What do you do on a UK holiday?

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 19:27

First time on a UK holiday in my life. Kids have never been out of the city they were born in unless in a plane.
They are bored to tears.
What do you do??
Don't want to say exact location but it is coastal wales and we have driven here.
Honestly don't blame the folk going abroad despite restrictions. We are climbing the walls.
Been to 4 villages, takes less than an hour to walk around each one. Shitty cafés, food like school dinners. Tide is in so looked at the sea. Everybody in full winter clobber. I am not investing in body boards cos I never want to come back. Wales match is not even showing anywhere. I am 90% leaning towards cutting my losses and going home tomorrow, I have decorating/gardening I could be doing.

Save us mnetters!

Waving @Stellaroses

I live in Llanfairpwll, and I'd say it's the most over rated place on the island.

Go to Pili Palas - much more than butterflies, big bugs, lizards, farm animals and a good amount of it is inside.
DD starts her new job there on Monday, so be nice to the nervous one with the pink hair!

LizJamIsFab · 26/06/2021 22:48

Reading this I now CANNOT WAIT for my next holiday in Wales (as soon as schools close!).
I have happy memories of holidays in UK weather as a teen so it can be done! Lots of teens when I grew up didn’t holiday abroad (and I’m only 40!).
Also, whilst trying not to sound too critical, your teens really sound like they could do with this! A break from WiFi/their usual. Don’t go to Liverpool to do “teenage” friendly things ?do people mean shopping and cinema? So boring!
Climb a mountain, jump in a lake, literally!

Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 22:48

Kids aren't at school as it is weekend

Also, they work from home half of the week because covid

Portmeirion is stunning

PrincessesRUs · 26/06/2021 22:48

Sorry - Oakwood is South Wales!

Maryann1975 · 26/06/2021 22:50

I haven’t RTFT, but if you are near snowdonia, we went to zipworld and did the bounce below thing that my similar aged dc enjoyed and paddle boarding on a lake which was great fun. We hired wet suits with the board, so we weren’t cold and jumping on and off the board was far more fun than I thought it was going to be.

Never been out of Liverpool in 15 years? Wow. Just Wow.
Take your kids to Manchester for God's sake. Or the Lake District. You live so close to Snowdon, but have never been?? Get on a train and go to London.

Seriously, have a week in London instead of Barcelona. Let them see the Capital City of where you live.

hopeishere · 26/06/2021 22:52

Buy the bodyboard and rent some wetsuits.

If they're old enough let them have a Wi-Fi day while you and DH go out.

GiantKitten · 26/06/2021 22:53

@Hemsbyboc get them to look up some episodes of The Prisoner on YouTube and then take them to Portmeirion Grin

LizJamIsFab · 26/06/2021 22:53

Sorry Blush x post with OP. I’m amazed you’ve lived in Liverpool and not been out in North Wales.

wishuponarainbow · 26/06/2021 22:53

Buy a couple of wetsuits and bodyboards. Hours of fun to be had and you won't feel that cold! Enjoy just not being at home

MaMelon · 26/06/2021 22:54

You live in Liverpool - and you’ve never thought to visit anywhere else in the 4 countries plus numerous small islands that make up the UK?!!

Marcanana · 26/06/2021 22:55

I'm curious to know what kind of better activities you'd be doing on a trip to similarly a rural / beachy area of Denmark? Perhaps it's time to let your kids learn a little about their homeland rather than keep taking them back to yours?

Looks like you've got a decent forecast for the next few days so that's good. I don't know Anglesey all that well - it's quiet and quite beachy but there are some lovely ones. Rib rides on the Menai Straits are pretty cool!

Into Snowdonia which I do know better, I recommend horse riding in Gwydir Forest, high ropes (loads of them everywhere), Bounce Below and zip lines at Blaenau Ffestiniog, Llanberis Slate Museum / Country Park (take a rowing boat out on the lake) Caernarfon and Conwy Castles....

Do you know the expression "Positivity breeds Content"? I'd be keeping that in mind!

I know, it’s fucking mind boggling! If people don’t have too much money then I’d understand but jetting off to other European cities and yet not even been to London or even a neighbouring city? How? I was going to say why but I think I can guess from OP’s posts. Seems to turn her nose up at UK holidays, not sure why, this country is beautiful, so many things she’s missing, but ahh well, more for us!
Hemsbyboc · 26/06/2021 22:57

We have been out of Liverpool many times. They have been to Australia Hmm we have just never been around the UK. If we have a day or 2 off, we will see local friends, do something around the house.
3 days or more? 19.99 ryanair return to Copenhagen is cheaper than the train to London

So they’ve never been to Alton towers, Drayton manor, Southport, Chester zoo, Cheshire oaks, the Trafford centre? This is baffling and actually really sad.

Doublestar · 26/06/2021 23:00

Teens are bored wherever you go, fact. Bad weather can make any holiday grim, don't blame Wales!

I holiday regularly in abersoch, don't really know Anglesey but i would second Portmeirion and Greenwood eco theme park (my 13 & 15 yo still like it and have been going since they were small).

There is a reason people start leaving their kids at home from the age of about 16 when they go away!

Sennedd · 26/06/2021 23:00

I haven’t read the whole thread but there are fabulous places to eat on Anglesey and also in Caernarfon and Bangor. Dylan’s in Menai Bridge, the Black Seal in Treaddur Bay are just two of many.

Maggiesfarm · 26/06/2021 23:00

I don't understand how children have reached their teens without leaving the city they were born in, except on a plane. I thought everyone, especially with children, at least had days out in the country.

It's tough that the weather isn't good but you are in a lovely part of the world with plenty to see.

PhillipPhillop · 26/06/2021 23:01

You could have just done a day trip to Anglesey, why choose it as a holiday destination? You just wanted to moan I think! Why didn't you want to travel further south for potentially better weather? Or look at another city if the forecast was bad. You live on the doorstep of some amazing parts of the UK. Time to explore? You never know, your teen might find something he likes.

MaMelon · 26/06/2021 23:01

Yes, we know they’ve been to other countries - you’ve told us that. What few people can get their head around is that they’ve never been to other parts of the UK. Never visited London, Bath, Edinburgh, the Highlands, Cornwell etc etc etc - holiday destinations for 41 million tourists in 2019. Unbelievable.

ByTheStarryNight · 26/06/2021 23:02

Phew. If enough of the novice UK holidayers can't figure out how to enjoy themselves, then next year we stand a chance of getting a holiday cottage in Wales at a more normal price (we go every year, but not this year as prices are crazy).

OP you need to do some planning, wear suitable clothing for the weather, and tell your teenagers to cop on and show some interest.

LadyPoison · 26/06/2021 23:02

I'm actually wondering why the OP is living in the UK. She clearly has no interest in this country at all.

Such a shame

littlepieces · 26/06/2021 23:04

Wow. You sound fantastic fun.

Sorry, but that is just not normal!
