That poor poor girl. So much pressure for her at her age and then for her journey to end like that! Absolutely gut wrenching, I hope she's OK.

Do you think it was anxiety or tummy upset? It was such a shame she had alot of pressure won her.

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 05/07/2021 21:30

I thought she looked unwell when she came out. Under her eyes was very dark. Poor woman. Hope she feels better soon

KenAdams · 05/07/2021 21:32

I thought she looked like she was hyperventilating when she was sitting down but I'm not sure. She didn't look right for quite a while though.

I agree about the pressure, the media hype must have been difficult to try and live up to. I know it's inevitable but I think sometimes we forget just how young some people are when they're thrust into the spotlight and expect them to just cope with it.

Meltinthemiddle · 05/07/2021 21:36

I imagine too with all those people in centre court, enclosed and so late at night didn't t help especially under current circumstances.

Crockof · 05/07/2021 21:42

She won £180,000 prize money, she has worked every moment for years and she has done better than she would have dared to dream. The crowds and the media interest is what finances tennis players, she chose to be there.
I do hope she feels better and she should be so very proud of herself.

Amdone123 · 05/07/2021 21:44

She's had a great run and hopefully she's very proud of herself.
It looked to me like she'd pulled a muscle near her chest area as she was touching that area at 2 love down. Her opponent is a hard hitter and in trying to keep up, I think this happened.
Hope she's OK.

TidyOmlette · 05/07/2021 21:45

Hopefully it’s something like nerves and not actual damage. There’s always next year and she’s still so young

BunnyRuddington · 05/07/2021 21:53

I was a bit surprised but she's fine brilliantly and has nothing to be ashamed of. Can't wait to see her play again.

KnickersOnTheLine · 05/07/2021 21:57

She’s so talented. I don’t think her issue was driven by nerves as such, I think she was physically unwell but not as a result of the pressure. Maybe to do with the time of day and how her meals were timed today, maybe a bug or muscle issue. Could be anything. She played so well tonight in spite of the problem. What a woman.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/07/2021 21:58

Hopefully she'll come back and be a regular feature at tournaments in coming years. Shes only just finished her A Levels.

Clawdy · 05/07/2021 21:59

I wondered if she had period pains maybe.

Classicbrunette · 05/07/2021 22:06

It’s such a shame, I wish her well. And as John McEnroe said it may not be detrimental to her and gives her time to asses things going forward as she’s so young.

AgnesNaismith · 05/07/2021 22:09

Looked like a panic attack to me. I hope she’s ok and back in her own time…she’ll win Wimbledon one day.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 05/07/2021 22:37

So sad to see. However Emma is a new raw talent and will go on to a brighter and better professional tennis career. She has shown some of her capability and as in recent interviews very competent, grounded and quite frankly unlike others who recently walked off the tournament circuit, Emma will be amazing and a name to look out for in forthcoming tournaments. She will learn to better cope under pressure but this is just a great start on the world tennis stage already as she has what it takes at the very highest level especially as it seems a bit more unpredictable at the top of the ladies game.

xprincessxjanetx · 05/07/2021 22:52

Bless her, she has done so well. I would not have been able to withstand that amount of pressure at 18 (probably still couldn't now!) It did look when she was sat down as if she was hyperventilating so I do wonder if it may have been a form of anxiety. Whatever happened to her I hope she makes a speedy recovery and is proud of how far she has come.

romatheroamer · 06/07/2021 13:01

I thought this was a physical thing and was surprised when McEnroe in kind of wise sage mode came out with it was all too much mentally and seemed to imply that there had been other youngsters (including him) who were stronger and had coped with this sudden focus better.

FANTINE2 · 06/07/2021 13:39

I think maybe one issue set off another and she was unable to catch her breath. Things then spiralled and she hit the wall.
Her match would have gone on last due to TV ratings. Waiting around is part of tennis life unfortunately.
My DS. used to play tennis at a reasonably high level ( nowhere nearbEmma’s std) and I have seen this happen in junior tennis. It is a very high pressure sport, even at the lower junior levels.
Having said all that no one knows for sure what happened. She is a talent though, and she will be back.

skodadoda · 06/07/2021 16:08

Piers Morgan
How about this comment on Twitter by that well known doctor, Piers Morgan!

McEnroe told the truth. Ms Raducuna’s a talented player but couldn’t handle the pressure & quit when she was losing badly. Not ‘brave’, just a shame. If I were her, I’d tell my fans to stop abusing McEnroe, & seek his advice on how to toughen up & become a champion like he was*

PompomDahlia · 06/07/2021 16:30

It could have been a physical thing - period pain/bug/stomach upset mixed with the panic of the thought of being ill so publicly and facing all the hype. It seemed excessively late to start the match as well. Some of the scheduling decisions seem a bit off this year. Hope she is getting support and can come back recovered next year

GrouchyKiwi · 06/07/2021 16:38

She said today that she couldn't breathe and was feeling dizzy, and the medical staff told her she shouldn't continue to play.

I don't think the organisers did her any favours by putting her last on a show court.

Mac can opine all he likes about how he handled the pressure better; it was a different world when he played. He didn't have the pressure of social media to contend with, or the British media bigging him up.

She seems to be very sensible, has a good team around her, and hasn't shot up the rankings so much that she'll automatically qualify for every big tournament. The smaller competitions, and the qualifying rounds should help her.

She's brilliant, I think, and has a fantastic career ahead of her.

ilovesooty · 06/07/2021 16:44

If you have physical pain like a pulled muscle it probably would affect your breathing. She's done brilliantly and can be really proud.

VeganVeal · 06/07/2021 16:54

After having a curry and 4 pints for lunch is wasnt going to end well

Mischance · 06/07/2021 16:57

It now sounds as though it was stress-induced shortness of breath. Heaven knows there was enough stress on her to make anybody produce a psychosomatic symptom like this.

giletrouge · 06/07/2021 17:01

I see Piers Morgan has found himself a new young woman to bully.
What a prick he is. Wish he would shut the fuck up.
