Can we have a brand new spooky thread?

ImprobablePuffin · 14/06/2021 20:14

Inspired by the thread about places that creep people out, I wondered if we could have a spooky experience thread or just unexplained happenings?

I know there are historical threads about this type of thing but thought it could be time for a fresh one.

I personally have never seen a ghost but I've had uneasy feelings in places and my grandparents swore blind they had a ghost cat in their house. I also have a family member who woke up in a barn whilst working on a farm and screamed his head off because there was an old craggy lady looming over him grimacing.

(And all those desperate to tell us ghosts aren't real, it's all hallucinations etc etc we see you, we hear you but you don't need to tell us.)

Love a spooky thread!

No time to add stories just now as up with smallest one... please Mumsnetters, give me something good to read. Grin

There have been a few places, only old buildings, where I have suddenly felt very dizzy and uneasy ony feet, like I was on a ship.

The strongest instance of this has been in the natural history/ Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford. Both times I visited with years apart. Down in the toilets. I often wonder if other people experience similar and whether it can be attributed to anything spooky.

There must be some stories to be shared....?

I love a good spooky story (as long as it's real!) I've had a few experiences. The one story I read was about the spirit of a lady known as "the Manchester mummy". It seemed so fascinating. Then I googled it and it's true. The lady was called Hannah Beswick. If you have time, Google it. It sent a little shiver up my spine when I read it!

4LeafClover21 · 14/06/2021 21:45

I know this isn't my experience personally. But its a really interesting story.

I haven't seen a ghost or anything but something a bit strange happened once. We were driving on the motorway to see family. The song 'albatross' by Fleetwood Mac came on. Nice and relaxing. Then my DH spotted a van that said 'Peter Green' on it. Didn't mean much to me but DH said Peter Green was the man who wrote the song. Bit of a random co-incidence we thought. Then the next day it turned out that he had died and it was on the news. Confused

Years ago when I was a student I had just started dating a young man and late one night we were in his room sat on the bed watching TV.
We both very clearly heard someone shout bf's name, twice. His housemate's room was down the hall, and we thought housemate might be in trouble/ I'll (he had bad asthma I think) so my bf goes off to check on him.

As he's out of the room, the bed I'm sat on starts shaking violently. I jump up, and standing on the middle of the room look back at the bed and can see it visibly shaking like someone is pushing/rocking it. I turned the light on and it stopped.

BF comes back and says that housemate is fast asleep. We stayed at mine from that point on.

I swear my old house was haunted. Before I moved there I was absolutely adamant there's no such thing as ghosts.

It was a semi built in the 20's. The attached house was occupied by an older couple, their adult son and his girl died who were at a guess in their late 30's.

In our house was me and the dds. Things moved in that house from the outset enough to make me question my sanity. Constant banging and scratching all hours of the day and when next door family were at work and I know they had no pets or anything else that made noises.

The baby crying still gives me the shivers. I would hear a baby crying and race upstairs but the dds (who weren't even babies) would be both fast asleep. When I met my dp he didn't believe me until he stood in the dds bedroom watching them sleep with the sound of a screaming baby as if it was in the room with us - no next door didn't have grandkids or visiting babies or anything plausible. Next door is the last house in the road. Other next door is a retired couple with no babies!!!

It’s not mine, but my Nan, who isn’t very woo at all swears blind that this is true. My Nans first child passed away not long after he was born. Years later, around the time of his death, my Nan was in bed and heard my aunt come into her room in the middle of the night. She felt my aunt get into bed next to her and my Nan cuddled her but she felt really cold, when my Nan said out loud how cold my aunt was she realised there was nobody in the bed at all. She believes it was her eldest coming back to say goodbye.

Years ago when I was in my late teens, my family had left me in the house on my own and gone to visit family. I had been in the house alone for a while. I decided to take a bath. Whilst I was sat in the bath, I suddenly heard footsteps on the landing outside of the bathroom. These footsteps were going up and down the landing, then they stopped. Then I could hear someone bouncing on my parents bed. Bearing in mind I was home alone. The footsteps began pounding in the attic. Then I heard the bouncing on my parents bed and the footsteps continued running up and down the landing. I was freaked out. I eventually came out of the bathroom and locked myself in my bedroom until I was dressed, then went to explore. There was no explanation for the noise. My parents duvet had the indentation in as if someone had been on the bed but I just couldn't explain it. Attic door was untouched? And... I had been so panicked I forgot to wash the shampoo out of my hair 🤣

We live in an old farmhouse, one of the servants (teenage girl) was murdered by her lover in the 1840s. My son looked up one Christmas when he was unwrapping his presents and said that someone had just walked through the front door, got to the foot of the stairs and vanished. He said he saw a white figure sitting on the window seat in the girls old bedroom looking out over the moor. My husband heard a girls voice from the kitchen when myself and the children were out, and our kids didn’t like playing in the playroom (where the girls body was laid out after her discovery on the moor) as they always felt they were being watched. Is that spooky enough?

I worked as a barmaid in an old pub. One evening, some of the regulars were having a lock-in after closing time. I had been working so hadn't been drinking.

