@thanksforallthewhales thanks for sharing!
I started the thread over in the litter tray and I am completely invested in spreading the news due to my personal experience.
I have been feeding my cats Sainsbury’s hypoallergenic for a number of months as one of my cats has a sensitive stomach.
On 18 May we noticed she was lethargic and kept her inside to keep an eye on her. On 21 May we took her to the vets who diagnosed her with Pancytopenia- essentially lowered blood count. We took her to a specialist hospital for an emergency blood transfusion but nothing could be done. We had her put to sleep on Saturday 22 May. We then switched food for our other cat (to IAMS) purely because he didn’t need the hypoallergenic food.
At the time the vet didn’t know what caused it, but mentioned there was a spike in cases (it’s usually very very rare).
A group of people who had similar experiences to me started a Facebook group and the one common factor was the cats were being fed a grain free diet from a particular factory.
It might not be the cause and we’ve all fed into the Royal vetinarary college so they can analyse if there are any possible other causes, but given what we’ve seen so far, I would really truly recommend you check your food just in case.
The Facebook group is Pancytopenia in cats awareness group and it’s full of similar stories to mine.
The factory number is this attached (starting in GB).
These have now all been officially recalled.
