Boiled eggs and soldiers

What’s your ideal ratio? I have 2 (large) eggs and 3 slices of (standard shop bought granary) toast. 2 slices isn’t quite enough, 3 slices is a couple of soldiers too many.
Just made it for ds, the eggs were slightly smaller than usual and he said 2 slices of toast was the perfect amount.
Dh just came into the kitchen and said 4 slices is the perfect amount Shock
How do you eat yours?

2 eggs and 2 slices of toast.

Naggety · 26/06/2021 15:07

So I'm the only one who has 1 egg. I think that's because my parents only ever gave me one as a child, and I'm only just realising the the beauty of being an adult means I can have TWO eggs!
Me neither! It had never occurred to me to have more than one!

DrCoconut · 26/06/2021 15:09

@LindaEllen I was never given more than one egg. It was considered gluttonous. Recipes involving multiple eggs were also used sparingly. There was no general stinginess with food, I think the egg thing was the result of my mum being born when rationing was still in place. Same with milk, tinned foods, chocolate etc. "Lavish" eating was not done in her childhood. Plain but nutritious food in good amounts was and although we didn't have a WW2 diet some elements stuck.
As for the ideal egg:slice of toast ratio I'd say 1:2. But runny eggs are the work of the devil. They need to be hard boiled and sliced onto the toast.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/06/2021 15:44

Two large eggs, two slices of toast.

Scoop the yolk out onto the toast and sprinkle with a touch of salt, give the egg white to the cat

WunWun · 26/06/2021 15:48

Runny egg is disgusting, so none of each for me.

Backhills · 26/06/2021 16:08

I have one slice per egg, but bread not toast, with thick butter and cut into squares not soldiers and eaten with a spoon. Spoonful of egg, square of bread on top.

This is how it was served to me as a child. I only realised recently, after 50 years, that it's a bit odd.

MintyCedric · 26/06/2021 16:21

3 large eggs d 2 slices of buttered white toast, or asparagus wrapped in prosciutto if I'm watching the cards.

VeganVeal · 26/06/2021 16:46

Half a quail egg and one soldier and to be honest I'm stuffed for the day

Anyhow, I have one egg and two pieces of toast. I do have toast left over at the end and just eat it with butter, but no problem with that.

Thanks everyone you've inspired me to pull the 'adult' card and eat multiple eggs from now on!

Haha me too! I was always given one as a child with 1-2 slices of toast and just continued to do it that way into adulthood...I'd never even thought about changing it up, how uncreative of me 🤣
HandlebarLadyTash · 26/06/2021 17:33

I put marmite on the toast to stop the gannit like child pinching my soldiers
1 egg per slice & a teapot of tea

swapsicles · 26/06/2021 17:41

I have one egg and 2 slices of toast, on the rare occasion I have 2 eggs, ill have 3 slices of toast, always thought that seems a lot but obviously not.
However when I have cereal I usually follow it with toast so I'm not a small eater, my waistband tells me that too!

KitchenWarrior · 26/06/2021 17:41

One egg and two slices of homemade brown toast with lots of butter and salt.

Can't be too eggstravagant these days.

longtompot · 26/06/2021 17:45

My yd is with you on this. Hates runny egg yolks, loves them firmly set.
steppemum · 26/06/2021 17:54

I keep hens,
I used to have some very large hens, big fat things.
They were as happy as larry and laid huge eggs.

Now we have more normal sized hens and get medium to large eggs.

Now, the VERY BEST eggs are home grown duck eggs. One toast per egg, dip in yolk, ninnle, dip again until soldier is gone.
Each white with a spoon.

Nothing beats a duck egg. It is almost enough to get me to keep ducks alongside my hens, but then I remember the houdini ducks trying to get to the garden pond and I decide hens eggs will do (for those worried about my ducks, they had a pond, they just thought the garden fish pond look better)

steppemum · 26/06/2021 17:58

blimey got so carried away that the typos are unreadable.

dip toast in yolk and then NIBBLE, then dip same soldier again.
eat the white with a spoon.

Love runny yolks, would rather have wobbly white than over cooked yolks.

GreyhoundG1rl · 26/06/2021 18:03

@furryous

All these posters having large eggs Sad they're really bad for hen welfare!
Genuine question, can you control what size the eggs are?
Fuckingcrustybread · 26/06/2021 18:04

We have Bonsai hens and bread so the eggs are the size of a match head. The toast is the size of a very fat persons my little finger. I'm only able to eat one of these per month, any more and I'm completely stuffed.

CinnamonStar · 26/06/2021 18:16

One egg, and two slices of toast with marmite, or, ideally, smoked mackerel pate.

I buy boxes of mixed size eggs, and choose the biggest one.

Never thought of having 2 eggs, doesn't the second go hard and cold while you are eating the first?

And while we are on the subject, does a large egg equal larger yolk, or more white?

SiobhanSharpe · 26/06/2021 18:21

Ninkanink we kept hens for many years and the older girls used to lay fewer but much larger eggs. They were delicious.
My favourite egg/toast combo was a boiled egg sandwich, one large soft boiled egg between two sliced of thickly buttered toast, salt and pepper.
And FYI you don't need to wrap cooked asparagus spears in prosciutto before dipping them in the boiled egg, they are lovely dipped just as they are. Oh, go on then, perhaps a bit of melted butter first.

Ninkanink · 26/06/2021 18:23

@SiobhanSharpe yes I’d heard something about young chickens laying little eggs. 😊😊 I do eat asparagus on its own with eggs too, but then I’ll usually poach the eggs (I get into habits with things like that).

SiobhanSharpe · 26/06/2021 18:24

Cinnamon if you want to be sure of a high yolk to white ratio then go for duck eggs.
A larger hen's egg does have a larger yolk but you also get more white.

exLtEveDallas · 26/06/2021 18:25

I always make Cuppy Egg (medium boiled eggs, peeled and put in a mug with a knob of butter, salt & pepper and bashed about so it’s almost like a warm egg Mayo) rather than boiled dippy eggs and there is always enough for 3 slices of toast with 2 eggs.

Ninkanink · 26/06/2021 18:28

@CinnamonStar I’m greedy so I eat the first egg pretty quickly. Grin

Generally I cover the second egg with its top to keep it warm so it might get slightly more cooked but it’s only marginal and if there’s some egg yolk that’s no longer runny then it’ll still be lovely and soft so I just spread it on the bread and enjoy it that way.

Sigh I really want egg and soldiers for breakfast tomorrow but I’ve no eggs and no bread!!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 26/06/2021 18:28

Big hens lay big eggs, small hens lay small eggs. No welfare issues involved. We have both ends of the scale.

Four eggs, a bit of butter, no bread or toast.

Floralnomad · 26/06/2021 18:31

2 eggs , free range medium or large and 1 small slice of whole meal toast cut into 4 and I have to share with the dog .
