Has anyone had their second dose Moderna?

Hello, I am due to have my second dose Moderna vaccine soon, but I suffer from health anxiety so I am feeling quite nervous about it. I think this is partly because all my friends and family have had either AZ or Pfizer, so there's alot of information on those, but I don't know anyone besides myself who has had Moderna. It would help me if I could hear experiences in terms of side effects from anyone who has had both doses of Moderna.

Just to add that after my first dose Moderna I had to stay at the vaccination centre for an additional 15 minutes, as I had the sensation of a tightening feeling in my left jaw and left side of my neck (I had the jab in my left arm), this resolved completely within around 45 minutes, then a few hours later I had a very sore arm, fatigue, mild nausea and a swollen lymph node under the armpit on the 5th day after the vaccine, a rash on the underside of the arm and armpit where I had the vaccine, feeling light headed and also a short spell of dizziness. All these side effects resolved by the 10th day post vaccination.

Having read that the second dose Moderna can produce stronger side effects has triggered my health anxiety, so any reassurance would be greatly appreciated. I hope there is someone out there who has had their second Moderna and had a positive experience, although I know people react differently. I really want to have my second dose for maximum protection for myself and others around me, but I don't want to feel so fearful.

Also, there are 11 weeks between my first dose and second dose. Is anyone aware of how this interval affects the efficacy of the vaccine? I have read that a longer interval is better for AZ vaccine, but can't find any similar information for Moderna.

Thank you!

Hi lovely
I have health anxiety too
My DD and I had 2nd doses last Friday
Both extreme fatigue Saturday, aching limbs.dd had headache/tightness in neck and head.i didn't but felt "foggy brained".we both slept loads
I had very painful armpit jab side, she didn't(we both had discomfort with that 10 days after jab 1).
Day 2 she was improving and did some shopping, but needed pm nap.thereafter was ok just bit more tired than usual.shes fine now
It took me another couple days to shake fatigue and have had intermittent headaches(disclaimer I am not great at drinking much so that might have increased the length time I felt off as nurse did say drink plenty)

Keep reminding yourself it's better than having covid, and if you do struggle it's just a few days and will pass.

If you need to talk I will check this thread.sending hugs

I have mine tomorrow, but the only person I know to have had a second dose (they have only been available since the start of this week locally) had flu-like symptoms the day after the vaccination and was fine the following day.

couchparsnip · 03/07/2021 07:02

My friend had her 2nd Moderna dose recently and met me for dinner that evening. She said she was a bit tired and her arm was a little sore. Otherwise no symptoms.
The interval is about the same as you 11.5 weeks.
I checked in on her again after a few days and she'd continued to feel a bit tired for maybe 2 days and then was fine.

Hope that helps!

Husband had his 2nd Moderna dose last weekend. No side effects first time other than sore arm. No side effects second time other than sore arm.

RunAwayNow · 03/07/2021 08:34

Had my second on Monday after having zero side effects with the first. After 12 hours I felt rubbish - couldn't sleep, fever and very achy limbs. Suddenly felt fine again about 36 hours after the jab and have been fine since. Mine were 9 weeks apart.

Min75 · 03/07/2021 19:34

Thank you all for your reassurance. Good luck for tomorrow DaisyWaldron and thank you for reaching out Stilllivinginazoo. I will see if I can pm you.

Anyone else? Due to have mine today and feel sick with nerves 😔. Brought it forward due to the 19th opening everything up but mentally not prepared for it at all 😭😭

godwingolly · 11/07/2021 11:57

I had nothing after my first and a slight reaction to second. I felt a bit chilled in the 24 hours after. Also read you might get the more pronounced response after the second.

6 days after my second, my 13yo tested positive for C19. 7 days on, I’ve not developed symptoms.

So glad I’ve had both mine and the response you get is meant to be a good sign you are developing antibodies.

Normandy144 · 11/07/2021 12:05

I had no side effects after the first apart from a sore arm. After the 2nd dose my sore arm was worse and I felt a bit foggy / achy about 12 hours after wards. However not so much that it stopped me going out for lunch 24 hours later. After a good night's sleep the fog had gone and the sore arm was still there but starting to improve.

Thursa · 11/07/2021 12:05

I got “Covid arm” after the first jab. My whole upper arm was red and swollen for about three weeks, so I was worried about getting the second one. I had a sore arm for a few days and that was it.

