the controlling arse he was in the show!

stevalnamechanger · 15/07/2021 23:47

I love it . Total guilty pleasure watch seen the full run maybe 3 times over 😂😅

And yes find C insufferable a lot of the time

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 15/07/2021 23:48

She's the most heinous character in an otherwise brilliant and groundbreaking (at the time) TV series. Awful woman, who always re-directs conversations round to herself/her men. Like literally EVERY conversation. I refuse to believe that she was the glue that held the group together. In real life she'd get beaten up on a daily basis for being such a twat.

Now Miranda I love!!
