So a 96yr old man has a heart attack. Most mornings he has bacon/eggs etc fried in oil. Would your position be to cut down on the oily foods because they aren't very healthy for anyone at that rate let alone a near centenarian but would your view be well you're 96 so if you fancy also breaking out a crack-pipe have at it!!!

Just curious as I'm not sure where I stand on this and I do have a stake in this particular battle.

Let him eat what he wants why live your final years miserable just to drag it out a bit.

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/06/2021 20:52

Let him eat it.

When my DF was in hospital and dying of cancer he asked for chocolate. He wasn't supposed to have "normal " chocolate because he had diabetes. We mentioned his request to the doctor who said that if that was what my DF wanted then that's what he should have. It wasn't going to make any difference to his condition and would make him happy.

Team crackpipe all the way. 96 is a grand old age so he's been doing something right hasn't he!

My Nan is 93 diagnosed with lung cancer. Life long smoker. No point her giving up the fags now, she can only have palliative treatment

Crowsaregreat · 21/06/2021 20:54

If you're not old enough to decide for yourself at that age, when are you old enough? Unless cutting it out would give him comfort, thinking a heart attack could happen again is scary.

tiredanddangerous · 21/06/2021 20:55

Crack pipe all the way.

Vallmo47 · 21/06/2021 20:55

I understand entirely 💗 but I’d 100% let him make his own risk assessment. If it was me and I’d got to that age and wanted some bacon I’d absolutely not let anyone tell me otherwise. 😆 Also- you don’t want to sour your last months/years with him talking about this boring stuff.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/06/2021 20:55

team crack pipe
and drugs, booze and rock & roll

MrsOwly · 21/06/2021 20:56

If I get to 96 I'll be having a lovely bottle of red a night to wash down a lamb bhuna with onion bhajis.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/06/2021 20:56

I'd light his cigarette if he wants it.

Littleroundsponge · 21/06/2021 20:57

I'd just let him carry on as he is. He's 96, he may as well spend however many years left he may have eating the things he enjoys.

Benjispruce3 · 21/06/2021 20:57

His diet has got him to 96. Let him carry on. Rather lose a year and enjoy my last years than gain an extra miserable year.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/06/2021 20:58

Let him have what he wants .

VladmirsPoutine · 21/06/2021 20:58

Grin at team crack-pipe! I just really don't know what to make of it. I've always said that if I make it that long I would try psychedelics but then again it's difficult knowing the bacon/oil isn't good for his heart.

My great aunt somehow got to 94 on 40 fags a day, and a diet of mince and haggis.

Only brandy on a Saturday though! So she considered herself fairly healthy.

Echobelly · 21/06/2021 21:00

Yeah, I'd say he can eat what he wants at 96!

It's reminds me of when DH's grandpa, nearly 100, was in the old folks' home, and DH's aunt who lived nearest her father was the one who did most of the visiting and helping and complained he seemed to be spending a lot of money he was asking her for. DH and I agreed that frankly he was free to spend it on gin and hookers if he wanted - he was having a miserable time generally.

NoddingTulip · 21/06/2021 21:00

Team crackpipe! As far as I'm concerned at 96 they could have whatever they damn well like. Whether thats a fry up and pint of Lager for breakfast, skydiving, or skinny dipping in the lake, id want them to enjoy whatever time they had left.

Deadleaf29 · 21/06/2021 21:00

What’s all this “let him” as though he’s a toddler wanting sweeties? He’s an adult. The fact he’s elderly doesn’t suddenly make him a child. Entirely up to him what he eats. Unless he’s got severe dementia and is being unknowingly/unwillingly spoon fed the eggs by a carer, just leave him alone.

If I get that far I’ll be eating whatever I like, healthy or not.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 21/06/2021 21:02

Im on the side of team crack pipe.

dancingindungarees · 21/06/2021 21:02

I'd follow with a champagne chaser and a twenty deck of ciggies if I got to that age (miss smoking Blush).

Hellocatshome · 21/06/2021 21:02

At 96 he can do what he wants. When my DGrandma hit 80 she said she was going to do whatever she wanted and she had a glass of sherry every night instead of just a Friday, she had a Kit Kat everyday and had an ice cream from the ice cream van on her Sunday walks in the park. She lived to 93.

Earfling · 21/06/2021 21:02

He can make his own decision, surely?

Ensure he has the information he needs to on healthier oils for frying.

Is an Air Fryer an option?

Heart failure is not a nice way to die, it's not always a quick heart attack so I would try to meet in the middle for everyone's sake.

swampytiggaa · 21/06/2021 21:02

My mom sometimes fusses about things not being good for her. I say that at 92 does it really matter?

SIL’s mom lived to mid 90’s and the last few years she mainly ate cake and mini eggs #lifegoals

Iliketeaagain · 21/06/2021 21:02

Honestly, he should do whatever he likes at 96, if he wants to have fried breakfast, lunch and dinner, then quite frankly, he should.

I've always said if I got to 90, I'd be in a chair, cigarettes on one side, gin on the other and cake and sweet treats to line my stomach so I don't get sick drinking gin on an empty tummy.

96 is a grand age. Why should / would anyone want to live out their last few years eating healthy food if they don't want to.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 21/06/2021 21:04

Hang on.
Are we talking bacon or magic mushrooms now?

Your second post is confusing?

Either way, I say bacon, crack, mushrooms and scantily clad women (or men) and have fun!
