I know I might get lots of grief for this but I'm really lucky to be in this position and would like to make the most of it so I'm turning to MN for inspiration. I have been given £1,400 to spend on a treat. It mustn't be something useful but something I would never spend money on myself. And it must one one thing so it can't be three expensive pairs of shoes for example.

I rarely spend so much on a single treat so I'm looking for ideas. Not holidays because I have already saved for a holiday and am not keen to spend this money on another holiday or a spa break or similar.

I am into crafting (but really wouldn't spend this kind of money on it!), interior and garden design, I love entertaining, and would like some facial surgery (keen on those threads that lift your face up). Any ideas? Thank you.

@BIoodyStupidJohnson

It's probably more than £1,400 cos it's 'contact for price' but I'd buy something like this David Shrigley work.
I'll knock you one up for 1k, I reckon I can paint it better.
SinkGirl · 17/06/2021 16:35

😂

Obviously all art is subjective, but after seeing that and that ridiculous Hockney commission for the London mayor, I do think perhaps I’m under charging 😬 I don’t really get most of the digital art, childlike stuff, but I know lots of people like it!

HitsAndMrs · 17/06/2021 16:36

I'd buy a peloton bike!

I know art is totally subjective but that’s absolutely atrocious Grin who in their right mind would display that 😳 I mean, if your 6 year old painted it I suppose you’d feel you had to whack it on the fridge but otherwise…

Terrazzo · 17/06/2021 16:39

Why aren’t you allowed to spend it on three separate things if that’s what you want? Confused I’d definitely buy some nice art! Or a climbing frame for the kids 😄

Lockdownbear · 17/06/2021 16:42

Bike, or other sports equipment.
Bed or something for the house
Musical instrument- digital piano
A pet if I had time
Patio furniture.
Someone to paint my house
New front door.

updownroundandround · 17/06/2021 16:43

I'd probably spend it on creating somewhere special for me to indulge myself doing what I love.......

If you like being outdoors, maybe a decorative garden shed so I have a special space designed for crafting eg. a seated area with a canopy and table, and shelving with spaces for all my different crafting supplies (kind of like the inside of a very well organised garage, with hooks to hang stuff like glue guns, see through containers to keep all manner of fiddly bits etc. With good lighting and a desk mounted magnifier etc

And if you prefer to be indoors, then the same kind of thing, but for indoors.

PiuVinoPerFavore · 17/06/2021 16:44

Definitely some art. A painting you really love and will keep. It would be lovely to have something you can always associate with the gift rather than something that's got a limited lifespan.

AntiWorkBrigade · 17/06/2021 16:53

First thought was a night or two in a good hotel and a no holds barred meal at a top restaurant, but that sounds too much like a holiday.

I think I’d go to a favourite antiques or architectural salvage place and spend up to the £1400 on something unique for the house or garden.

Art is good too, and doesn’t need to be a painting or drawing. There are a number of pottery festivals on during the summer, and £1400 could buy you something really lovely at one of those.

FinallyHere · 17/06/2021 16:53

My top choice would be a party, maybe a lunch or dinner in a private room with my favourite people.

Is this a joke!?!
ToDoListAddict · 17/06/2021 17:19

A good camera? If you like photography it's a very good investment

SleepingStandingUp · 17/06/2021 17:33

@myfuckingfreezer don't worry, this one is more affordable

I agree that the conditions are onerous and risk you not making the most of the gift to comply.

If we're buying expensive art, I'd have this for £1600

ysp.org.uk/shopalison-milner-walk-in-the-park-tile-mural

Or a new drysuit, because being perimenopausal and post lockdown means the one I have is too small Sad.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 17/06/2021 17:57

I know they're about as popular as Ebola on here but I'd get a private number plate.

Or another (big, intricate) tattoo.

Or blow it on lots of champagne

GameSetMatch · 17/06/2021 17:59

If you like entertaining why not hire a chef and have an amazing dinner party, great food cooked by somebody else but in the comfort of your own home?
Or
How about having a patch in your garden converted into a entertaining space?

PennyRoyal · 17/06/2021 18:00

Commissioned piece of jewellery, a piece of art (painting or sculpture) by your favourite artist or a very nice handbag!

TheMotherlode · 17/06/2021 18:02

Ooh, I love threads like this!

I’d probably book a lovely spa break/yoga retreat. Or buy some outdoor furniture. Or a fancy new bike that I would probably never get round to using--

Ylvamoon · 17/06/2021 18:04

I'd really like an antique mantle/ carriage clock. For £1400 you would get a lovely working one.
(... and the added bonus is that it most likely increases in value over time.)

TheVolturi · 17/06/2021 18:05

Im sure there was a post identical to this not that long ago!

soooooooG · 17/06/2021 18:14

I'd spend it on an area rug.

mrsm43s · 17/06/2021 18:37

I'd get a proper wood burning pizza oven for the garden. Not a metal one, one of the brick built ones with the clay(?) domes.

NotMeNoNo · 17/06/2021 18:50

At our company's 25 year dinner, the biggest cheer was for the guy who bought a black Labrador puppy.
I spent mine on art and a bit towards a sewing machine. £1400 would buy a nice Bernina.

OhToBeASeahorse · 17/06/2021 18:58

If you are into food how about an amazing dinner? DH took me to The Fat Duck a couple of years ago, honestly one of the best days of my life

StevieNix · 17/06/2021 19:01

I know you said you don’t want a holiday/ weekend away but honestly that’s what I’d use it for- especially with the weird stipulation that it can only be one item Hmm
I would have a weekend in London- and see a show.
