So a 96yr old man has a heart attack. Most mornings he has bacon/eggs etc fried in oil. Would your position be to cut down on the oily foods because they aren't very healthy for anyone at that rate let alone a near centenarian but would your view be well you're 96 so if you fancy also breaking out a crack-pipe have at it!!!

Just curious as I'm not sure where I stand on this and I do have a stake in this particular battle.

Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, with a side order of bacon. Hell, he's earned it.

Seriously though, don't start coming at him all nanny state. Cook him the b&e, he won't live any longer, it will just seem like it to him if he can't have his small pleasures.

DramaAlpaca · 21/06/2021 21:27

Whatever he likes at that age.

randomkey123 · 21/06/2021 21:27

When my Nan's heart started failing, she completely lost her appetite due to medication. A good meal for her was a slice of buttered white bread with 2 or 3 salted crisps in. Or a fruit trifle.

We didn't care what she ate as long as she ate something.

At 96 it's Quality of life over quantity.

RosaLuxemburgwasright · 21/06/2021 21:28

Crack pipe for the win!

Toebean · 21/06/2021 21:28

At 96 he should do whatever he wants and enjoy

OffRampHilton · 21/06/2021 21:30

Reminds me of my grandmother who gave up smoking at the age of 93 (having started 85 years beforehand!) because she heard it can shorten your life expectancy!

me4real · 21/06/2021 21:30

A doctor would have to say cut down the unhealthy stuff. But it's the bloke's choice at the end of the day.

Bacon is ok grilled so he could make changes like that, a healthier spread etc.

Or he could overhaul his diet. After all, he could have another 25 years of life or more in theory. Smile

I have worked in cardiac rehab and I don't think someone would be told to give up prawns for cardiac issues. Unless maybe they also have kidney problems and need to watch the amount of phosphate in their diet. Frozen prawns can have added phosphate.

Sittingonabench · 21/06/2021 21:30

At 96 anything that gives him joy should be accessible to him. At 96 he’s clearly doing something that works, I wouldn’t mess with a winning formula.

DansMaPoche · 21/06/2021 21:30

Well if he's lasted until 96 before having a heart attack and still survived it then I'd say his daily bacon and eggs fried in oil aren't doing him too much harm at all.

YellowFish12 · 21/06/2021 21:31

At 96? Eat what he wants!

Mischance · 21/06/2021 21:31

Bacon and eggs are obviously associated with longevity - let him enjoy!!

I can remember my OH (a doctor) saying to my 90 year old grandmother that she would never make old bones if she ate the fat on her ham - she found it very amusing!!!

HugeBowlofChips · 21/06/2021 21:32

I am not sure about the crack pipe suggesions. Maybe a nice colourful bong? They come in a range of sizes and designs to suit all tastes.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 21/06/2021 21:32

At 96 he's on 'borrowed time' as my grandad used to say and he should live every day to the full exactly as he wants because each one is an unexpected bonus.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 21/06/2021 21:32

My gran lived til she was 98.If she'd have asked for 8 big macs with 8 portions of fries id have bought her it.

Hallyup6 · 21/06/2021 21:33

Whatever the heck he enjoys at that age. No point in spending your last few years being miserable.

Agsjsgkahs · 21/06/2021 21:33

ICU nurse here and controversially I don’t think lifestyle changes will make a scrap of difference at 96, let him enjoy his life

PawsQueen · 21/06/2021 21:33

I used to care for a 97yo woman who seemed to survive off cake, chocolate and sweets. Given she still had all her own teeth and not one filling, we figured best she carry on Grin

Purplewithred · 21/06/2021 21:33

Average age of suffering a first heart attack is 64 in men. I would conclude that his diet may have a protective element for him and that he should eat more of it.

FGS give the man whatever he wants.

(As it happens I had B&E for supper and they were delicious, and have also picked 85 as my 'right that's it, I'm doing what I want from now on' age).

Georgie8 · 21/06/2021 21:33

Agree with LemonRoses.
Usually the older you get the smaller your universe becomes and food and drink becomes really important.
My parents are in their late eighties and my mother was recently told she was borderline diabetic. She said she’d try and reverse this via her diet (which is very good, but her knees are knackered so she is pretty immobile) and the GP said to take the medicine -you deserve to enjoy a bit of cheese and wine in your twilight years 😋

SpeckledyHen · 21/06/2021 21:34

Another member of team crack-pipe here . I hope my kids buy me one when I get to 96.

drpet49 · 21/06/2021 21:35

He is 96- he can eat whatever he likes. I wouldn’t stand in his way.

OrangeSharked · 21/06/2021 21:35

Tbh Id say if he made it to 96 without the heart attack its tantamount to the health of the bacon and eggs! I'm not sure exactly what benefit there is at 96 to changing his diet

Some people might rather give up the bacon and eggs and try and live longer. Others may think fuck it. Its personal preference and he's chosen to est the bacon and eggs. Personally, at 96, I'm reaching for the crack pipe but each to their own

bullyingadvice2017 · 21/06/2021 21:35

If he's 96 and managing to eat bacon then let him crack on.

My family get on at my little old nana about smoking. Giving up is going to take away the only thing she enjoys. It has no benefit to her at all at her stage in life.
I take her 200 fags every week and check daily she has enough in.
Still can't admit to her that I understand nana coz I love a fag too! 🤣

pontiouspilates · 21/06/2021 21:36

Definitely Team Crack Pipe
