Just for fun, American words for thing you love and hate

Mine are, I love "stroller" as opposed to our "pushchair" and "take out the trash" as opposed to our "take the rubbish out."

I don't like "pants" as "trousers" or "pantyhose" as opposed to "tights." Or "fanny" for "bottom".

What are yours?

OP posts:

I think Butt and Ass (Arse in the UK) are more widely-used words in the US for Bottom than Fanny. I like Butt more than Ass or Arse. Don't like Fanny.

I like Sweater, not Jumper.
Eraser, not Rubber.
I used to prefer Diapers to Nappies but I think I've changed now.
Same with Sneakers instead of Trainers.

Feather12 · 19/06/2021 18:18

Soda. I don’t even know what to say in the UK anymore.

PlasticOrchid · 19/06/2021 18:27

Bathroom. I'm a teacher, "I'm afraid we don't have a bathroom in school."

NotSureYet · 19/06/2021 18:28

Y'all. As opposed to "everyone" or "you all" or "guys". It's concise and gender neutral and very fun to say. I'm a Brit but grew up in the South and I will never relinquish the use of "y'all".

LoveFall · 19/06/2021 18:33

I like sidewalk instead of pavement, which seems very odd to me as a Canadian, because the road is made of pavement too.

Otherwise most British ways of saying things are just different.

My English-born DH had to work hard not to use "rubber" instead of "eraser" when teaching high school in Canada as it invariably meant titters from the students. A "rubber" is slang for condom!

Biancadelrioisback · 19/06/2021 18:37

Zucchini! Cilantro!

Love these

choosername1234 · 19/06/2021 18:43

@Feather12

Me too! Fizzy pop sounds too "Enid Blyton"

I love 'Y'all' especially with the southern drawl but I never say it. 'You guys' or 'Guys' is what I used to say.

Also used to say 'Guy' rather than Man. Eg: "That guy over there".

Not sure I like Buddy or Pal for Friend, unless used when angry. Eg: "Listen Pal!..."

imaginethemdragons · 19/06/2021 18:47

AWSOME….fucking hate AWSOME.

Also “how are you today?”.

Love “y’all” though!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/06/2021 18:52

what do you mean by American?
do you mean the North & South America?

or is this a classic ignorant seppo thing of thinking the USA is the whole of America?!
because then here's mine: using the word "American" when you mean "in/from/of USA".

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/06/2021 18:52

I once read a novel (evidently hopelessly edited from the American edition) which included the line, ‘He patted her fanny as he went past.’ 😂

otterbaby · 19/06/2021 18:59

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba people from the USA are called American though? If you're from Honduras, in Central America, you're Honduran. Similarly, people from Brazil are Brazilian and people from Chile are Chilean. Technically South American but they are typically characterised by their individual countries. How else would you describe people from the USA?

FiveGs · 19/06/2021 19:02

I like cookies as a catch all for biscuits, line instead of queue and brats for sausages.

Not quite the same, but I dislike the American habit of referring to somebody as she/he in conversation - use my name! It comes over as rude otherwise. Also dislike the widespread use of 'off of'. I've trained DH away from the former and he only occasionally lets slip the latter Smile

Ireallydontknowimtired · 19/06/2021 19:11

Don't like 'Candy' for 'Sweets'.

Oh and ‘ All Y’all’ when talking to a group. Or maybe that’s just Texas.
Maggiesfarm · 19/06/2021 19:26

I like 'arraignment'. Hope I've spelt it right (or even spelled).

TSSDNCOP · 19/06/2021 19:28

I think it was perfectly clear what the OP meant.

I like dufus.

I also like measuring things in cups.

Maggiesfarm · 19/06/2021 19:41

I like dufus too (don't know what it means, will google).

PattyPan · 19/06/2021 19:42

My DP keeps saying nightstand for bedside table and it drives me nuts. He also keeps saying nooz instead of news. He is not American!

@otterbaby in German you say US-American

otterbaby · 19/06/2021 19:48

@PattyPan interesting, I hadn't heard that before! Thanks.

burritofan · 19/06/2021 19:55

Can’t bear cookies, movie, take out.

I work in fashion so I’m inured to sweaters and sneakers. And mom jeans.

TSSDNCOP · 19/06/2021 19:55

Warming to the theme I also like FUBAR and use it frequently

Ireallydontknowimtired · 19/06/2021 20:05

Like 'apartment' instead of 'flat'.
'Expressway/Highway' instead of 'motorway'.

antidisestablishmentarianism · 19/06/2021 20:07

I think arugela is a great word and better than rocket

Feather12 · 19/06/2021 20:08

The OP asked about American words, You know American English instead of British English, so it makes perfect sense. If she wanted to ask about South American words she would have probably asked for Spanish or Portuguese or Nahuatl translations etc. Your clever post isn’t quite as clever as you thought.
