Is a removals service worth it?

Moving 45 mins away, 3 bed house to 4 bed house, we have lots of stuff.. been quoted £440 for removals, option £125 on top for packing service. DH insisting we can do it ourselves for £100 if we hire a van for the day, says that it isn't worth the money we could save and spend on nice new things for the house.

Surely it's worth it? We both work, we have young kids, surely it's just so much easier to pay and have it largely sorted for us?

Last time we moved we had nothing so did it ourselves, but we've got so much now (+ 2 kids we didn't have last time!) I just can't imagine the stress of trying to DIY it.

OHMYGOD it’s so worth it! It will takes your DAYS to pack, and all day to move yourselves. It is exhausting, and horrible.

NeedNewKnees · 26/06/2021 09:33

So very, very worth it

Candleabra · 26/06/2021 09:34

Best value service ever. Get the packing included too. You won't regret it.

So worth it. Moved a few months ago and we packed it all but had removal firm on the day. They were much faster than we could ever be. All we had to do on the day was finish cleaning and pick up the keys.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 26/06/2021 09:34

Definitely worth it!! Its one of these things that takes ages, no friends ever want to help because its a shit job either!

moomin11 · 26/06/2021 09:34

I've always packed myself as I can have a clear out at the same time but yes definitely pay for movers, no question!

Golden2021 · 26/06/2021 09:35

It is an absolute necessity. Also the packing service. We moved in and the company built all our beds, wardrobes etc. We just had to put our stuff away. We were completely unpacked in 2 or 3 days. Worth every penny. They wrap chests of drawers so you don't even need to empty them. If I didn't have kids I might have given it a go. They built the kids beds including a mid sleeper. I just put the bedding on and the kids could go to sleep.

olderthanyouthink · 26/06/2021 09:35

Yes, it's worth it! Moving my studio flat was a lot of work, let alone a whole house.

When we moved family home we paid for packing AND did a lot ourselves because we had a very densely packed loft

MrsFin · 26/06/2021 09:35

The one time we moved ourselves it nearly killed us! That was pre-children too.
We didn't think we had all that much stuff to move but when you get to emptying drawers and cupboards and shelves there's a lot more than you think.

Shelddd · 26/06/2021 09:36

Ask yourself how much putting out your back is worth..... Gotta be a lot more than 400..

I'd pack myself though.

maslinpan · 26/06/2021 09:36

SO worth paying for them to pack, money very well spent!

CliftonGreenYork · 26/06/2021 09:36

100%. Have done it for last 2 moves and it's wonderful.

HamCob · 26/06/2021 09:36

Your husband is crazy! It is worth every penny & that quote is quite reasonable to be honest

YesEllis · 26/06/2021 09:38

Oh wow does the packing service include them building things the other end as well as dismantling them in the old house?

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 26/06/2021 09:40

100% worth it - such a small part of the overall house moving cost.
They are so quick and so systematic and brilliant.
You might be able to hire a van for £100 but that presumes you don't value your time and sanity at all.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/06/2021 09:40

It is worth every penny, especially the packing service. They are like a team of locusts and do it in record time. When DM moved they did the loft too

Golden2021 · 26/06/2021 09:40

Yes, there are different levels. It's expensive but worth every penny.

Fitforforty · 26/06/2021 09:42

Assuming you are selling a buying then you won’t get the keys to your new property until you have emptied your told property. I doubt everything you own will fit in one van load.

CherryDocsInYrBalls · 26/06/2021 09:42

That's a really cheap quote. I'm a low wage single mum and I paid over £700 just for removals, I packed myself and had to pay extra for putting beds up.

mrstea301 · 26/06/2021 09:45

It's worth it 100%!!! Before we moved into our current house, we had moved three times in three years, and always did it ourselves, but we have sworn that any future moves will be done by lovers. It's so much less hassle and they can do it so much faster!

ApplesandBananas21 · 26/06/2021 09:47

100% worth it!
That's a really good quote! Get the packing it'll save you so much stress!

FinallyFluid · 26/06/2021 09:50

Tell your DH to crack on, you will wait at the new house to let him in with the contents of the van, when he has finally crawled up the drive on his hands and knees with exhaustion, say well done darling, I am just going back to give the old house the once over, let me know when you are done. If he wants to nickel and dime, let him get on with it, just don't enslave yourself to his tightness.

Or............. you could tell him to get a F'ing grip

I know which I would choose.

That quote is really really cheap. It is definitely worth it ... every penny.

Are you selling and buying? If so what happens when your van is full but you don't yet have access to the new house and have to leave yours ASAP? Removal men will have the right size van and it all becomes their stress.

They sometimes dismantle and reassemble- I think we paid extra for the bunk beds. But they don't take wardrobes apart just take them whole.

Make sure you factor into the quote thongs like insurance against delays - or the price can shoot up.

If you want to pack yourselves you need to rake a week off work....how much will that cost in your time?
