What time is dinner (or tea, whichever you prefer) time?

Visiting a relative today, and she was making dinner for her children (and herself) at 3.30pm.

Just made me wonder what time you have dinner in your house? Just curiosity really.

I usually make dinner around 7pm but then again I have no kids myself.

@TheCanyon I don’t get in from work til 6, DP either 5.45 or 8.45 depending on the day.

Even with kids, surely you aren’t getting in til like 4pm with the school run etc, it must be manic cooking a serving a meal by 5.30?

dementedpixie · 17/06/2021 11:49

@TheCanyon

530ish, we all eat together. I find it utterly mind blowing that some folks can wait til 8pm or cook two separate meals.
My dh hasn't even left work at that time and then has a 30/40 minute commute. The earliest we probably could eat would be 6.30/7ish
Livpool · 17/06/2021 11:50

Half 5 - 6.

DS usually eats a bit earlier but not much

4PawsGood · 17/06/2021 11:53

Used to be 7-8pm pre children
Then 5-5.30pm when the were tiny
Now 6.30 ish as they are older.

I can kind of see the logic in eating earlier though if they are totally starving after school. They can eat proper dinner food then, and have a snack later, rather than massive snack after school and then not hungry for their dinner.

Vicliz24 · 17/06/2021 11:54

7-8pm no kids

Not if you cook something quite quick eg pasta/something partly prepared already/use a slow cooker.

About 5ish, I’m a SAHM, DH finishes work at 3:30 and we have a 2 year old and 5 month old

riotlady · 17/06/2021 12:15

8-9ish, once DD is in bed.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 17/06/2021 12:34

5.30-6 - that's with 2 very young DC and is the earliest we can manage after work. Its a bit early for DP and I but we cba to spend what little evening we have eating separately from DC!

Pre kids used to be more like 7-7/30

Camomila · 17/06/2021 12:37

On after school club days around 6-6.30, on non after school club days around 5.30. We all eat together, I usually have a cup of tea and snack on front of the tv later.

Purplewithred · 17/06/2021 12:38

He would have it at 17:30 on the dot every evening given the chance. I would go for 7:30pm ish, or whenever I remember/suits me/feel hungry etc. We compromise at 6:30ish, neither of us totally happy.

3LittleDucksQuack · 17/06/2021 12:41

6.30 for when dh gets in as we eat together with the dcs 99% of the time.
I cook for when he's in. If he cooked when in it would be nr 8pm which is too late for dcs.

Only time they eat earlier is if werte having take away later on that they don't like or were going out, so ill do them dinner about 5 so it's less of a rush

wobblyweasel · 17/06/2021 12:48

When my children were little, breakfast was at 8am, lunch at 1pm and dinner at 6:30pm. Now they're grown up and left home, dinner for my DP and myself is anytime from 6-10pm.

MinnieMountain · 17/06/2021 13:47

6pm most nights. DS has supper at MIL’s twice a week, so DH and I then eat around 8pm once he’s in bed.

LittleTiger007 · 17/06/2021 13:50

Between 6-7 pre kids. 5:30 with kids as we feel it’s important to sit and eat together as a family.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/06/2021 13:51

With DH working from home, we currently all eat together between 6-7pm. Pre-Covid, the DC would eat around 5.30-6, and DH and I would eat together when he got home from work, usually between 8-9pm.

Hoping once he gets back to the office that I can push dinner time a bit later (maybe between 7-7.30), so we can still all eat together and I don't have to cook twice.

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 17/06/2021 13:52

(Tea here) we make it around 5ish for the kids and we eat later, anytime between 6 and 8

CoodleMoodle · 17/06/2021 13:57

5:30pm with the kids (7 & 2) if DH is WFH, which he still is at the moment. When he was in the office he didn't get home until 7pm, so we had dinner after the kids went to bed (around 8pm). It was a bit too late for me but easier that way.

idontlikealdi · 17/06/2021 13:58

Pre COVID the kids are around 6, we ate around 830 due to commute. Hated it.

Now we all eat around 6.30

SunSeaSurfGin · 17/06/2021 13:59

Aim for 6:15 but anywhere between 6pm & 7pm depending on what else is going on and what's is being cooked

CiaoForNiao · 17/06/2021 14:01

Between 7-8pm here. Me and 2 teens.

On the very rare occasion they go to their dads house he feeds them at "the proper time" according to him of 5pm. They then have a second dinner or supper* before bed because they are always starving again.

*by supper I mean toast/cereal.

Greenmarmalade · 17/06/2021 14:01

5:30

cocoloco987 · 17/06/2021 14:10

It's different every night depending on what clubs are on and how organised I am so could be any time from about 4.15 to 8.30
