There is a nightingale singing - loudly- in my garden!

It is singing its little heart out in a big oak tree. I heard it last week but couldn’t really believe it and now it is back! I think it is being answered by another one quite far away in the woods.
I’m in Oxfordshire. Been here 10+ years - never heard it before. ❤️❤️❤️

It was probably an egg last year.

PainterInPeril · 15/06/2021 22:21

@Delphigirl Aw, lovely!

Although it reminds of a time when I heard some very rowdy birds singing...at 2 o'clock in the morning! Was staying in a caravan at the time. A night or two later a branch (from the same tree the birds were in!) fell on the roof of the van. Grin That was an....interesting week!

For your sake, I hope the nightingale puts a sock in it at a decent hour.

Delphigirl · 15/06/2021 22:21

Incredible, really @Grastenia! The physics of that amplification must be quite something...

How exciting. I've checked one out on YouTube so I'm ready if I hear one Grin

Delphigirl · 15/06/2021 22:22

I’m happy to email my recording to anyone who wants to hear it...
@PainterInPeril that’s hilarious

How wondrous ❤️

@SmidgenofaPigeon nightingales do visit west London! There was a nightingale in Gutteridge Wood during May, and another at Minet Country Park. Sadly they seem to have moved on now though.

Nightingale song.

The Wren is pretty amazing. Doesn’t get much publicity but it’s awesome too.

Arctic Terns have no song, but eggs that hatch in the Spring are young birds that fly from pole to pole in just a year.

Attenborough is right. The climate change challenge isn’t about saving the planet. It will always be here. It’s about saving humans. The birds will still sing.

PainterInPeril · 16/06/2021 00:17

@Delphigirl It wasn't at the time!Grin GrinThe birds were so loud that I couldn't sleep, there was nothing I could do to shut them upAngryGrin...and the branch scared the life out of me at 5am!Shock It fell on the roof right above me. I thought I was going to get squashed!Grin

Do you live in Berkley Square?

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 16/06/2021 01:23

Lucky you. I'm bombarded by a chaffinch everyday. Fucking thing is seriously annoyingGrin

Silkiecats · 16/06/2021 01:26

How lovely. We have lots of singing birds here including some 3am singers, not sure what they are but they sing their little hearts out and are very cute.

longwayoff · 16/06/2021 08:20

Skylarks in Brentford ? Amazing with all that redevelopment going on. May they stay forever.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/06/2021 09:17

This is where the skylarks are- it’s not exactly Brentford but I mentioned Brentford as they were due to build on it for their football club.

Absolutely wonderful to read this!!! They are so rare now. Thank you!

We're treated to blackbird at sunrise for a chunk of April/May every year. Quickly gets to the point where I wish it would find somewhere else to sing it's little heart out. But I'm obviously a total misery as I listened to the Nightingale recording expecting something really beautiful and it sounded no better than the blackbird to me. It's great though to know they're around as they are a protected species as their numbers are low.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/06/2021 09:50

I’m going to shout out for the dunnock too! A plain little brown bird but their song is also lovely ☺️

Near where I work there’s a blackbird that in the autumn has a ‘stage’ set out on the Ariel on top of the local pub. I love walking past him! One day it was the afternoon and I walked past the pub, and I could hear in a hedge a very quiet version of his usual belting song. You’d have to strain to hear it. I went closer and it was the blackbird- he was rehearsing for his evening’s performance 😍

longwayoff · 16/06/2021 09:59

Thanks heavens that stadium isn't there smidgeon what an inappropriate place that would have been to site it. Phew!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/06/2021 10:01

@longwayoff it was going to be a training ground but there was a huge local uproar about it- happily!

TroysMammy · 16/06/2021 10:04

I wish I had something so melodious. Instead I've got cheep, cheep, cheeping sparrows and magpies at it all day long

longwayoff · 16/06/2021 10:05

Glad to hear it. W. London not short of football grounds.

HappydaysArehere · 16/06/2021 10:07

Always remember the story of the Emperor and the nightingale and longing to know what the nightingale sounded like. Years later I decided to read the story to a class of children so got a recording from the library. Every time the nightingale’s song was mentioned I would press the play button.

Years ago, I worked for a company based in Berkeley Square. I worked at a regional office.

I arranged for us to join up with the Wildlife Trust and support them financially and also provide labour a few days a year to help them with their work. One time, we were out clearing some scrub and the ranger stopped us and made us listen to a nightingale singing.

I had to do a write up for the company newsletter and I headed it "[company name] hears the nightingale sing, but not in Berkeley Square" :)

Cocolapew · 16/06/2021 10:41

I have cheeping sparrows too, they have nested in my eaves. There's swifts, collared doves, blackbirds and thrushes in the trees opposite my house.
I get rudely awakened by bloody schreeching magpies, they just scream Confused. I hate them.

PainterInPeril · 16/06/2021 12:38

@Cocolapew Shock How can you hate magpies?! Grin There were 6 of them where I live but now there's only one left 😭(Sad) I love all the birds here; magpies, pigeons/doves, gulls(ok, maybe I don't love gulls quite so much!Grin), sparrows, wren, wagtails (both pied and yellow), various tits, blackbirds, starlings, crows, rook, and any others I see. 😍 😍😍😍😍
