Hi everyone
Please can you help me decide on baby name Otis?? I keep going on and off it but my 3.5 year old is adomant his name should be Otis! Also thinking about Tommy. I’m 37 weeks pregnant.
What’s your thoughts?

Otis is a great name - i like it much more than Tom/Thomas.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/07/2021 15:42

@GreyhoundG1rl

Guess I'm alone in thinking it's terrible...
No you’re not. A friend’s dd named her baby Otis. All I could think was, God, if that was my dd, I don’t know how on earth I’d be able to pretend I liked it. Or at least that I didn’t hate it.
mamaduckbone · 10/07/2021 15:43

I really like it

I know 4 people with dogs called Otis

They are lovely dogs

Emma2021 · 10/07/2021 16:00

To me, 'Otis' is a lift company. I believe they were the first people to build a lift. I worked for a lift co, hence my brain pointing that way up.

Tommy is not for me. However, your child you have the ultimate say.
A word of caution, consider any new name and what it can be associated with and possibly mispronounced as children can be v nasty at times.

Bottom line, whatever name you decide to go for, I'm sure it will be lovely :)

Greysofa · 10/07/2021 16:37

Prefer Otis to Tommy. My friends son is called Tommy, both parents were adamant it would be Tommy and not Thomas or Tom. A few years later and he’s normally referred to as Tom or TomTom!

ahoyshipmates · 10/07/2021 16:46

All it makes me think of is either Otis Lifts or Otis Redding.

MinnieMountain · 10/07/2021 17:47

It’s a good name.

Does it pass the shout-it-across-the-park test for you?

I don’t like children being named diminutives of full names. Give them a choice ffs.

IsThePopeCatholic · 10/07/2021 17:48

Great name.

DramaAlpaca · 10/07/2021 17:50

It's not my style, tbh but it's better than Tommy.

Please remember your child doesn't have a say in the name you choose, that's up to you and your partner.

christdoinghisunspecifiedhobby · 10/07/2021 17:51

I like it but I'm a big Otis Redding fan.

Have only met one in real life, a very cool kid and it really suited him.

Cocolapew · 10/07/2021 17:53

It was on my list because of Otis Redding, it's a great name.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/07/2021 17:55

Makes me think of Otis ear drops.

Blastandbollocks · 10/07/2021 17:56

I like Otis for the same reasons as @Cocolapew But I do think of aardvarks... and also lifts because quite a few are manufactured by OTIS.

Mydogisagentleman · 10/07/2021 18:20

Not for me. I think of lifts or Otex or otitis

MissCherryCakeyBun · 10/07/2021 18:35

I agree on Otis lifts.

GillBiggeloesHair · 10/07/2021 18:43

Otis Redding = legend.
Love it.

MrsJBaptiste · 10/07/2021 18:48

Absolutely love it - I often wish we'd called my son Otis...

MrsJBaptiste · 10/07/2021 18:49

I'm from Yorkshire too!

Terrazzo · 10/07/2021 18:50

😃 it’s on our list and many many other people’s. Getting very popular! I know a few little ones in our local area. So I think it would be well received overall!

Terrazzo · 10/07/2021 18:51

Otis lifts - we have family members Evan (Evans is on every other company sign it seems!) and Avery (labels) - both have literally never been commented on to anyone’s face.

WhereDidIGoNext · 10/07/2021 19:22

Otis is nice. I really don’t like Tommy though, Thomas is fine but Tommy is a nickname and an adult won’t necessarily want to be called that.
Plus, sorry but I think of Tommy Robinson

Georgieporgie29 · 10/07/2021 19:29

I love the name Otis and think it goes well with the middle and last name

CatsArePeople · 10/07/2021 21:21

Nice. Tommy is also nice

DinosApple · 10/07/2021 21:48

I really like it OP.

3.5 year olds can have strong opinions. My big brother was adamant that I would be Bunsford if I was a boy. Fortunately I wasn't Grin.
