What time is dinner (or tea, whichever you prefer) time?

Visiting a relative today, and she was making dinner for her children (and herself) at 3.30pm.

Just made me wonder what time you have dinner in your house? Just curiosity really.

I usually make dinner around 7pm but then again I have no kids myself.

A variety of times then, although it does seem like 3.30pm is a bit early as I thought. It really did make me wonder and curious about others.

Pre covid it was around 8pm. Now due to no commute etc 6.30 to 7pm.

SmallestInTheClass · 16/06/2021 22:21

@marnna we had some success with the What to do when you dread your bed book. You have to be strict with it, and it doesn't change things overnight, but over a month or so it worked for us.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 16/06/2021 22:23

6:30. My mum used to give us dinner at 5pm as children and I remember always being hungry going to bed. Wouldn't want that for my children.

Marnna · 16/06/2021 22:24

Thank you SmallestInTheClass! And apologies for putting this on the wrong thread! First time user here and not sure what I'm doing 🙈 and also quite stressed!

dudsville · 16/06/2021 22:29

Possibly so, i'm awake from 5/5:30, prefer to have a good few cups of tea before I start to get hungry but then I doalso prefer my big break to be early. Idon't like going to bed full.

irregularegular · 16/06/2021 22:31

7-8. But youngest child is 17 now.
When they were younger 6-7. Never earlier than that, except occasionally to fit round stuff going on in the early evening.

irregularegular · 16/06/2021 22:32

3.30 more likely to be a very late weekend lunch. Which might be called dinner. Could never be our evening meal. It's nowhere near evening.

duvets · 16/06/2021 22:40

5:30/6pm with kids. Would rather eat 7pm eventually but like to eat together.

whatthejiggeries · 17/06/2021 07:27

Around 6.30-7.30 and we have young children but we always eat as a family and I wouldn't be home from work any earlier than that. As a child we are at 6 but I think that's too early

Fruityfriday · 17/06/2021 07:31

I cook ds tea at 4pm. I eat my main meal at lunch and then I just have something light in the evening about 7. Sometimes a crumpet or cereal. I can't stand eating a heavy meal before bed

bert3400 · 17/06/2021 07:34

9.00pm roughly, later at the weekends . Not in the UK so too hot to heat earlier

inappropriateraspberry · 17/06/2021 07:39

Children around 5pm, adults at 7-7:30pm.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 17/06/2021 07:43

Around 6pm.

KatherineJaneway · 17/06/2021 07:47

About 7pm for dinner.

Bookworm19 · 17/06/2021 07:47

5pm with the kids (still very young). DH eats about 6pm when he finishes work.

I prefer eating about 7.30pm myself but just easier this way for now.

InTheDrunkTank · 17/06/2021 07:51

DH gets home (or currently leave the home office) at 7:30pm and we like to have dinner together so that's our official dinner time. The DC are ravenous when they get home from school though so they have their 'first dinner' at about 4pm (which is just leftovers from dinner the night before we don't cook twice!). Otherwise they just fill up on snacks.

3Britnee · 17/06/2021 07:57

7.30 so finished by 8, I do 12-8 IF.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/06/2021 08:01

Between 5 and 6pm. I start cooking at 5 so it depends what we're having as to how long it takes to cook. We are an "early" family though, we have to leave the house at 7.15 for school and work so breakfast is early. I eat my lunch around 12.15pm.

CompanyCrowdFight · 17/06/2021 08:06

7 on the days DH is in the office
Usually 6 in winter, closer to 630 in summer when the Dc have been playing out and need a shower first.
530 on the day DC has sports club at 630.

StarryNight468 · 17/06/2021 08:09

I don't like eating my hot meal of the day late. Sometimes it happens but in my ideal world I would eat my hot meal at lunchtime and have cheese and crackers ect in the evening.

Dc were having school dinners and I ate from the canteen in work pre covid - now I'm having to cook after work and I hate it! I also hate feeling full when going to bed, I usually go to bed at 9.30 and asleep for 10.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/06/2021 08:13

Starry You could always eat a smaller portion and then have the leftovers for your lunch the next day?

It's also not always necessary to cook after work. You could use a slow cooker, batch cook, start things off later in the evening and then finish off the next day. Loads of workarounds if you want to avoid the after work 'cook and eat large hot meal' if it doesn't suit you.

AGirlsGotToDo · 17/06/2021 08:18

5pm for us. Then the kids are in bed by 7:30pm and the washing up, kitchen is cleaned by that time so that we can have a relaxing evening.

Crunchymum · 17/06/2021 08:18

5.30pm for kids (I sit with them and have a cuppa) and 7pm for me and DP.
