Anyone taken diazepam?

BajanB · 11/07/2021 12:10

I was given 3 days of 2mg diazepam for muscle spasms for a disc problem. Its really helped apart from making me ridiculously sleepy. I took the last one last night and today I have the runs and feel very slightly nauseous. Not badly but it’s not something I usually get unless I’ve got norovirus. I’m also taking naproxen and something to line the stomach (I’ve had both these before with no problem) Has anyone else had stomach problems from diazepam or is it likely to be coincidence.

I take it on and off for a condition and I've never noticed this? I don't know anyone else who has either. Possibly just a coincidence? Or perhaps the naproxen has caused it this time?

ForeverSinging · 11/07/2021 13:03

My mum has taken it for years. She's had no problems and she's one of those people who usually has every side effect going. It could be a coincidence.

TheQueef · 11/07/2021 13:04

I've had it several times and not noticed.
Were you taking any codeine before?

Naproxen is the likely culprit more than diazepem.

Timeforabiscuit · 11/07/2021 13:12

I took high dose diazepan for back spasm, didn't suffer any tummy problems, but it's only recommended for relatively short period anyway. But if you are having toileting issues, I think its one of the symptoms doctors look out for as well any numbness/tingling - so worth flagging with whoever you can get hold of these days!

Mrsmadevans · 11/07/2021 13:13

I take it now and again for muscle spasms too like you , never had this , neither have my Dh,Dd2 or My Mum .

PearlclutchersInc · 11/07/2021 13:15

No idea about diazepam, but Naproxen is evil stuff. It knocked me for six and even the day after I felt a bit woozy/hungover. Should you be mixing the two? (sorry, really don't know).

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/07/2021 13:16

Very true, please seek advice asap as loss of control can indicate a serious problem, especially with disc problems.

OhRene · 11/07/2021 13:20

It'll be the naproxen. I've had diazepam, naproxen and codeine when my back went out and I had an upset tummy with them.

Allthegranola · 11/07/2021 13:22

It's more likely to be the naproxen.

BillyIsMyBunny · 11/07/2021 13:29

I’ve taken diazepam fairly regularly and at a larger dose and never noticed any stomach problems with it.

popandsqueak · 11/07/2021 13:45

I hurt my neck last week and I was in agony. Dr initially gave me naproxen and told me to take co codamol. Went back as pain not improved and given 5mg diazepam to take at night. Since started taking them I feel woozy all the time, but it's making a real difference to the pain. Can only assume must be the naproxen and diazepam

Gilead · 11/07/2021 13:59

Agree with others, it’ll be the naproxen. Omeprazole and Lansoprazole are good but not always as effective as they could be.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 11/07/2021 14:53

Naproxen is brutal for the stomach.

It won't be the diazepam

Bagelsandbrie · 11/07/2021 15:21

More likely to be the Naproxen.

BajanB · 11/07/2021 21:07

Thanks everyone. Ive had naproxen and co codamol before together but never had diazepam.. it really helped but my stomach feels a bit turbulent

You can take NSAIDS for years and be fine, then have a reaction dependent on how your gut is at a particular time.

BajanB · 12/07/2021 00:36

Thanks Gilead. I’m waiting for a pain clinic first appointment and for a steroid injection. I’m in so much pain and it’s only the diazepam that have helped so far, I don’t want it to be messing my stomach up as I’m im enough misery as it is,

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/07/2021 00:38

It'll be the naproxen, but I can't touch diazepam. Was given it a couple of years ago and it made me trip horribly (I used to use magic mushrooms and LSD back in the 90s and this was definitely a trip). Didn't make me sleepy at all.

BajanB · 12/07/2021 18:52

My stomach is still feeling bad on just the naproxen and cocodamol so as I’ve not had any diazepam since sat it must be the naproxen. Which isn’t a disaster as it doesn’t touch the pain anyhow. Gilead I think you are right that you can react differently to the same drug at different times. My stomach is crampy and gassy and I feel like I could need the loo at any time. I took it for a month a while back and was ok with it 🤷🏿‍♀️

Gilead · 12/07/2021 19:14

@BajanB, sounds like typical NSAID reaction, sorry.

BajanB · 13/07/2021 00:44

Gilead thanks. It’s not helping my back enough to put up with the stomach problems so I’m not going to carry on taking the naproxen,

@BajanB

Gilead thanks. It’s not helping my back enough to put up with the stomach problems so I’m not going to carry on taking the naproxen,
I would recommend you speak to your GP about your stomach problems. Naproxen has been prescribed to you for a reason, and it is often more beneficial to take certain medications in combination, rather than on their own. You could be having a completely unrelated bout of diarrhea, or it could be the naproxen. Either way, your GP may be able to prescribe something to help. I wouldn't stop one of your medications without talking it over with your GP first.
MarthaJonesPhone · 13/07/2021 00:51

It's the anti inflammatory. I take diazepam when my trapped nerve in my back flares up.

I can't physically bear more than a day on anti inflammatories before I get terrible stomach pains.

steppingcarefully · 13/07/2021 07:30

I am currently in the same situation as you with regards to disc problems. I have a herniated disc which has caused sciatica and had terribly painful muscle spasms in my leg. I had a steroid epidural a week ago and thank goodness the pain has improved massively. I have been on diazepam for a few weeks along with morphine. I am now completely off diazepam and weaning myself off morphine which has given me some horrible stomach troubles. I had Naproxen for a while but didn't think it was actually making much difference so was prescribed Arcoxia, this is another anti-inflammatory that is more gentle on the stomach. Maybe you could ask your GP for that instead. I suspect as others have said it is more likely to be the Naproxen upsetting your stomach. Is it Omeprazole that you are taking alongside it? What dosage? When on Naproxen I take 20mg twice daily.
