Any South African Mumsnetters around?

I’m really sorry, this is going to be the strangest request ever. Basically I’m South African but living in the UK, pregnant and massively craving NikNaks. (For anyone reading this in passing, they bear no relation to the UK product of the same name and are a glorious festival of E-numbers and artificial cheese dust thatstays on your fingers forever.) Anyway, because they share a name with a UK product their commercial import here was banned a few years ago.

I’m very pregnant. I want nothing but NikNaks. I wake up thinking of them, go to sleep thinking of them etc etc. I have searched the entire internet. If it weren’t for the small matter of a global pandemic I’d be flying to Johannesburg tomorrow with an empty suitcase.

If you’re reading this from SA, or know anyone there, could you please buy some for me and post them over? I’ll pay you for them, postage and your time in advance. Help!

(I'll add, for fullness, that the UK ban covers trading or selling SA Niknaks in the UK, not care packages, and of course I've no intention of selling the things.)

Leads/commiserations also gratefully received Grin.

I have to say that at the current postal service rate, they'll probably arrive after your baby is born if you're now very pregnant! (Sorry not in SA so can't help).

zaffa · 17/06/2021 19:55

From SA but also in UK - I feel your pain! I desperately wanted bubbles during mine and you can't get them anywhere here!

isthismylifenow · 17/06/2021 19:58

I'm in SA 😃

And Niknaks are my fave too. They brought out a chutney flavour as well, just so wrong.

I will happily get some for you but I have no clue about the best way to get them to you. My mum (in UK) sent a tiny package over via DHL, and it cost 65 pounds!

They will be stale by the time you get them if I had to post them.

Aren't you able to buy them from the SA shop?

I was going to suggest the SA shop too.
I'm not South African but they also sell some of favourite Australiancrap goodiesGrin
Erm, I'm also not Australian.

isthismylifenow · 17/06/2021 20:03

Oops ignore that about the SA shop as I see you said they don't bring them in.

I'll happily trade you for beef oxo cubes. Grin Our UK emporium aren't allowed to bring them in.

Timmytoo · 17/06/2021 20:05

Hi 👋 I'm South African and in South Africa. Will gladly send whatever is needed. When i was in the UK we had a SA shop which sold ghost pops etc but was super expensive. We have a local shop which sells the small NikNaks for R1. What about wotsits?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/06/2021 20:05

There’s a SA shop in Paddington station (there was a shop in Victoria too - not sure if it’s still there) and they sell goodies.

scully29 · 17/06/2021 20:06

I lived in SA, I got chakalaka delivered by amazon when we got back, im sure you can get anything these days?

scully29 · 17/06/2021 20:07

Maybe not debonairs

I see they don't sell Niknaks. Only Cheasnaks and they are not the same at all.

Just as an aside I'm surprised to see Ghost Pops on there. We had a real shortage during our first lockdown. But the price. 😳 Omg

idontlikealdi · 17/06/2021 20:14

There used to be a SA ship at London Bridge station and I'm fairly sure they were online too.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/06/2021 20:15

Savannah? They have an online store but no NikNaks!!

MaverickDanger · 17/06/2021 20:15

We’re lucky that we have a SA shop in our town that sells most things (and ships U.K. nationwide) but I would kill for a couple of bags of Speckled Eggs.

Do they have Niknaks for OP?
Timmytoo · 17/06/2021 20:19

If anyone is serious about ordering please let me know. Im happy to buy and courier over. I will charge £10 per service, no matter how big the order. I'm in Cape Town and have been a member of Mumsnet for years. I am happy to PM my credentials and anything else needed.

mbosnz · 17/06/2021 20:20

Could this help?

www.sanza.co.uk/South_Africa_Shop.asp

MaverickDanger · 17/06/2021 20:22

No - there’s an issue with importing anything with dairy from SA and also I think there is a trademark infringement with the name, so you can’t get them here.

Quornflakegirl · 17/06/2021 20:27

You can get other flavour Niknacks but not cheese due to the import of dairy not being allowed. They would be confiscated if sent in a care parcel.

botemp · 17/06/2021 20:27

These are based in Germany, currently the website is closed as they're taking receipt of new stock but open again in a few days. They usually stock niknaks.

EssentialHummus · 17/06/2021 20:44

Thank you all.

The various UK-based websites... they stock all sorts - I'm currently eating koeksisters from one of them - but no NikNaks sadly because of the trademark thing. I did see 2/3 packs in a SAfrican shop in Dagenham that I happened to call into last year sometime, but I expect that was a dodgy import.

bo that German shop - possibly! I have friends in continental Europe who can help with this mad request if they won't deliver directly here.

@isthismylifenow and @Timmytoo I'll PM you if that's alright. Let's have a go.

I want some now 😕

Timmytoo · 17/06/2021 20:56

That's fine Essential, no problem 😊

LeroyJenkinssss · 17/06/2021 21:01

It’s like creme soda which should be luminous green not the clear rubbish they sell here! But sorry UK based as well.

As an aside if any one wants really nice boerewors Limpopo biltong sell lovely stuff and will cut biltong as you prefer - lots of fat and you state the dryness (or wetness) that you prefer!
