So a 96yr old man has a heart attack. Most mornings he has bacon/eggs etc fried in oil. Would your position be to cut down on the oily foods because they aren't very healthy for anyone at that rate let alone a near centenarian but would your view be well you're 96 so if you fancy also breaking out a crack-pipe have at it!!!

Just curious as I'm not sure where I stand on this and I do have a stake in this particular battle.

If he has got to 96 eating that, it shows how healthy it is for him!

Seriously, just let him enjoy his usual breakfast.

ShirleyDab · 21/06/2021 21:51

Depriving him of his little pleasures will kill him quicker than his bacon and eggs.
If he has mental capacity why does anyone think they're
entitled to stop him eating what he enjoys? Leave him be.

I knew someone many years ago who’s little brother was dying of cancer, he was 11, he said he wanted to try a pint of beer and a cigar before he died, so they let him.

I don’t think he got very far with the cigar but it was what he wanted as he knew he wasn’t ever going to get to grow up and it certainly couldn’t make anything any worse. Poor little lamb.

It’s probably the oil that’s got him to that ripe old age!

Another one for crack pipe

Just10moreminutesplease · 21/06/2021 21:53

At 96 he’s more than old enough to choose his own breakfast.

mum2jakie · 21/06/2021 21:53

Pretty sure there was some research that said a fried breakfast was healthier than a carb based version? Crack on I'd say!

FreekStar · 21/06/2021 21:55

Well. if he's got to 96 living on fried breakfasts then I'd take the view that fried breakfasts can't be that'd for you after all!

TheLeadbetterLife · 21/06/2021 21:55

The idea that saturated fat is bad for the heart is probably bad science. In any case, even if it weren't, I doubt cutting it out at 96 would make a blind bit of difference.

ChocolateRiver · 21/06/2021 21:56

Let him crack on.

oakleaffy · 21/06/2021 21:56

I knew somebody who when terminally ill used opium.
They were dying anyway, and they absolutely LOVED smoking opium {They lived in a Country where it was available}
He died far too young, but I respected his wishes to use a very warming, floating, soothing drug.
He preferred opium to the morphine that was supplied.

Fried bacon with a 90 yr old? Jeez...let him make his own choices.

That is so sad. It is cruel when children get ill. Ninety year olds can do what the hell they like!
DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 21/06/2021 22:01

Ffs

Crack on and add a sausage imho. He's done alright on his diet, given he's made 96

ASchuylerSister · 21/06/2021 22:03

Team crack pipe here

godmum56 · 21/06/2021 22:03

why on earth are you unsure? is there ANYBODY in the known universe who would take his bacon away?

Emmelina · 21/06/2021 22:05

He’s made it to 96 on that diet, let him have his bacon and eggs. And his crackpipe if he so wishes!

userchange8945 · 21/06/2021 22:06

My Granny who was the healthiest most proper woman I have ever known in my life, who literally restricted herself to two squares of chocolate a day, started to eat her pudding before her main meal when she had to go into a nursing home. I was immensely proud and supportive of her rebellion, might have looked small on the outside, but it was a big "fuck you" to doing things proper from her Smile

Team crack pipe.

Crack pipe. I'm sure even I'd want to try that at 96! 😂
BackforGood · 21/06/2021 22:08

Like the overwhelming majority, I can't believe anyone is trying to deprive a 96 year old of having food they enjoy.
If it hasn't killed him by 96 then it really isn't going to. Old age will, at some point, but what's the point in living a few months longer than you might if those months are joyless ? Confused

EveningOverRooftops · 21/06/2021 22:09

Let him crack on with his lifestyle but seriously talk about a DNR should it happen again.

It’s about quality of life not quantity.

DishingOutDone · 21/06/2021 22:14

So there you have it OP, a unanimous bacon/crack pipe combo.

You don't sound convinced; what's the back story/point you were driving at?

Ohhhthepain · 21/06/2021 22:15

There’s joy in food. I’ve recently lost a loved one of a slightly older age, the last year robbed her of her appetite which was so sad.

Team crackpipe!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/06/2021 22:15

At that age, IMO someone can eat what the hell they like.

I had to have a Word with one of the staff at my mother’s care home, who was bossily telling my DM - over 90 with dementia - that she should be having brown bread sandwiches instead of white - when both were offered. If you can’t eat what the hell you like at over 90, FGS….

She was the only staff member I never took to - all the others were lovely, but that one was in the wrong job.
