If you don’t live in the country you are “from”. Who do you support in sport?

By from I mean, if someone said “where are you from” the country you would say so not necessarily your nationality!

I’m English and moved to Denmark last year...footballs not my thing (but I am loving how buzzing Copenhagen is today!) so I’m not hugely fussed but would say I’m supporting England (but also happy for dk to win Grin but wondering how long I’d have to live here before switching alliance Grin

I haven't lived in the country I was born in for 51 years. But that's where I'm from. That's who I support. If they go out I support the best looking team.

Eve · 07/07/2021 22:09

DS - depends on the sport, both in UK but 2 European parents , they support different country teams in football & rugby.

Neondisco · 07/07/2021 22:10

I'm from England and live there. I don't support England. Why assume people support their country of origin?

hazelnutlatte · 07/07/2021 22:26

My cousin is Danish but had lived in the UK for most of her life- she is supporting Denmark today! But would support England of playing anyone but Demark

JaninaDuszejko · 07/07/2021 22:34

I'm Scottish but have lived in England over half my life (moved here for work in my twenties). Still support ABE (Anyone but England) in the mens football. Hate the toxic masculinity associated with the English Men's football fans. I will support the English womens football team.

elp30 · 07/07/2021 22:36

I'm American but I'm married to an Englishman so in the European championships in football, I'll support England.

If it's CONCACAF, I'll support Mexico because my parents are Mexican.

If it's the Olympics, I'll always support my country, USA.

reluctantbrit · 07/07/2021 23:19

German here: I do support anyone playing against the English and that includes Wales and Scotland.

To be honest, I don't care a lot about Sports. DH always printed off the opponent flag when Rugby was on to annoy his Rugby-mad colleague.

@PandoraP

Have a look at Russian football "supporters".

DisgruntledPelican · 07/07/2021 23:28

I live in a different country to where I was born/grew up, and support neither (or any, really) - I don’t feel that pull to any team!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/07/2021 23:31

I'm Hungarian

it depends on which teams are playing.
obv England first, but we have lots of family and friends all over the place so during the Euros we've been rooting for Belgium, Italy, Austria, Holland, Spain, Denmark...etc

so happy England is in the final. I really think they will win.

Dh emigrated to England from his home country 33 years ago. If his home country is involved he would always support them. Otherwise it would be England. Usually.

DramaAlpaca · 07/07/2021 23:37

I've lived outside England, where I was born, for over 20 years but I still support England.

I live in Ireland, DH's home country. Our DC, despite having all been born in England, always support Ireland and wouldn't ever embrace their English side.

Winnithegreat · 07/07/2021 23:38

Living in England for over 15 years - but will always first support my home country, second England/team GB in any sporting event. 2 dcs with dual nationality: 1 supports England, the other my home country (but probably just to wind sibling up).
Don’t think my alliance will ever change Smile

KopparbergCazza · 07/07/2021 23:41

I'm Scottish. Currently live in Wales and have done for the last decade. Lived in England 20 years before that. DH is English. Kids are technically English. Both born in English hospital which is the closest one to where we live. They've lived their entire lives in Wales. Both 'identify as' Welsh.

I support Scotland. Then Wales. Then every country in the entire world.

It will be a very cold day in hell before I ever support England. DH is the same about Scotland and Wales. Kids support Wales.

gemloving · 07/07/2021 23:41

I'm German but was naturalised and have lived here 30% of my life. England played Germany, so supported Germany. Now 100% England. Any other sport, Germany always first, England always Second.

It's coming home FootballFootballFootball

Geamhradh · 07/07/2021 23:45

I'm from Britain, I live in Italy (awkward!)
I support England first and foremost
Unlike many, I'd support any of the home nations against anybody else
I support Italy against anyone except England
I support Spain against anyone except England and Italy (but was v torn last night)
I support anyone against Brasil
Except France. Then I support Brasil.

MarshaBradyo · 07/07/2021 23:46

U.K. / Aus

Probably England first as have been here so long now

Womencanlift · 07/07/2021 23:47

Any other sport outside of football:
Scotland
Wales
Ireland
England
Everyone else

Men’s Football:
Scotland
Wales
Ireland
Anyone else except England
NEVER England…

PineappleMojito · 08/07/2021 00:01

Living in England for 18 years and a British citizen now but would never support them in football. It’s such a shame so many of the English fans use football as an excuse for racism and xenophobia.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 08/07/2021 00:02

England usually because, largely, my home country doesn’t really excel or even compete in the same ‘big’ sports that England do (with the exception of rugby and some golfers….). But I also happily support any of the ‘home’ UK nations in any sport, always enjoy seeing them do well.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 08/07/2021 00:06

Indeed. Or in fact certain other European national teams in particular, or many, many club teams the world over. Make even Millwall fans look like mere naughty schoolboys (or schoolgirls).

fizzandchips · 08/07/2021 00:26

I’ve now lived in England almost half my life, from a country which would traditionally support ‘anyone but England’. Growing up English footballers and their fans weren’t people I would choose to support. This English team is different. Gareth Southgate is a fantastic manager; humble and not arrogant. The players seem to be following his example. I have surprised myself how much I want this team to do well and I’m thrilled they’ve made it through to the final…as for allowing so many fans and supporters to gather in such large numbers when funerals and weddings haven’t been allowed…well that’s another thread.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/07/2021 01:20

Theres just not the same level of toxic masculinity

TBF the current England team are taking a knee and feeding school kids whose parents can't. The supporters might be dickheads but the team don't seem to be.

Usernameisgone · 08/07/2021 01:24

I live in Spain, but support England! Really it would depend on who was playing 🤣

greenlynx · 08/07/2021 01:33

I support England, I live here over 15 years. My home country is not at the same level in football so it’s not an issue.
