If I hear the words "whistle-stop tour" one more time I will slice off my own ears

I should say I am annoyed and irritated in general but this seems to be said daily.

It's so innocuous I don't notice it being said. Who keeps saying it?!

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2021 15:27

Everyone who ever presents anything
"that's just a whistle-stop tour of the topic"

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 16/06/2021 16:56

whistle-stop tour

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2021 16:58

Sliiice left ear off
Swap hands
Hacking at right ear, gristly...done

There you are - a whistle stop tour of me slicing my own ears off

Grin Oh Stealth, you make me nostalgic for the old days when every other thread was full of witty people who made me snort with laughter.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/06/2021 17:02

I do lots of presenting and never say it.

I promise to continue never saying it if people can also stop describing things that are quite good/nice as phenomenal, incredible or stunning.

Where the fuck did that come from?

SpikeDearheart · 16/06/2021 17:03

If you were in the meeting on Monday when I said it, I apologise. I was a bit nervous and I'm not quite sure what possessed me Blush

RickiTarr · 16/06/2021 17:04

Who is saying it? Not that you’ll be able to hear me asking now. Sad

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 16/06/2021 17:05

@StealthPolarBear

🤣
now how on fucking Earth are you gonna wear sunglasses?
duct tape?

Oh yes, been there. It’s the spirit of the cliche goddess.
SpikeDearheart · 16/06/2021 17:08

Makes sense, RickiTarr I like to think I'm not usually quite such a twat.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 16/06/2021 17:11

I usually go with 'so that's it in a nutshell - does that give you the rage as well? Grin

GloriousMystery · 16/06/2021 17:12

I have literally never come across that in a presentation, but it's perfectly possible that's because no one in my field can cram the fruit of their mighty intellects into anything like a 'whistle-stop tour' of the topic.

More like a two-year Grand Tour of the topic with a lot of digressions.

Callingallbutterflies · 16/06/2021 17:21

Is 'well that was a rapid canter though the slides/topic' acceptable? Asking for a friend...

4PawsGood · 16/06/2021 17:25

I’ve been appalled at the use of ‘slide deck’. Might have to quit my new job and go back to the safety of non wankery.

ClaudiaWankleman · 16/06/2021 17:26

Is 'well that was a rapid canter though the slides/topic' acceptable?

Only if it's said sarcastically, after the presenter has monologued for half an hour.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/06/2021 17:41

Is that a reference to the days when we used to write in marker pen on transparent sheets of plastic that were then placed on a huge but extremely basic projection system?

Have these people using the term 'slide deck' even seen such a thing?

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2021 20:44

I was fine with nutshell, but now you've mentioned it.

No no no only use canter if your presentation is informed by horses. Such as the potential new head of the NHS.
I agree about slide deck, threads have been started to complain. And "talk to the slides" - I prefer to talk about them to other humans.

I have sunglasses on a bit of elastic, for the record.

ZootSuit · 16/06/2021 21:56

@StealthPolarBear someone said to me last week yep I can talk to those slides and i just did this Hmm on video call too so they probably saw my reaction. Very odd turn of phrase!

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2021 22:27

Want a whistle stop tour of how I talked to that slide deck?

OP posts:
SilenceOfTheNaans · 16/06/2021 22:29

Yes!! I'm glad it's not just me.

4PawsGood · 17/06/2021 09:05

Yes to ‘talk to’. WTAF! Just why?
