If you don’t live in the country you are “from”. Who do you support in sport?

By from I mean, if someone said “where are you from” the country you would say so not necessarily your nationality!

I’m English and moved to Denmark last year...footballs not my thing (but I am loving how buzzing Copenhagen is today!) so I’m not hugely fussed but would say I’m supporting England (but also happy for dk to win Grin but wondering how long I’d have to live here before switching alliance Grin

I live in the US. I still support England/GB first with football and the Olympics.

I support the US women's soccer team but refuse to support the men's because it's totally ridiculous that their crappy team gets paid more. I find the US really boring in the Olympics just because they get so many medals, so if I'm not supporting GB I'm supporting the underdog.

NotInGuatemalaNowDrRopata · 08/07/2021 02:58

Rugby - NZ (born there, lived there until age 24)
Football - England (lived there for 20 years)

Currently living in USA. Wouldn't support them to win anything.

FloconDeNeige · 08/07/2021 03:27

England (although not a fan of some of their twattish fans). Then Switzerland, where I live.

DH is French but the only time I’d ever support France is if they were playing against Scotland.

newnortherner111 · 08/07/2021 06:31

Wales where they participate as a nation and not part of a GB or UK team.

SalsaLove · 08/07/2021 06:37

Wales for rugby, even if they’re playing my home country.

Camomila · 08/07/2021 07:28

I've lived in the UK since I was 5 and I still support Italy at football, can't wait for Sunday night. DH and DS1 are going to be the lone England supporters at my parents house.

Frazzled2207 · 08/07/2021 07:36

I’m Welsh (born and brought up there) but lived in England half my life. Always support Wales first but England second- my husband and children are English after all.
Most welsh people I know will never support England and will be cheering for Italy on Sunday.

sandgrown · 08/07/2021 07:42

My grandchildren are English/Italian living in the UK but generally support England then Italy when England go out . Sunday is an unusual situation for them!

Sometimesonly · 08/07/2021 07:50

Like @geamhradh I am English but have lived in Italy for over 20 years. I used to always support England but, tbh I don't really feel as British nowadays (partly thanks to Brexit and being told I'm not a "proper" British citizen). Everyone in my family will be supporting Italy on Sunday and if they win DH wants us to take the kids to the piazza to celebrate after the match so I sort of want Italy to win. Blush Sorry.

Sometimesonly · 08/07/2021 07:52

In Eurovision I support whichever of the two countries has the better song which is always Italy.

See, I tend to go all out Scandi for Eurovision. It's the bellowing men with long hair standing with their legs apart and the wind machine. Though obviously, Damiano wouldn't be kicked out of bed for eating crisps.
Aggy35 · 08/07/2021 09:17

I'm European but have lived in England for 16 years now.Im more of a 'support the hand tha feed you ' type of a person.I appreciate my roots but I also appreciate the country that sustains me and my family.

user1471523870 · 08/07/2021 09:29

I am Italian and been living in England for more than half my life. I have double citizenship and my choice of living here is driven by the love of this country (meaning, I genuinely like the culture and the people).
The final been Italy-English is my worst nightmare to be honest!!!!
I have been supporting both teams so far...but now?

I think it will be more of a lose-lose situation for me. If Italy will win I will be devastated for England and the other way round :(

mbosnz · 08/07/2021 10:08

@NotInGuatemalaNowDrRopata LOVE the username, lol.

NZ, first and forever.
Then;
Wales
Ireland

South Africa and Australia against any Northern Hemisphere countries

Currently loving seeing England do well in the football. People need something a little bit more cheerful, at the minute!

Sometimesonly · 08/07/2021 13:28

Well, if we're talking Eurovision crushes, it has to be Francesco Gabbani!

Noooooo. Rasmussen. Danish Viking pirates. With wind machines! Hold me down.
igelkott2021 · 08/07/2021 15:07

I am English (and some Irish) and support England and then Ireland and then the other home nations (although not keen on Wales while Gareth Bale is around; also not keen on Portugal while Ronaldo is around and so convinced of his awesomeness).

After that, the Netherlands.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/07/2021 15:10

I'm NZ for rugby, same! I never fell out of love with Jonah Lomu.
TiredButDancing · 08/07/2021 15:17

Depends on the sport but broadly I support South Africa first, then England. Which his weird because I don't feel south african any more as such. But I definitely don't feel English, so I guess that's why?

But for some sports - eg if I'm watching the Olympics, I don't really have any emotional connection to any of those athletes so broadly tend to support GB vs SA. But it's a bit erratic.

Isitpossi · 08/07/2021 15:18

The winner Grin

lurker101 · 08/07/2021 15:21

Very much depends on the sport for me - if NI are playing I’ll support them until they’re out, otherwise:
Football: England (and other home nations to a lesser degree)
Rugby: Ireland
Cricket: India
Hockey: Ireland
Olympics: Team GB

MrsLCSofLichfield · 08/07/2021 17:13

Scottish. Lived in England for 27 years. Don't like international football, prefer SPFL and lower league, but happy to support England. Can't be doing with all the ABE/Tartan Army twattery.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/07/2021 18:14

Can't be doing with all the ABE/Tartan Army twattery.

What's wrong with the Tartan Army? They've won numerous awards for their good behaviour, and raise money for charities in every country they play against, not to mention cleaning up Leicester Square!

TBF the current England team are taking a knee and feeding school kids whose parents can't. The supporters might be dickheads but the team don't seem to be.

Oh I agree with that. Gareth Southgate and his team do deserve to be in the final and have played very well even if they couldn't beat us.

mbosnz · 08/07/2021 18:15

MrsTerryPratchett - I feel that way about Richie McCaw. And he really is as genuinely gorgeous and nice in real life. . . (swoons).

gingercat02 · 08/07/2021 18:41

I'm from Northern Ireland so sport is slightly contentious anyway but I support NI/Ireland in football and rugby and Ireland/GB in other sports like athletics but having lived in England for 30 years I don't support them in any thing
