Anyone know of a hairdresser that actually listens?

I asked for medium to light brown and it's now almost black. It's not the first time this has happened (with different hairdressers) why are hairdressers so bad at listening?

On to the next one. Don't they want repeat customers?

Oh that’s annoying. I have had same hairdresser for years they are super
Ask around for recommendations? Any friends with good haircut & colour who can recimmend

BelterDelta · 03/07/2021 18:33

I always show a photo. A picture says a thousand words and all that.

Theunamedcat · 03/07/2021 18:35

Did they say anything or try to fix it? Some hair really grabs colour?

lovescaca · 03/07/2021 18:37

Sounds like an inexperienced hairdresser.

hauntedvagina · 03/07/2021 18:38

What was the hairdressers suggestion when you told her you weren't happy with the colour?

JoJoandGreg · 03/07/2021 18:51

I said, that's darker than I expected. She said well there was a lot of grey to colour.

First visit there for my hair, although I have been going there for years for my eyebrows. I will go elsewhere for my hair next time, I'm assuming they will notice I'm going elsewhere for my hair and if they ask, I'll tell them why. I'm not going to pay almost £100 to someone who doesn't do what I ask.

I had the same one for years but he moved away. I went to a new one last September - she made a mess of it. Today's also made a mess. I look like a badger - black base colour with white stripes through it. It certainly isn't the medium brown with caramel highlights that I asked for.

Oh I feel you’re pain. A bad hairdo you want to hide and cry

Grainjar · 03/07/2021 23:22

I don't know. I have greying medium to dark brown hair. It won't go caramel. It goes a gingery pink colour if lightened and gets horribly dry. Is what we want always possible I'd like to know.

Katekarate · 03/07/2021 23:23

What I've learned over the years is you've got to be ruthless. One crap cut/colour and I go elsewhere now. There are hairdressers out there that listen, it's not worth wasting time on one who's not the correct fit for you.
Given that you've not got what you asked for though OP, is it worth maybe going back and asking for someone senior to fix it?

My old hairdresser managed to do medium brown with caramel highlights. I'm thinking of travelling from Manchester to London every time I need my hair colouring.

In the meantime, I think I'm going to put a dark blonde semi permanent over this to try and get rid of the white stripes. This won't do anything about the black base though - I'll have to grow that out.

Absolutely. If she can't be arsed listening and doing my hair how I ask her to do it, why would I keep going back and paying her to make my hair look terrible.

Ah ok. So if it's possible then yes I can see why you're upset.

123fushia · 03/07/2021 23:40

I have just changed mine. It was tricky as I’ve been to her home for over ten years but I felt she was a bit complacent and the last time made me much too blonde. I made an appt at a salon and went for colour cut and blow. She made it too dark but I was able to make an appt for the next day and she sorted it out without extra charge. It hasn’t felt this good for years! I love it. I was careful to be polite to both of them and now happily have a new hairdresser.

I was polite - I just said it's darker than I expected it to be. She shrugged and said there was a lot of grey to colour. She wasn't concerned in the slightest. Which is part of the reason I don't want to go back.

It's actually easier to make it darker than it is to lighten it, that's why I'm pissed of about the black base colour. I can darken the white stripes at home myself with a semi permanent.

My hairdresser moved away and I've tried three since and none seem able to give me a fringe Confused I've even taken in a photo of me with a fringe from about 8 years ago but I end up either with one so long its in my face so gets tucked behind my ears or so wispy and non existent it may as well not be there. Fourth time lucky next month.

There are so many stories about crap hairdressers, I wonder how some of them stay in business. Good luck with the fringe!

Thank you good luck with the colour!

theDudesmummy · 03/07/2021 23:59

I aleays dyed my own hair from a box. I went to a super expensive place in the home counties to have a salon colour ad a treat. Asked for a rich dark brown. Got flat black. For £95. Looked absolutely hideous. Have never had a salon colour again.

fairyannie · 04/07/2021 00:00

I have a cut every six weeks and colour every 12 weeks.

I hate my hair.

Last cut took two minutes and then lots of faffing with appliances to kill time/justify the cost.

Just found out that well known salons charge similar prices - maybe I'll be listened to there.

Do hair dressers take advantage of regular clients who they know wouldn't complain?

I agree with pp who said their hairdresser is complacent - I feel the same.

I think they rely on people being 'creatures of habit' - they only have to make an effort with the first appointment and then you're lulled into a false sense of security.

I'm off to Toni and Guy.

This was my first appointment- not going to go back and risk worse hair!

This is why I dye my own hair now, and just go to the hairdressers for cuts. I'm blonde and tired of them all turning my roots ginger. I followed some advice from Brad Mondo (celeb hairdresser) on how to dye your blonde hair from home and for £4 I do a better job than a £65 colour dye at the salon does

smudgemylife · 04/07/2021 02:12

You mentioned you're in Manchester, can recommend house of finesse (both locations) and muse hair as being fab at colouring, especially balayage and highlights. Might save you a trip to London of you're willing to drive across the city instead.
