So a 96yr old man has a heart attack. Most mornings he has bacon/eggs etc fried in oil. Would your position be to cut down on the oily foods because they aren't very healthy for anyone at that rate let alone a near centenarian but would your view be well you're 96 so if you fancy also breaking out a crack-pipe have at it!!!

Just curious as I'm not sure where I stand on this and I do have a stake in this particular battle.

It’s not difficult, it’s his choice surely, why are you questioning it?

AntiWorkBrigade · 21/06/2021 21:04

If you get to that age and can still enjoy food, I think you’re winning. My grandma died around that age and, while she’d been in otherwise good health almost until the end, I’d never known her to be able to eat properly due to digestive problems. It got progressively worse until she was down to eating stuff like boiled onions in her final years. Pretty common, I think.

‘Nice crack pipe’ has made me smile!

ArabellaScott · 21/06/2021 21:05

Crack pipe. Don't take away his pleasure.

Team Fair Trade crack pipe.

He's 96. He's got to die of something. I reckon of I get that old I'd prefer to eat all my favourite things than squeeze out every last second of life living on muesli and oat cakes.

LemonRoses · 21/06/2021 21:07

It’s his choice entirely.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 21/06/2021 21:07

Well, I'd probably think to myself that the bacon and eggs aren't helping, but I'd tell them that they'll probably live to over 100. A middle ground might be to encourage them to grill the bacon or add tomatoes. At 96 though...they've done pretty well!

Tuberoses · 21/06/2021 21:08

Saturated fat is not linked to heart disease. It would probably be healthier to fry the bacon in butter rather than oil.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/06/2021 21:08

I would continue with the breakfasts but discourage him from buying an E-scooter.

UhtredRagnarson · 21/06/2021 21:09

We all have to die of something. At 96 that something is going to happen pretty soon anyway. Would this man prefer something else to kill him?

IncessantNameChanger · 21/06/2021 21:09

Team.crack pipe too. I would rather be happy and go with a heart attack than live a unfulfilling life and slip into dementia and frailty. Sorry not helpful.

If he thinks he has another ten good years in him he might decide to lay off the bacon of his own will

3LittleDucksQuack · 21/06/2021 21:10

At 96 have whatever u wish!
My late GM passed away this year everyone nagged her about the sweet stuff she enjoyed. She had not much else as was pretty housebound. Me and my dm would say let her enjoy it. She's eaten that crap for 80 yrs can't make her change..
The naggers now regret nagging and that being all they did for the last few years is judge her food.

romdowa · 21/06/2021 21:10

He is 96 , is there really any point in him giving all this up now? Let him crack on and enjoy what ever time he has left.

Inthemuckheap · 21/06/2021 21:10

His life; his choice.

Team Crackpipe all the way!

Twinkie01 · 21/06/2021 21:11

Of course bacon and oil is good for his heart. It's lubricated it for the last 96 years.

BunnyRuddington · 21/06/2021 21:12

I think Cannabis might be a more gentle introduction to drugs, especially as he's had a recent heart attack. Maybe bake him some nice Brownies to have with his morning coffee?

UhtredRagnarson · 21/06/2021 21:12

Fwiw bacon makes my heart very happy Grin

FreezerBird · 21/06/2021 21:12

#teamcrackpipe

Not something I ever thought I'd write.

VladmirsPoutine · 21/06/2021 21:12

He's not able to cook for himself. So we do it for him. He can say what he wants but he couldn't physically get up and fry bacon.

To echo PPs, the guy has made it to 96. When you do the same (and he’s perhaps 150), then you can lecture him about his lifestyle and take away his bacon and eggs 😂

Aquamarine1029 · 21/06/2021 21:14

I can't believe that you would even consider regulating what a 96 year old eats. Honestly, that is just cruel and bizarre as fuck.

MegaClutterSlut · 21/06/2021 21:16

The man is 96, most people don't get to live to this age. Let him eat what he wants and enjoy whats left of his life imo

DeciduousPerennial · 21/06/2021 21:17

I’d give him unmelted lard and chocolate spread straight from the jar if that’s what he asked for at 96.

Comedycook · 21/06/2021 21:17

I reckon bacon and eggs is probably better for you than some fat free (yet loaded with sugar) breakfast cereal.

Anyway, I don't believe the accepted view that saturated far is bad for us.

CosmicComfort · 21/06/2021 21:18

He’s 96, let him at the bacon!

I think at some point we have to accept our days are numbered, I would just want to enjoy my final days if I got to 96, eating what I like and enjoying life as much as I can.

I would want the same for my parents or husband as well. He’s not harming anyone else and if he has capacity, it’s wrong to override his free choice.

Congressdingo · 21/06/2021 21:18

@PaniniHead

My Nan is 93 diagnosed with lung cancer. Life long smoker. No point her giving up the fags now, she can only have palliative treatment
I've known a few older people being told by their family to quit drinking/smoking/eating crap. I have been known to say at your age who the hell cares. There was a 99 year old woman who just wanted some cheese but her son wouldnt let her. Ffs at 99 she has earned some bloody cheese ( and a crack pipe) so I took her some cheese, it still took her a bit more than a year to die. Somehow I dont think the cheese hastened the end.