I was sitting with my back to the door when I heard the distinctive creak of it opening. I was startled, thinking that the police were coming to raid the session. But whoever entered the pub went around the far side of the bar, which was a square in the middle of the room. I clearly heard heavy footsteps on the wooden floor and then the sound of a man's voice, incoherent and mumbling angrily by the back door, which I knew was locked.

As no one else seemed to be concerned at the intruder I went over to see who had come in. There wasn't anyone there. The people sitting by the back doors confirmed that no one had passed. In fact, the front door was still locked from the inside.

I didn't see anything, but I have a clear recollection of what I heard.

smudgemylife · 14/06/2021 22:26

A local nature trail that I walk regularly borders really picturesque cemetery at the far end. It's always so quiet and peaceful, (I hardly ever see another person unless it's the weekend). well maintained with gorgeous trees and a beatiful stream running through so I always so a lap before heading back.
One day I noticed an inpecibly well dressed woman, I would say late 20s, kneeling at a headstone, laying a small handful of yellow flowers and talking to herself. She was wearing a brown 2 piece suit and a pussy bow type blouse that looked a little out of place for her again but gorgeous non the less.
As I walked around the far side, she got up and walked towards the gate, I clearly remember her heels making the clacking sound as she walked.
I headed back towards the gate myself, and glanced at the commonwealth stone she had been tending to. There were no flowers there now I passed, even though I saw her clear as say placing them on the grass there! I looked up and she had totally gone! I picked up my pace to see if she'd left the gate and made it onto the road, but nothing.
It's a long, straight road with no turn offs for some distance so no way she could have got out of my sights that quickly.

My childhood home was very atmospheric, I lived with grandparents and their children all of whom saw and heard things . I never did although the house at times scared me. My aunts and I slept in the same bedroom. One night my aunt got up to nip to the loo , as she opened the bedroom door she saw a woman in the landing at the top of the stairs . The woman walked straight between the two doors through the wall . Some time later my grandad saw the same woman materialise at the top of the stairs . My uncle had his own room , and once woke up to see a figure at the end of his bed . We all heard whispering at night but I Always thought it was my grandparents.
After my grandad died , my nan went to bed late one night . The next morning she came down to find all her crafting drawers out and piled up on top of each other in the centre of the room . The house was bought by a property developer and gutted - the rooms Reconfigured and extension added . I often wonder if the new owners ever saw or heard anything. The place looked so different though.

I've just remembered one experience I had about 14 years ago.
I'd not long been in a relationship with dp and had gone to his house to stay for the weekend as his parents (who he still lived with were going away).
We were sat upstairs in his room watching TV and dp said he was going downstairs to put a couple of pizzas in the oven.
Two minutes later I caught a glimpse of him through the mirrored wardrobe walking across the landing and towards another room.
I shouted 'that was quick' bit got no reply.
I carried on watching TV and dp walked into the room about 10minutes later. He'd put the pizzas on and been in the garden with the dog- said he hadn't been upstairs and honestly looked puzzled.
Later that evening we were downstairs in the lounge enjoying a bottle of wine when I looked at a photograph on the sideboard.
The man in the picture looked just like my dp and he was wearing a white shirt.
I immediately remembered him as the man I saw on the landing. It came to me that he had been wearing a white shirt too and when I looked at my dp and saw him in his bright yellow football shirt my blood ran cold.
The picture was his cousin who had died many years ago and who spent a lot of time at the house.

Our first home was a farmhouse, in an isolated area.
I had heard there was ‘something’ but not really bothered about it until until one evening when the noises in the bedroom above the living room sounded like the children were jumping off the beds and running around the room repeatedly. It was so loud and the ceiling light was swinging.
My DH said he’d go up and sort it, crept up the stairs intending to catch the DCs, threw open their bedroom door and.....nothing. The noise instantly stopped, both DCs were asleep in bed (and certainly couldn’t have gone from running around in a split second).
The next morning the children complained about ou ‘moving the furniture around downstairs and being noisy’
There were other unexplained incidents too, but oddly I never minded being alone in the house.
😱

I had a dream a couple of years ago about a person I had never met.
We where friends on FB and Twitter through a shared hobby.

She came to me in a dream I don't remember what was said.
But she killed herself the night I saw her.

Talking of doppelganger,I was feeding my youngest ds and was looking out on to the landing.
Seen my middle D's come out of the toilet and in to his room across the way.

Literally 2 seconds later the same D's came upstairs and in to his room.
He hadn't been in the loo and had been downstairs all the time.

I did nominate the strange vibe place thread for classics. Not sure if MN will give it a new home, though. There is a part two of that thread, so don't forget to check that out. Smile

Will share my own (not necessarily spooky, but very heartwarming) experience in a bit.

Another story

My Aunt was alone in the house one day doing the housework.
She went out to peg out the washing.
From the yard she looked at the house and as she did she saw the net curtain slowly move back into place as if someone had been watching her out of the window.
She is very non-woo but actually went out the back gate and to my Nans who lived across the street and asked her to come back home with her.
