If you don’t live in the country you are “from”. Who do you support in sport?

By from I mean, if someone said “where are you from” the country you would say so not necessarily your nationality!

I’m English and moved to Denmark last year...footballs not my thing (but I am loving how buzzing Copenhagen is today!) so I’m not hugely fussed but would say I’m supporting England (but also happy for dk to win Grin but wondering how long I’d have to live here before switching alliance Grin

My DM has been in the UK for >50 years. It's Denmark all the way here! much to DH's annoyance

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/07/2021 21:00

If I lived abroad I’d still be an England supporter through and through. I guess I’d throw my support behind my adopted country if England weren’t featuring.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/07/2021 21:01

Parent are a mix of nationalities, I have lived in three other countries, dual national, DD and DH is from the last and one of parents' countries.

In order I support:
Any underdog
Scotland
England
Italy
Canada

And I can change based on pluckiness!

Ravenspeckingontheroof · 07/07/2021 21:03

DM still supports her home country after 38 years. She supports almost anyone over England. I support England, moved here from another country when I was 8.

AliceSprings123 · 07/07/2021 21:04

Just like sports and honestly not partisan...politics tho...another matter!

kowari · 07/07/2021 21:07

I don't support anyone, as in wear specific clothing or shout at the television. I am a duel national and am pleased when either country is doing well in a sport but not overly invested in any of it.

AnnaMagnani · 07/07/2021 21:07

In order of preference DM will support:

Denmark
The person/team she thinks are best looking
England

Probably not much different for me Blush

GrouchyKiwi · 07/07/2021 21:09

I support NZ first, Scotland second, Netherlands third, GB 4th, and then whoever I like best.

PandoraP · 07/07/2021 21:14

Anyone but EnglandWink I’d support North Korea over England as I remember how the English football fans smashed up my home city when we beat them many years ago. No other country has the same number of drunk violent fans as England. I associate English football with beer bellies and tattoos.

DaisyWaldron · 07/07/2021 21:15

I moved here 30 years ago from Ireland, and Ireland still has my loyalty. I have close family from France, Italy, and Spain, and DH and our children are English, so I support any of those teams in a vague way depending mostly on who I'm with, but I'm more French than English, so I generally support them second.

DaisyWaldron · 07/07/2021 21:17

But I will always support Wales or Scotland over England. If we are talking about counties, though, I'm Yorkshire through and through.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/07/2021 21:19

English, lived in Scotland for 20 years.
Couldn't give a shit as football is so boring.

The on sport I follow, I support a Finnish guy!

Yolanda524 · 07/07/2021 21:22

I support my home country (where I was born and grew up) Ive lived in England for 10+ years now but can’t refer it to home and I don’t see myself ever supporting England. In fact all this makes me even more homesick as I never get to have that feeling of everyone supporting a celebrating the team I support anymore. My kids while have dual nationality don’t care about my home country so it’s just me watching my country play any sport and it’s lonely. I’m Upstairs watching something else on tv while they are all downstairs watching their football. While I don’t like my kids being upset I still actually hope England lose so it’s all over with.

newstart1234 · 07/07/2021 21:22

Depends on the game. Tonight I’m genuinely torn. Denmark vs England. I live in Denmark and have for a while and I love it. Don’t know I have a soft spot for Denmark and hope they win but I think it’s sad that England have never won. I want England to win for the players who seem sweet and Denmark for the sheer mindless loyalty of it. I’m British and I don’t really think myself as English so maybe that makes a difference.

SimonJT · 07/07/2021 21:27

Rugby England

Other sports I just support whoever I have put a bet on/been allocated in a sweepstake at work.

My husband very much supports Sweden.

MajorNeville · 07/07/2021 21:28

I'm British first, English with a Scottish dad. I lived abroad for the best part of 10 years, it's England all the way.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 07/07/2021 21:31

I'm a brit in denmark with dual nationality. Normally dont watch football because its boring but will not be able to join in any conversation if I dont so...

I want denmark to win. Theres just not the same level of toxic masculinity. Already heard England fans booing Dk because Dk blocked an attempt. So for playing the damn game.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 07/07/2021 21:33

Actually if its cricket or rugby then England. If its handball then Denmark. Other than that not really bothered.

PersephoneJames · 07/07/2021 21:33

Both!

Corcra · 07/07/2021 21:34

A large number of my friends (we’re Irish) live in other countries (longer than they lived in Ireland) but still support Ireland if they’re playing but support the country they live in if Ireland are not playing.
My French friend (Irish husband & kids) who’s living in Ireland (longer than she’s lived in France) always supports France, I shout for them with her when I’m there.

sashagabadon · 07/07/2021 21:40

England
Northern Ireland
Ireland
Scotland
Wales
In that order

After that I have a soft spot for Portugal and Spain.
Normally fairly pleased when Germany or France lose

Nachorancho · 07/07/2021 21:41

Been in UK 8 years - would love to support home nations but "Enger-land" attitude puts me off. Will go for Scotland, Wales or Ireland (not northern) over England. If they are against my country of birth then no contest

SmokedPaprikaHotChilliPowder · 07/07/2021 21:42

I wasn't born in England, but have lived here most of my life. I think that even if I moved back to the country I was born in, I'd still support England (not that I actually careGrin) and not just because my birth country are shit Wink

Username7521 · 07/07/2021 21:44

My home country. It’s never entered my mind to support anyone else if they are playing.

MyCreateIsUsernamed · 07/07/2021 21:46

Yeah I support who's doing best. I can choose between several.
