Cat Food Recall

Don't know if any of you have seen the thread in the litter tray but there is a recall on certain brands of dry cat food due to a possible link to a blood disorder.

The affected brands are AVA, applaws and Sainsburys hypoallergenic dry.

The link seems to be the factory they are manufactured in.

Other brands are also manufactured there, the code you need to look for is
GB218E5009

Can you link to the recall?

dementedpixie · 15/06/2021 20:15

I dont think they've established a proper link yet

It's only a possible link but they are recalling as a precaution

OP posts:
thanksforallthewhales · 15/06/2021 20:18

I'm not very good at links but if you go to the litter tray thread in pets there's morr details there

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 15/06/2021 20:19

Are they actually recalling it though?

thanksforallthewhales · 15/06/2021 20:43

I've tried to do a link but I'm hopeless, if you go to the urgent warning thread in the litter tray in pets there's a link to the recalled products

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 15/06/2021 21:01

I've checked the bags of applaws I have but they aren't an affected batch as they came from zooplus and starts with FR rather than GB

thanksforallthewhales · 15/06/2021 21:05

thanks pixie, dd1+2 have tried to show me how to do links but nopeGrin

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 15/06/2021 21:07

I use and around the link to make it click able

thanksforallthewhales · 15/06/2021 21:08

I'll keep trying, one day I'll succeed!

The Royal Vet College is investigating a sudden spike in cases of severe pancytopenia in cats (it affects their bone marrow). It's mentioned on a number of veterinary websites over the last few days.

smileyplant · 15/06/2021 21:15

Thanks for flagging - we feed dcat Sainsbury dry and had no idea! Just chucked it in the bin (she was very confused)

Chihuahuacat · 15/06/2021 21:25

@thanksforallthewhales thanks for sharing!

I started the thread over in the litter tray and I am completely invested in spreading the news due to my personal experience.

I have been feeding my cats Sainsbury’s hypoallergenic for a number of months as one of my cats has a sensitive stomach.

On 18 May we noticed she was lethargic and kept her inside to keep an eye on her. On 21 May we took her to the vets who diagnosed her with Pancytopenia- essentially lowered blood count. We took her to a specialist hospital for an emergency blood transfusion but nothing could be done. We had her put to sleep on Saturday 22 May. We then switched food for our other cat (to IAMS) purely because he didn’t need the hypoallergenic food.

At the time the vet didn’t know what caused it, but mentioned there was a spike in cases (it’s usually very very rare).

A group of people who had similar experiences to me started a Facebook group and the one common factor was the cats were being fed a grain free diet from a particular factory.

It might not be the cause and we’ve all fed into the Royal vetinarary college so they can analyse if there are any possible other causes, but given what we’ve seen so far, I would really truly recommend you check your food just in case.

The Facebook group is Pancytopenia in cats awareness group and it’s full of similar stories to mine.

The factory number is this attached (starting in GB).

These have now all been officially recalled.

So other Applaws foods from different factories should be OK? Mine seems to originate from France (FR62894050)

thanksforallthewhales · 15/06/2021 21:30

Yes, just seems to be the ones from that factory

JustJoinedRightNow · 17/06/2021 09:28

I’m so sorry about your DCat @Chihuahuacat.

Thanks for bringing this to everyone’s attention

Chihuahuacat · 17/06/2021 09:47

@JustJoinedRightNow thank you.

I’m taking my other cat in for blood tests today just to be on the safe side. He seems fine and hasn’t eaten the food since 22 May but as we don’t know if it’s chronic or acute I’m getting him checked.

I’ll report back afterwards

This is really important to get the message out. Please keep this thread active.

mybrainhertz · 20/06/2021 22:26

Mine eats Applaws wet food in tins, I think that's okay though.

It's a right worry. I keep reading the list. I feed Royal Canin dry food, but I worry in case I've misread.
