There is a nightingale singing - loudly- in my garden!

It is singing its little heart out in a big oak tree. I heard it last week but couldn’t really believe it and now it is back! I think it is being answered by another one quite far away in the woods.
I’m in Oxfordshire. Been here 10+ years - never heard it before. ❤️❤️❤️

Oh my god!!!! Beautiful! You’re so lucky.

TheBobJog · 15/06/2021 21:45

Oh wow ❤️

Orangeinmybluelightcup · 15/06/2021 21:46

Wow!!! You lucky thing! Please let report your local biological records centre know for their records :D

RealisticSketch · 15/06/2021 21:47

I'm so happy to know this! Thank you for sharing. Somewhere in a little corner there is a nightingale singing and another replying. I feel all warm and fuzzy now. 😍

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/06/2021 21:50

I’ve never heard one but I saw a video recently of a guy who’d managed to get a recording of one in the car park of a service station in Reading!

We live in west London so don’t really get anything too unusual, but there’s a scrubby patch of land not too far from here that had been earmarked for the new Brentford training ground- but they can’t use it now because there are quite a lot of skylarks there! You can hear them and see them. I got so excited.

Marmite27 · 15/06/2021 21:51

Tell it to be quiet, it’s against mn rules to sing in your garden. Silent contemplation only Grin

Delphigirl · 15/06/2021 21:54

Isn’t it fab? I heard it a week or so ago but wasn’t sure what I was listening to and DH was away. So I told him I thought I heard one and he said “that’s nice dear” or similar. Then just now we have the door open and he is watching the football and it started up so loud it drowned out the crowd!! And we checked the song on YouTube and there is no doubt. I hope he stays a while!

Who can I report it to please? I’m so excited!

Wonderful!

mineofuselessinformation · 15/06/2021 21:54

You are very lucky. I've only ever heard one a couple of times and they are beautiful singers.
Maybe get some feed that they like to encourage them?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/06/2021 21:57

@mineofuselessinformation they only eat invertebrates and berries I think, they won’t be tempted by bird feed. If he’s settled in for singing though I’d say yes perfectly happy!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/06/2021 21:57

*he’s

Delphigirl · 15/06/2021 22:02

He has moved into my neighbours garden and is still singing intermittently...

Wow. You are so lucky. I’d love to hear a nightingale.
They do sound a bit like a modem starting up - but in a beautiful way (I think)

Saisong · 15/06/2021 22:06

It's weird I don't think I'd ever heard one in the wild, then in the last couple of years they keep cropping up around here - at least 5 times in different places. We had one in the garden last year at this time, and this year one was about in April - so early! This is Hampshire/Surrey border.

Grastenia · 15/06/2021 22:06

@Delphigirl

Lucky you. Thank you for sharing this with us. It’s awesome you knew what it was and went to enjoy it. I have heard one only once before - in central London of all places! Woburn Square Gardens.

Oxfordshire is full of nature. I have seen glow worms there near Islip.

Delphigirl · 15/06/2021 22:10

Oh can I post a video? I did capture some of its song!

Delphigirl · 15/06/2021 22:13

Sadly not. But pleased I have it to listen to 😍

I'll let you off the stealth brag under the circumstances

Cocolapew · 15/06/2021 22:16

How did you know it was a nightingale?

Delphigirl · 15/06/2021 22:17

It was so distinctive and unlike anything else. And I checked it against some audio files on t’internet...😁

Grastenia · 15/06/2021 22:18

Now get this, if you can.

Remember that sound. Now picture the bird and imagine the size of its lungs. Maybe two large peas.

All that came from just that....

AlfonsoTheMango · 15/06/2021 22:18

How exciting!
