What do you call a mat that you stand ornaments on?

I want to buy a fancy mat/cover for standing a vase of flowers on, but don't know the best search term to use. Do they have a proper name?

A doily?

CeaselessWatcher · 14/07/2021 09:45

I came here to say doily, did a search to check that was the right word and discovered that doilies were named after an actual Mr Doiley (or Mrs I suppose but I assume a 17c tailor would be a man). Interesting!

That really is interesting Smile

I had no idea.

Hmm, I might stand cakes in a doily (or at least my mum did in the 1970's) but less sure about an ornament. I'll try searching for it though.

Searching for 'mat' brings up door mats and 'cover' brings up bedding. Grin

It's a glass vase on a glass shelf so needs something in-between. Hoping to find something in a silvery colour.

Those would be paper doilies, I think.

I crocheted many a doily to act as a vase/ornament coaster in my time.

Maybe try searching for a glass/crystal/silver coaster?

Try plant mat, plant coaster, plant stand for a variety of options.

doily.

Paper doilies are for food, cloth ones for ornaments etc.

Mum had those-like fancy lace.

Thanks - that's the sort of thing, yes, though those ones aren't to my taste. I noticed that they call them tablecloths - so I will try searching on that too.

An Ornamat surely? (Dragons Den??)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/07/2021 12:08

What about using a place mat? You can get silver coloured ones

Good idea. Worth a check (so long as I don't have to buy them in packs of 6!)

Unnecessary?

FrogFairy · 14/07/2021 12:27

You could look at candle plates or trivets/pot holder mats.
