What do I expect from a kitchen fitter /how much help

I need a hand hold through the process, today someone came around and I get the feeling they can do whatever but didn't give much of a handhold, so I'm not good at measuring etc what should I be looking for!
. We need our floor leveling, walls plastered and a fake ceiling removed, electric checked then a new kitchen installed.

If they are doing all the work, then they should be doing all the measuring.

Where are you buying the kitchen units from - the fitters or another place? Normally they come out, do all the measuring up and then plan it around the measurements, with input from you about what you would like and where.

We did nothing. Carpenter got kitchen design in, they designed. Carpenter fitted. Arranged electrician and plumber and plasterer.
Said when and who we needs to get in for flooring.

I bloody loved our carpenter

Our fitter did everything, knocked down walls, moved doors, did the electrics, flooring, plumbing in of sink and appliances, arranged gas work, the lot. Just a word of mouth recommendation but worth his weight in gold.
We did nothing but keep out of the way.

The kitchen designer will measure and draw possible plans for you. A good fitter/builder will do the actual work and get other people in as needed. Ask around locally for a recommendation.

Before you speak to a fitter, you need to order a kitchen! Speak to a supplier - they may fit as well. They should be able to measure up and plan it. Most use computer programs to do it all, much easier!

The kitchen designer designs and supplies the kitchen. The fitter fits it. The electrician does the electrics. The plumber does the plumbing. The plasterer does the plastering. The builder does the building. I’m not sure why you think one person can or should do all of this? Usually the designer/supplier will book the other trades for you as needed.

@Lemonmelonsun it is not a strange response - it is exactly what most people do when getting a new kitchen.

It’s not a strange response. If one person tells you they can do everything they’re either lying or will do a shit job. Every one of those trades is a specialist with specific qualifications and nobody can do them all. Kitchen fitters don’t design or manufacture the kitchen that they fit, and they certainly don’t do plastering or electrics. They may hire other trades to come in and do their parts. If this person is claiming they can do the whole job themselves, run like the wind and go to a proper kitchen supplier!

Well the question in the title and the thread is about what do I expect of a fitter!
So I'm not assuming or presuming anything! This is the exactly what I'm asking! Because it don't know what!

It depends who this person is. Is he a fitter who intends to fit the kitchen with his own hands? Or a kitchen supplier who will design and source the units then hire a fitter and other trades as needed?

And you shouldn’t be doing your own measuring. The person selling you the kitchen should measure and sell you a kitchen that fits.

Company came and measured up. Fitter checked the measurements and suggested a couple of changes. That's all.

Most kitchen fitters charge by the number of units rather than a day rate. You want to know what they'll charge for the job imo. It'll cost more if they have to put flat pack units together. Is the person you've spoken to a kitchen fitter or does he run a business which designs, supplies and fits the kitchen? If it's the latter he'll be the boss doing the design and ordering and he'll probably have a team to do the actual fit out work. Beware electrics done by non-qualified electricians - they'll do all sorts to make the job easier for them without necessarily taking the regs into account. I.e. the electrics could be wrong and potentially dangerous.

Even kitchen fitters sometimes get someone specialist in to fit worktops, all kinds of worktops, because it's a skilled job whatever the material.

My dh is a carpenter, fits kitchens sometimes. He would do all the measurements, get a designer in to do the kitchen design with you, he will fit and organise all other workmen needed. He charges £200 a day, sometimes with a big job he will charge be job and not day rate.

Expect labour to be between £200-£300 a day depending on where in the country you are.

If you have literally no idea what you’re doing you need a general builder. They’ll organise all the work, not necessarily do it all themselves.

Have you chosen a kitchen yet?

We designed ours using the tool on the Ikea website. We then wanted quotes to fit it. Our friend does kitchen and bathroom fitting for a living and is great but was booked up. Quote we got was 2k, DH taught himself, he is exceptionally good at DIY. Friend said it was as good as a professional job. We paid a couple of hundred for a tiler who we had a recommendation for and our mate fitted the hob, he is a registered fitter. We did pay for the ceiling to be replaced and to have the boiler relocated before this. That was 4K.

We are getting our kitchen done by a company who do it all for you including supplying the kitchen, they do all measurements, design the kitchen to your requirements and fit it including the building work, electrics and plumbing. If you are doing part of the process yourself such as sourcing your own kitchen you will need to do more.

To be honest unless you are very good at DIY like a pp DH I would try to get a fitter who does more of the work for you.

Then you need to get in touch with a kitchen supplier. They may also fit it or recommend a fitter, but they will come and measure it out and plan it with you.
I think your main issue with this thread is you are confusing a kitchen fitter with a kitchen supplier/manufacturer.

Some general builders will fit a kitchen and have preferred suppliers for you to work with. They will also have plumbers and electricians that they recommend/use.
