🎵 Every day I hear a different story
People sayin' that you’re no good for me
Saw your lover with another
And she’s making a fool of you, oh

🎵 If you love me baby, you'd deny it
But you laugh and tell me I should try it
Tell me I’m a baby, and I don't understand

Go Wham!

Distraction tactic? ................from the shitshow and HUGE security issue that was the Euros at Wembley. Just one reason.

MercyBooth · 19/07/2021 21:27

@Worldgonecrazy Yep Had that at school. Its the one where they gently puncture the inside of your arm with six small needles first.

And the we're so special we'll test everyday instead of isolating. Throw the young people enjoying themselves under the bus. Never mind Wimbledon or the races or Formula 1 or G7 hugs etc... they've managed to change the news cycle from their u-turn.

@Worldgonecrazy

I don’t know if anyone here is old enough to remember the TB / BCG vaccines that used to be given? Everyone would be checked for natural or acquired immunity a few weeks before and those who were found to have immunity did not need the jab.

For those unfamiliar with TB its case fatality rate is over 40% and it is nasty and contagious. Much worse than covid but as it’s a disease that now mostly happens to foreigners with different coloured skin, not so newsworthy.

So why for a lesser risk can we not give people the choice, particularly those young people amongst which we are told covid is being let rip? Surely a huge percentage will be immune and we could save the cost of vaccine and remove the risk of vaccine related injury? Why is that not being given as an option even though other countries accept natural immunity in lieu of vaccinations?

It just adds grist to the conspiracy theorists mill!

I was born in the London Borough of Brent, in the early 80s when it had a very high level of TB. I was therefore vaccinated as a baby and have a massive scar on my upper arm, no issues at all. I remember in year 5/6 primary school joining the queue with my classmates and the Dr who was performing the vaccinations saw my scar and said you don't need it, you're immune already (or words to that effect, I am remembering something from the early 90s!). It was so simple and easy, if only the covid things could be!!
RolloTomassi · 19/07/2021 22:04

@Worldgonecrazy god yes. Most painful jab ever! @smallandimperfectlyformed the Heaf test was the immunity test (never forgotten the name!) and mine was ambiguous. Got the jab and reacted quite badly, still have a rather ugly scar. Memories!

MercyBooth · 19/07/2021 22:10

@IRanSoFarAway1 If ive got this wrong please say but i think i saw you say on another thread that three jabs a year is taking the piss. I agree.

MercyBooth · 19/07/2021 22:27

DH went out into town today for a few bits. Came back with some Emmi Cafe Latte iced coffees. Later on i went to the fridge for one . Use by date was 6/7 Picked up another one 6/7 They are on the kitchen sink . I shall pour them down there later. Not bothered about the money. As long as no one gets bloody ill. Is this the pingdemic leaving places short staffed. Because if it is they need to do something about it...............before someone gets poisoned. Suppose DH could have checked the date but he was in his scooter and a bit hot and bothered.

justasking111 · 19/07/2021 22:29

My mother spent a year in isolation hospital with TB my heaf test showed that I had immunity so didn't need the jab. Like polio TB was to be feared she said.

Been researching the Vanderbilt family after reading a novel loosely based on them. The mortality rate of their children was awful. Rich or poor death stalked parents once upon a time

I read about Edward Gibbon, the historian who wrote The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.

He was born in 1737, the eldest of 7. His parents were so convinced that he wouldn't survive that they also called their next son Edward. In fact, he was the only one who did survive.

In good news, after nearly a year, the pool where the DCs have swimming lessons no longer looks like the aftermath of a major crime scene. Great to shower them there too as it's a right chore after getting home.
The 3?⁰C heat in the spectator area has done wonders for mask complience. I was wearing the minimum of socially acceptible sportswear and still struggled, and for that reason (plus all the other sensory inputs) it's been one of the places that I never attempted to cover my face as the risk of overwhelm is so high there.

I hope the pool programme is normal over the holidays...

Several parks are reopening paddling pools/ splash pads at the weekend too.

As for vaccine passports, I'm not shocked, disappointingly. There's just that underlying tone of we're not doing lockdown again but we'll find some loophole to get away without doing it while carrying on regardless

It just seems illogical that you can't do it before everyone's had the chance to be covered, and actually is it really worthwhile/ effective beyond that point?

I'm broadly supportive of vaccination and it is the most effective measure by far, but people should have it because they've balanced up the medical risks/ benefits, not being politically bullied.
I wonder how many young people are being socially alienated here. Education cocked up (yet still full student debt), social needs neglected for so long. A lot would just say "fuck off, we've lived without clubs this long".
And what comes next...?

I don't do many mass indoor events, but the barely a handful I do a year, I miss and they enhance my life a lot. After being denied so many pleasures for so long with little personal benefit, I haven't got the resistance to refuse out of principle.

As for events like nightclubs, it will just encourage illegal raves with all their disadvantages.

My DF and his siblings were born in the 1920s and 30s and 2/8 of them died as babies, including my aunt's twin. It was always presented to me as quite matter of fact, but must have been traumatic for all of them.

Worldgonecrazy · 20/07/2021 08:17

I’m stepping away from the crazy mask threads but would like a sensible comment to a query I have. According to JVT the most common places for spreading covid are hospitals, care homes and in close indoor settings (inter family transmission).

So why are those who are wearing masks “to protect others” not wearing them at all times at home when in the same room as family? Or are they? If HVT is right then I should be wearing a mask when in the same room as my mum. (That would not go down well!)

Supermarkets, the tube, and the high street are much lower risk of transmission.

Like all things covid, it doesn’t make sense.

Anyway, I hope everyone stays cool today. Remember to check on any vulnerable neighbours. This heat is a real killer and probably contributing more to the black alerts than covid, but that doesn’t suit the narrative. My best friend was a prisoner indoors during heatwaves due to a lung disease, sadly she died a few years back.

Anyway, the CTs say climate change is going to be the reason behind the next global lockdown. When I think how extreme the weather is becoming I find it quite scary.

I’m also immune. A vaccination specialist I spoke to some years ago said that this was because at some point, probably as a baby, I had been exposed to TB but was asymptomatic. I had thought it was hereditary as my great grandmother recovered from TB but was wrong. My mother was horrified that her baby daughter had been exposed to such a terrible disease and she hadn’t noticed!
110APiccadilly · 20/07/2021 08:26

I was checked for natural immunity before being given MMR (I wasn't given it as a child and had it as an adult so the process of getting it was different to normal).

Wow Singapore has turned around covid wise they're going to treat it like flu. Such a pragmatic article
