So a 96yr old man has a heart attack. Most mornings he has bacon/eggs etc fried in oil. Would your position be to cut down on the oily foods because they aren't very healthy for anyone at that rate let alone a near centenarian but would your view be well you're 96 so if you fancy also breaking out a crack-pipe have at it!!!

Just curious as I'm not sure where I stand on this and I do have a stake in this particular battle.

Deep fried crack pipe.

@HelloDulling

I’m Team Bacon, Team Crack Pipe, Team Double Scotch and Team Dancing Girls.
Me too Grin

I'd maybe cook with a light misting of spray oil in the pan instead as a compromise. Tastes just as good IMO.

My Nan is just turning 96. I’d provide anything she wanted Grin blessed to have had her here for so long.

If she wanted magic mushrooms with her fried breakfast I’d be out there picking them. Damn Covid, I miss her (care home)

ARealTrip · 21/06/2021 23:37

#teamcrackpipe all the way. Marge time for him to alter his diet for health was a few decades ago and some.

A doctor once told me they would rather die if a heart attack In Their sleep in old age with no prolonged disability.

Let him have his enjoyment and he’s hoping when his time comes it will be swift. He’s done well to survive a heart attack. Also sugar is the evil in your diet not necessarily the fat.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 21/06/2021 23:38

(Can you fry magic mushrooms? Afraid I’ve reached 40 with a substantial knowledge gap 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Zzelda · 21/06/2021 23:41

Definitely pro bacon and eggs all the way, though I guess he wouldn't notice if you grilled the bacon rather than fried it.

I speak from experience. My grandmother has always put liberal amounts of salt into all her cooking and onto her food, including slightly bizarre practices such as putting it on bread and peanut butter. She had a stroke but still insists on her salt, and as she was 85 when she had the stroke my mother and the rest of the family took the view that we weren't going to spoil whatever time she had left by making her eat healthily and, in her view, without being able to taste anything. 10 years later she is still going strong, and in fact sailed through covid a few months ago, and we still have no plans to take the salt away.

EscapeToTheMountains · 21/06/2021 23:47

Gosh, I'd eat what I wanted, no matter my age, but definitely in my mid-90s! At that age, the inevitable is inching closer every day, anyway, so I'd want to enjoy myself while I could.

If he's aware of the risks and wants the fried food, I wouldn't argue.

WheresMyAlex · 21/06/2021 23:51

If I make it to 90, I’m taking up smoking again. Gave up for health, but miss it everyday.
So yes, I’m team crack pipe!

Taliskerskye · 21/06/2021 23:54

As soon as I hit 90
I’m on it all. Crack. Booze. Fat.
Doubt I’ll make it that long.
Can you imagine the old folk on MDMA

Taliskerskye · 21/06/2021 23:55

But in all seriousness
My old parent doesn’t want to do any of the above. Doesn’t even really want to eat,

As they say. It’s wasted on the young. Sad really

jabbyjabjab · 21/06/2021 23:56

Anyone who has made it to 96 has clearly found the magic combination of what works for them. Team Crack-pipe for the win.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 21/06/2021 23:57

Chips, wine and cigarettes are going to be my 90th birthday present if, by a miracle, I get there.

Thekormachameleon · 22/06/2021 00:09

My aunt is dying of cancer, she has only a few weeks left.
After losing her only child and then her husband in under 12 months, her only comfort is her ciggies and brandy

Dr told her this week to stop smoking 🙄🙄 the time for that has long passed so I took her 100 fags and a bottle of brandy so She can live her last days out in peace

Team Crackpipe. My mum said, after a series of serious heart attacks, the cardiologist talked to her about smoking. They agreed that you can give up all the things you enjoy because they're unhealthy, but having done so where's the fun? So she carried on smoking and lived another 20+ years.

SenseOfDuty · 22/06/2021 00:15

In the eyes of the law, you must presume competence. People are allowed to make unwise decisions as long as they have capacity to do so. Questions only arise once there is doubt on either his ability to make a decision, or his ability to understand and retain pertinent information needed to make that decision...

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 22/06/2021 00:22

korma

I did similar with a relative. No regrets.

Team Crack pipe.

Muddydoor · 22/06/2021 02:05

Be careful with frying magic mushrooms. I remember a few years back some people in Australia picked and cooked some magic mushrooms that weren’t they found in their garden and almost died.

Ticklemycarpets · 22/06/2021 07:03

Crack on with the crack pipe

bigbaggyeyes · 22/06/2021 07:09

My dad always said that he was too scared to ever take drugs, so if he's ever diagnosed with a terminal illness, he said the first thing he'd do is try all the drugs he could.

ChaToilLeam · 22/06/2021 07:10

Crack pipe, unless Mr 96 wants it otherwise.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 22/06/2021 07:11

#TeamCrackPipe here too. I'd be frying my Weetabix too if I got to that age.

Congressdingo · 22/06/2021 07:22

@HandforthParishCouncilClerk

Streaky bacon baked in the oven on a baking tray is the BEST bacon so I’d say switch from frying it in oil for that reason alone, but other than that, at 96 you earn the right to eat as you damn well please!
Asking for a wannabe 96 year old, how long in the oven at what temperature? For crispy bacon, not that limp chewy stuff. Tia
OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 22/06/2021 07:46

Team crackpipe too. When my gran was 91 a doctor told her that she was showing signs of liver or kidney or both problems and should stop drinking. A nurse who saw her next told her to carry on as she'd got to 91 and organ issues at her age were pretty normal. She lived to 97 enjoying her nightly Sherry. No one is convinced that stopping that would have prolonged her life too much.

DaisyDreaming · 22/06/2021 08:35

Let him enjoy his fry up!