Meltinthemiddle · 11/07/2021 12:10

Did you have it in the same arm? My arm still aches occasionally where I had it from last time 🙄 not sure if it's just in my head 😬

shivawn · 11/07/2021 12:39

My husband had Moderna. His arm was a bit sore the day after the second dose.

@LittleOverWhelmed

Myself, DH and two friends had the second dose of Moderna two weeks ago. All of us had the same reactions:
  • fine the rest if that day.
  • the next day, moderate fever (around 101’F), headache, absolutely wiped out, needed to sleep a lot (I went to bed 11pm, finally properly woke up 2.30pm the next day to collect DS from school 😳).
  • the following day 90% back to normal, “a little more tired than normal”
  • the following day, back to normal.

All of us were they same.

Advice:

  • plenty of water (think one of the problems is dehydration - hence headache)
  • paracetamol
  • no plans the day after: if you want to sleep, then sleep.

You might feel a bit rough, but it will be ok and VERY temporary.

As crazy as it sounds, a bit of a reaction like that is no bad thing: does show your body reacting to it.

It will be ok and a second vaccine is definitely the best things to do Flowers

Thank you I really appreciate your advice and reassurance. Will make sure I follow you advice, luckily I have tomorrow off at least

I had my 2nd 10 days ago. I was exactly the same as this poster so was my dh.
Alicay · 11/07/2021 13:13

2 doses here, sore arm after first. Bit tired after second, that was it. DH was fluey for 2 days after second.

Alicay · 11/07/2021 13:13

Sort of wish had had more of a reaction - to show it was ‘working’ and all that!

TheWashingMachine · 11/07/2021 13:13

I had it and do did my DH we were both fine but felt pretty wiped out after having the second vaccine. I got a quite Sore swollen arm but it went after three days. All good, glad I got it done.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2021 13:16

I had my second dose of Moderna four weeks after my first as that's the recommended gap here in Ireland.

After the first one I was more tired than normal for a couple of days. After the second the side effects hit me after 24 hours and I felt mildly nauseous and like I was coming down with something. Twelve hours later the symptoms just disappeared like a switch being turned off.

Talking to friends, the second dose reactions have been a mixture. Several had no side effects whatsoever, most had mild side effects like mine, only two felt really rough and had to go to bed with painkillers.

Do get your jab, it increases your protection and even if you do get sick effects it's better than catching covid.

DaisyWaldron · 11/07/2021 14:55

DH and I both had ours a week ago, at 11:30 am.We both felt mostly fine for the rest of the day, but with increasingly sore arms. We drank plenty of water and went to bed. We then both woke up at around 2:30am, DH because he had a mild fever, me because my arm was very painful. When we got up that morning, I couldn't move my arm at the shoulder - it felt like muscle exhaustion from weight training, and I needed help getting dressed. My range of movement increased gradually over the next 12 hours, until it felt a bit achy but worked normally.

For the rest of the day, DH and I both had mild headaches, shorts periods of mild fever, muscle/joint pain, tiredness, sometimes felt mildly queasy and had a general feeling of malaise. The next day, DH was completely back to normal apart from a slightly stiff arm, and I felt a bit more tired than usual for another 2 days, but that might just have been due to the lack of sleep on the first night.

Overall, it was around 24 hours of minor illness. I would have phoned in sick if I hadn't arranged the vaccine for my days off, but it would have been the sort of close call that would leave me lying on the sofa feeling a bit guilty. I was fine going to work the next day.

lljkk · 11/07/2021 15:02

All my (lots of my) American contacts seem to have Moderna. 3 week interval to 2nd dose. They never mention any side effects at all.

21yo DS had Moderna & says "we all suffered" (Army). They all (few hundred soldiers) next day went on exhausting exercise anyway -- nobody abandoned. He'll get 2nd jab 4 weeks after 1st.

Shesaysso · 11/07/2021 15:10

Fine after first dose - 2nd dose felt rubbish and like I had flu the day after (high temp, chills etc), woke up the following day completely fine again.

MouseholeCat · 11/07/2021 15:26

My husband had Moderna. He did have a slightly stronger reaction than he did to the first shot, but not massively so. He felt like he had a cold about 24 hours after receiving it, but he took some ibuprofen and went to bed early and felt fine by the morning. I had Pfizer and the way it played out was extremely similar.

EbbandTheWanderingHearts · 11/07/2021 15:42

Apart from a sore arm, I didn't have any side effects from either jabs. Neither did my husband.
