What do you do on a UK holiday?

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 19:27

First time on a UK holiday in my life. Kids have never been out of the city they were born in unless in a plane.
They are bored to tears.
What do you do??
Don't want to say exact location but it is coastal wales and we have driven here.
Honestly don't blame the folk going abroad despite restrictions. We are climbing the walls.
Been to 4 villages, takes less than an hour to walk around each one. Shitty cafés, food like school dinners. Tide is in so looked at the sea. Everybody in full winter clobber. I am not investing in body boards cos I never want to come back. Wales match is not even showing anywhere. I am 90% leaning towards cutting my losses and going home tomorrow, I have decorating/gardening I could be doing.

Save us mnetters!

@Hemsbyboc - Where on Anglesey are you?

Stellaroses · 26/06/2021 23:06

@RavenclawesomeCrone 👋

Oakwood is absolutely MILES away, at least 4 hours!
Greenwood (mainland) is not a big theme park but it is a bit of a laugh if your teens are willing. It’s an eco theme oark so has tobogan run things, paddle boats, and an eco roller coaster Not too babyish for my 12 year old.

shallIswim · 26/06/2021 23:07

Kayaking
Paddleboarding
Sailing
Coasteering
All done on Anglesey, and all stuff teens love
C'mon OP you can do it... get up early tomorrow and get booking!

littlepieces · 26/06/2021 23:07

What did you do on your overseas holidays?

RedlightGreenlight · 26/06/2021 23:10

What a sad thread!
You are missing out on so much, as are your children.

MrsDThomas · 26/06/2021 23:10

@LocalHobo there is a very long waiting list for the Sosban. And i don’t mean a few weeks or months. Its a few years.

BarbarianMum · 26/06/2021 23:10

Body boards and wetsuits. Paddle boarding. Kayaking. Mountain biking.

I've got teen lads a y they will do a walk and look at one castle/garden/whatever but after that they want to be active.

LawnFever · 26/06/2021 23:11

@Hemsbyboc

We have been out of Liverpool many times. They have been to Australia Hmm we have just never been around the UK. If we have a day or 2 off, we will see local friends, do something around the house. 3 days or more? 19.99 ryanair return to Copenhagen is cheaper than the train to London
If you’re always going abroad is budget of a train to London really the issue?

Never even having the desire to visit the capital city of the country you live in it really quite odd, and a shame your kids aren’t experiencing much of the UK

FeatheredHope · 26/06/2021 23:11

14 pages later and I am still utterly stunned by your attitude. And shocked that your kids haven’t actually seen any other part of the UK.

Iggi999 · 26/06/2021 23:11

It surprises me more than you have seen nothing of the U.K. since you are not originally from here. Surely you would be keen to see more of the country you now live in? Whenever I go abroad I manage to visit more than one place, how much easier is it to do it in the place you live!

bluelemming · 26/06/2021 23:12

Your poor kids. Do they not have any curiosity or imagination either?

PussGirl · 26/06/2021 23:16

Don't forget to leave plenty of litter - that's what folk who usually go abroad for holidays seem to be doing in the UK

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 23:17

I know plenty of people who have never travelled the country, it is not that unusual surely? Some people just don't have the money nor inclination

Things my young teens enjoyed in Wales and on other UK holidays
Climbing Snowdon
Visiting castles
Boat rides
Looking at Dr Who and Torchwood locations around Cardiff
Being allowed to go for pizza or ice creams 'alone' (while we ate at a nearby cafe.
Kayaking
Hiring bikes

Stellaroses · 26/06/2021 23:18

My favourite walks:
Under the bridges. Start at Carreg Bran Hotel in Llanfairpwll. Leads to boardwalks through woodlands along the straits.
Aberffraw - along reservoir, over sand dunes, to beautiful beach in any weather.
Walk to Ynys Llanddwyn - this is unmissable. My favourite place and walk anywhere, and I have travelled a lot. Rivals New Zealand. Forest, sandunes, historic island (with romantic myth attached), long sandy beach, snow capped mountains.
Rhosneigr beach
Penmon Point. Cliff walk. Secret ruined castle boardwalk walk v nearby called Aberlleiniog - worth a wander.
Moelfre - lunch or coffee and cake at Ann’s Pantry and then short stroll along the cliff path. Ice cream.

Hiraethus now ☺️

It's precisely for this reason that I'm off to an amber country later this summer. Don't fancy paying £4k for some mouldy bungalow in some cold, wet shithole. 5 day quarantine seems like a small price to pay.

PhilSwagielka · 26/06/2021 23:20

I've been to Anglesey, Cardiff, Llangollen (although that was a school camp and it sucked, but the walks were good), Llandudno and a couple of other bits and Wales is not that bad. We went to Oakwood one year, I've been to a couple of castles and a few trips to Theatr Clwyd. Cardiff is lovely and Portmeirion is a magical place as well.

As a Manics fan, I should probably go to one of the places they've sung about. It has some pretty little islands, Caldey being one of them.

theleavesaregreen · 26/06/2021 23:21

Children love arcades. Fun ice cream parlour type places. Paddling and swimming in the sea. Sand castles. I love the British seaside. Wales has great coastal walks.
You sound very boring and intent on wrecking the planet rather than exploring what's on your own doorstep. You do know that actual foreigners visit the UK on holiday?

Stellaroses · 26/06/2021 23:21

Come on then @Hemsbyboc, what’s your plan for tomorrow?

PhilSwagielka · 26/06/2021 23:21

Waitwaitwait, you're a Scouser?! You must be the first Scouser I've encountered who hates Wales. All the ones I know love the place, North Wales is like a second Liverpool.

Maireas · 26/06/2021 23:22

Reading this thread, I just have to say a big thank you to all you amazing parents on here. I'm a secondary school teacher, and the teenagers I teach are mostly so interested, engaged, curious and resilient learners. They don't moan about wet break or lunch, and work through every activity in every lesson. That's down to your great parenting, encouraging them away from the WiFi, challenging them and trying new and different stuff. You make my job (mostly!) enjoyable. xx

SallyCinnabon · 26/06/2021 23:22

Hang on, you’re scoffing at the weather in Wales and it’s ‘shitty’ coastal towns but happy to pop to Denmark? I’ve been to Denmark (yes it’s beautiful - just like Wales) but it also has the same weather as the U.K., if not worse, and the coastal towns are honestly not better.

Sounds like you just rate anything not in the U.K. as better. Not sure why you’re such a snob.

Me and DP went to Frome today, just out the blue as we’ve never been. We wandered a bit, popped in some amazing independent shops, had a lovely meal and a few cocktails and just discovered a new place. It was great, you should try it sometime!

Gwenhwyfar · 26/06/2021 23:23

They only leave Liverpool to go abroad.
MaMelon · 26/06/2021 23:23

To have stayed in one city and never visited anywhere else in the UK in the many years they’ve lived here? Yeah, it’s unusual.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 26/06/2021 23:23

@Hemsbyboc it’s not just travelling the country we’re talking about though.
They’ve never been to a beach, a theme park, a zoo, a mountain etc in their home country.
It’s desperately sad.
