That poor poor girl. So much pressure for her at her age and then for her journey to end like that! Absolutely gut wrenching, I hope she's OK.

OP posts:
paniniswapx3 · 06/07/2021 18:39

I think she did brilliantly and came across so well with Sue earlier - no doubt she has a fantastic future in front of her (whatever that might be).

I don't think John McEnroe said anything wrong at all - I was watching it and he simply gave his opinion as a pundit. He wasn't slagging her off and was talking about how well she has done and how much she'll learn from the experience. He also referenced Sampras and others vomiting with nerves and how that hadn't held them back. I totally hate how people can't give an honest opinion anymore, especially when they're experts in the field. Really hope that stops soon!

Crockof · 06/07/2021 18:45

@Oblomov21

She has won three singles titles on the ITF Circuit.
About 100 people watching. Coming on the back of covid and restrictions,.
Frownette · 06/07/2021 18:54

@VeganVeal

After having a curry and 4 pints for lunch is wasnt going to end well
What are you on about?

She is a brilliant player and so young, hopefully she'll bounce back

worktrip · 06/07/2021 19:02

It sounded like a panic attack. Quite normal under the circumstances

FeatheredHope · 06/07/2021 19:02

The fact that McEnroe and Morgan have the balls to comment on “handling pressure” should tell you everything you need to know about misogyny.
One is famous for stropping off a set as soon as he was questioned on his behaviour and the other is known for his aggressive angry outbursts whenever things didn’t go his way.
The hypocrisy is spectacular.

@IcedSpice

Who?
Have you reported to the internet that your Google is broken?
Frownette · 06/07/2021 19:05

Piers was just being plain nasty

Who?

So dismissive.
I'm sorry your tennis career never got going.

Misdirected snark there, I dont watch tennis, so I have literally no idea who she is

Normally the first thread or so explain who people are when they are being discussed.
This one didn't

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 19:11

She did an amazing job and I don't automatically accept it was "nerves" or anything like that. If it was, fine, but much more likely to be something physical. Young people can be much more resilient than their older peers.

John McEnroe needs to review his younger temper tantrums and think about what he could have learned at an earlier age learn from this high class professional.

Meadowlands1 · 06/07/2021 19:16

Amazing young woman and am so impressed she played so well with such nerves. I think her publicly saying the pressure made her ill is a good thing. She is raising awareness and she has my utmost admiration. Peers, McEnroe et al having an opinion on her - they can bugger off.

TSSDNCOP · 06/07/2021 19:18

@IcedSpice there was literally no need to provide a wiki reference, the woman's been headline news for days.

I really do think it looked physical initially, there were some hard going rallies and afterwards it looked like she couldn't catch her breath. Imagine that with the pressure of the match, the real possibility of vomiting or fainting and knowing with mounting dread you are going to need to pull the match.

skodadoda · 06/07/2021 19:20

@D0D0

Meant to quote *@skodadoda ‘s post there, not @giletrouge*
Relieved that I’m not alone in making mistakes with quoting and copying 😏💐
Toasty280 · 06/07/2021 19:22

She did amazing-great role model for girls-hopefully she will be back and go on to win Wimbledon one day!

ElizabethTudor · 06/07/2021 19:30

@GlencoraP

Surely she's played tennis for years and her coach prepared her mentally for Wimbledon

She has only played two matches on the tour before Wimbledon, she was given a wild card and no one expected her to get through the first round. And certainly not past the first week. Added to which she has had the pressure of having to stay in the Covid bubble with no access to family support etc .

And, as she said in her interview with Sue B, prior to Wimbledon, the biggest crowd she’d played in front of was 100. So no, I don’t think any coach can prepare an 18 year old for what she faced. And as for Piers Morgan - he’s just a twat. I also wasn’t impressed with John McEnroe’s comments last night. I thought it was unedifying to speculate what the cause of her withdrawal was, before she herself had spoken. And then, as per bloody usual, to compare it to his playing days. Which, as someone else said upthread, is totally incomparable ...

There is such a thing as Google, you know. Hmm

I seriously have not seen her name anywhere but in Chat...

I think it's not so much you didn't know, but that you seem so determined not to even now @IcedSpice

Not in my experience, the normal assumption would be that if you want to contribute to a thread about a person you've never heard of you'd Google them first not expect a primer in the OP

IcedSpice · 06/07/2021 20:41

well at least the mumsnet police were kind when they let me know eh?

Souther · 06/07/2021 20:48

I just find her honesty refreshing, hopefully she'll bounce back from this experience.

She comes across really well in her interviews

paniniswapx3 · 06/07/2021 20:48

Me too @Souther

ozymandiusking · 06/07/2021 21:04

I remarked to DH when she arrived on court that she looked rather pale.
Despite the the Wimbledon bosses saying the they took everything into consideration when arranging the times of matches, I think it was a very long wait for a young girl, especially as it was her first time.
But, I think she'll be back, and good luck with her "A" Level results.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 06/07/2021 21:13

She did amazingly well. It's a shame her match wasn't earlier in the day, it might have been kinder for her had the order of play been different. She has a great attitude, she made no fuss about the order and said she was happy to play at any time. I just know if I'm nervous I'm much better getting on and doing it earlier in the day if possible!

She has so much to be proud of, I've no doubt she's got a fantastic future ahead of her.

TiddleTaddleTat · 06/07/2021 21:55

I really felt for her.
It looked like a nasty panic attack to me.
It must have been horrible.
I hope she can reflect on what she achieved and come back next year a little older and wiser.
