Is it just me, or is everything just massively shitty right now?

I'm so confused - we are days away from unlocking day, yet everyone either has covid or is shit scared of getting covid. Schools are closing and parents are terrified of being pinged to self isolate. Our horrible government has cut the foreign aid budget and cancelled the England football teams reception at 10 downing Street. There is a real feeling that people are going to take masks off and actively endanger people in public spaces. English hooliganism has raised its ugly head in front of the whole world. Awful racist knuckledraggers have been mouthing off on twitter. POC are afraid for their safety.

It all feels so...broken and hopeless.

I’m with you on this. I’ve carried on and on since this all began (like a lot of people) but I can see everything starting to get to me now.

TeardropsFallingOnHotSand · 13/07/2021 20:25

If you look across the wider world then the UK is not so bad. But when you realise we live on a sphere it all sinks in.

TeardropsFallingOnHotSand · 13/07/2021 20:27

Oh, I'm not talking about Covid. Climate change frightens me more than anything. It will change our lives in ways we cannot imagine now even after the last 18 months.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 13/07/2021 20:36

Yes I forgot to add climate change to my list - apparently in California yesterday, it was so hot there was a fire tornado.

It's really depressing. The only thing cheering me up at the moment is the prospect of some sunny hot weather at last.

TeardropsFallingOnHotSand · 13/07/2021 20:54

@Indigopearl

Yes, but just don't put the air con on.....

TreaslakeandBack · 13/07/2021 20:55

I’m on holiday in sunny Devon and don’t feel this at all. It’s really busy and everyone seems happy.
Still wearing a mask inside public spaces but otherwise normal.

MrsFin · 13/07/2021 21:03

I don't know anyone who has Covid, nor anyone who has had Covid.

Cosybelles · 13/07/2021 21:06

It's not just you. It feels like such a low point right now.

Thortful · 13/07/2021 21:07

That's impressive MrsFin
I know several who had it in January, and a few who currently have it.
None in the first lockdown though.

FreeBritnee · 13/07/2021 21:10

I honestly believe social media has completely polarised everyone. Problems that existed are magnified ten fold. Add covid and it’s a hot mess.

FaintlyMacabre · 13/07/2021 21:11

Definitely feeling that at the moment. Really upset about our horrible government and horrible racists. All my family but me have Covid and we’ve not been out for nearly two weeks.
We’ve got a holiday booked straight after school breaks up and really looking forward to it- just crossing everything that I don’t get Covid before then or it’s all off.

Labradabradorable · 13/07/2021 21:12

I agree and I’m normally a pretty sunny person.

COVID feels like a background app draining everyone’s battery. I just want it to go away.
Priti Patel is Home Secretary.
Racist abuse of the England players is heartbreaking.
My mum now needs more radiotherapy treatment.
We have a dear friend in eSwatini (Swaziland) who is scared about the political violence there.
Unrest in RSA is frightening for family there.
Limping to the end of term with bubbles perilously burstable

It’s been a rubbish week on top of a rubbish few months. Can’t wait to escape to Norfolk, where I’ll switch off my phenomenal for the week.

ssd · 13/07/2021 21:13

Yes @AngelicaElizaAndPeggy
I agree,everything is shit,Totally

Labradabradorable · 13/07/2021 21:13

FreeBritnee I completely agree. I’m trying a week off from it next week. Just books, maybe the radio.

Thortful · 13/07/2021 21:14

Please don't switch off you phenomenal, @Labradabradorable. It's what make you, you Star

pilingup · 13/07/2021 21:17

Yep, all shit at the moment. So many people have covid round here right now, I feel like we are just dodging it and it'll be at our door any minute.

On top of that my dm already has terminal cancer and my DF is undergoing tests for suspected cancer!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/07/2021 21:18

I'm not getting excited about "freedom day".

I was totally perplexed by the crowds at the Euros and Wimbledon while primary schools were limiting or banjing parents at sports days.

My teenager is not allowed to go to school this week due to a positive covid case in a 17 year old he is sometimes in the same class with.

I hope that sensible people will refrain from travelling and keep their masks on. We still need to protect the NHS so that they can get on with treating all the people with life threatening or chronic illnesses who have been pushed miles down the queue due to Covid.

My dh is working at the Olympic Games where NO spectators are allowed, Japanese nationals or not.

It doesn't feel to me like a time to be celebrating (although am enormously grateful for the vaccine etc).

krystalweedon · 13/07/2021 21:21

COVID feels like a background app draining everyone’s battery

That is such an excellent description.

I'm in Wales so no big Freedonm Day here yet.I veer between feeling positive and feeling just completely ground down by everything.

krystalweedon · 13/07/2021 21:22

Freedom nor freedonm!

Spudina · 13/07/2021 21:22

A fire tornado!!! Holy crap. That’s apocalyptic stuff. It’s not just you OP. I’m feeling pretty flat. Losing the footie and the predictable racism that followed has tipped me over. I’m failing at work and at home. Not enough time to do either well. Covid is bloody everywhere. I’ve nursed in a mask for a bloody year with no end in sight. Brexit means we have to keep open borders like India for trade when they blatantly should have closed. arrrggghhhh.
I’m going to plant a tree (pay money for someone else to plant one abroad) Which is what I do when I struggle. I hope it doesn’t get burnt by a fire tornado.....

bellamountain · 13/07/2021 21:30

@FreeBritnee

Social media has a lot to answer for. There is no free speech when racist comments are continually allowed. Why aren't they held accountable?? It's inexcusable. These huge companies are allowing it.

The response to Covid would have been very different if it happened in the 90s.

Too many people with opinions when in the old days they'd just be chatting to their neighbours. Their shit would go no further.

duckme · 13/07/2021 21:31

@TeardropsFallingOnHotSand

This. 100% I'm genuinely scared of the impact the last 18 months will have had on the environment. The extreme weather patterns around the world recently have been especially concerning.
Dogoodfeelgood · 13/07/2021 21:32

I’m not feeling this way at all! Something that has really boosted my mood lately is reading “Human Kind” by Rutger Bregman. Don’t let things like some racists get you down, look around and read the thousands of comments and posits in support of the team, I saw more posts and comments denouncing racism than I saw actual racism (didn’t actually see any racism at all but I’m assuming they were deleted before I looked). It’s summer, we are all alive. Obviously the aid budget is pretty shitty but that’s politics and it’s up to us to fight for better. Look for the positives and read and take in information that isn’t the depressing news cycle.

OverByYer · 13/07/2021 21:37

I feel really flat too. I managed to get through Winter by looking forward to Summer and things getting better, and now Summer is here and everything is still shit.
I’ve got a big birthday coming up and I honestly can’t be bothered to organise anything to celebrate it.
