Is anyone else getting worried about school bubbles closing just before the summer holidays?

I found out this morning that four ( four!) year groups are currently isolating at our village school. Not the school either of my kids attend, but they go to clubs and socialise with these kids and our schools are only just down the road. I’m tempted to avoid Guides, swimming, golf etc for a couple of weeks.

While a closed bubble ( or worse, a positive test) in the next couple of weeks would be hugely inconvenient for work and life, the idea of having to sit at home for 10 days when we could be on holiday ( 16th July, only camping in Norfolk, but I can’t wait), even if they test negative, would be a bit heartbreaking. We’ve luckily dodged any self isolation so far and I feel like the fates are holding off for the big one....

Is this exercising anyone else at the moment, or am I a bit paranoid?

I am a bit. We are going away the day after term ends. Just keeping my fingers crossed!

ssd · 22/06/2021 09:04

When does term end

Labradabradorable · 22/06/2021 09:05

Me too! DH has decided not to catch the train to his office in London for the rest of term. He’d been going in once a week, mostly to gee up some of the younger folk, who are struggling a bit.

16th July here, so only 4 weeks.

I don’t think our village school is likely to have reopened by then. So sad for those kids.

@ssd

When does term end
22nd July for us so still almost 5 weeks left!
ssd · 22/06/2021 09:16

Fingers crossed it will be ok. I think school hols start next week here in Scotland

theneverendinglaundry · 22/06/2021 09:20

I hadn't really thought about it until I read this thread, but with the numbers going up it could happen. My eldest is going on a residential a week before term ends, the whole of her year are in a bubble (3 classes) so it's highly likely it will burst in the next 5 weeks!

TriangularPrism · 22/06/2021 09:26

Well I wasn't but now I am Grin

Wishing I'd thought about this and planned our trip away for 10 days into the holidays. Bugger. Just have to keep everything crossed and will avoid anything extra curricular in the lead up to the holidays

EversoDelighted · 22/06/2021 09:31

Yes, we are going away a week after the DCs break up and I am concerned, wish we'd left it another week but there was far less availability. I am going to be super careful about distancing at work for the last ten days too.

Ohmygoshandfolly · 22/06/2021 09:33

Yes, I had this thought last week. There was a positive case in DD’s class but only close contacts go home now so people the child sits near or plays with so my DD is still at school. It then made me worry about losing 10 days in the summer holidays to self isolation. I worried before Christmas too.

Labradabradorable · 22/06/2021 09:37

Sorry to the people I’ve worried! It only occurred to me at 3am this morning. I wish we’d held off and booked a later holiday date too. I’m being careful at work. I had a few school visits planned, which I’m shifting to my clinic. Schools are where it’s all going down, I reckon!

Yes i am.
Our la have asked everyone to get a pcr test aged 12-30 now.
There is a bit of a climb in our numbers.
We have about 8 positive cases in dc school so far.
Thankfully none in either my dds classes, but with the more tests been done I think it’s only a matter of time.
Both my dds are going for pcr tests tonight

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/06/2021 09:39

We booked our trip away (local caravan park!) for 14 days after school ends just in case their bubble bursts in that last week.

thelittlestrhino · 22/06/2021 09:42

Yes, it's been happening here (Scotland, so last school day is tomorrow). Lots of local schools shut or with year groups out.

Attendance this week is even worse than usual too! And it doesn't help that there's a stomach bug doing the rounds...

BogRollBOGOF · 22/06/2021 09:55

We have a week between school finishing and going away... if the government lets us go as the current restrictions imposed since booking are too impractical. Relative is very frail. If the conditions attached to quarentine don't change in time, I'm not going to confidently state that we'll ever see this relative again, because any infection has the potential to be overwhelming at this state of age/ health.

I hope I'm being pessamistic with this.

Other than worries about our right to a family life and mortality, I think that the end of term (and testing) will bring about the end of this peak if it hasn't already fizzled in the next few weeks anyway. With the vaccines rapidly supressing easy transmission, the virus should easily go through the most avaliable hosts quite quickly and hopefully before the end of term.

rookiemere · 22/06/2021 09:59

Already an issue in Scotland. Seems like majority of DS class have decided not to come in this week in addition to those identified for self isolation.

Am dreading getting the email through and a new worry is what happens if we get it when already at destination- we're traveling on Friday. It's UK though at least.

NebulaStorm · 22/06/2021 09:59

Yep. Isolating at the moment until next week. Term finishes in 2 weeks 4 days and we go the day after. I'm really worried.

Labradabradorable · 22/06/2021 10:06

rookiemere- oh gosh, I hadn't even thought of that! We plan to get in the car straight from the school run to drive to our holiday spot. It's in the middle of nowhere, so we won't be checking emails etc for a few days (deliberately, as I like to be disconnected on holiday). I guess a text might get through.

I’m really worried too, we go away the day term ends 23rd July and I’m so looking forward to it, I’m really worried the bubbles will burst and we’ll need to isolate and miss it. 😳rates are really high where we live and social distancing is non existent. I’m ready for this to end but I’m nervous about my holidays being disrupted. It’s a week in the Lake District and I can’t wait to get away. Fingers crossed nursery and school stays open.

1happyhippie · 22/06/2021 10:14

A few of the parents at dds school are planning to keep the children home for the last week if they have holidays planned at the start of the summer holidays.
I know a couple did this before Christmas too.
It is a worry as to know what to do for the best

FourTeaFallOut · 22/06/2021 10:19

Bit nervous here. We start our holiday the day after the school term finishes, taking advantage of the earlier closing date of the 15th. Seemed like a good plan in February.

Clarabellawilliamson · 22/06/2021 10:59

Yep- it suddenly dawned on me that it might happen. DD breaks up on the 28th, we are going on the 30th.

Might the potential relaxing of restrictions in July (if it happens) mean and end to bubbles bursting?!

CatFaceCats · 22/06/2021 11:08

Scotland here - was dithering about sending my kids for the last week (this week!) but then my son was identified as a close contact for someone last week, I found out on Sunday. So now we’re all just isolating. Seems to be rapidly spreading through their school!

GalesThisMorning · 22/06/2021 11:11

Argh. I am now. One more thing to try and factor in
