Would you be offended at this?

I went to a car boot sale this morning and was just browsing on a stall with a rail of clothes.

The woman whose stall it was came over to me and said 'I've recently lost lots of weight. My old clothes will be perfect for you'. This woman was a bigger size than me after losing her weight, and she started sifting through a box of clothes and getting them out. They were probably double my size.

I said 'No thanks, they won't fit me' and she started saying that she thought they'd fit me perfectly.

I just glared at her and walked off. Why would someone do this? I've got a history of eating disorders and low self esteem so it probably upset me more than it would upset someone else.

This is the second time this sort of thing has happened to me in a few months; the first time I was browsing in a charity shop and the woman who worked there said she didn't think the section I was looking at would fit me and directed me to a section with bigger sizes.

Yes I would and have been regardless of how well meaning they might of meant it. What she could of said I have more clothes or if you looking for any particular size or items I have some stuff still to put out.

I have had people comment on my size at both end of the scales. Never once have I asked for their opinion. Either too thin or fat.

MissCruellaDeVil · 13/06/2021 19:16

Gosh, that is really rude of her, although a simple oversight to make. Why can't people just keep their mouths shut?

DidSheGetOffThePlane · 13/06/2021 19:17

I could tell that she was being unkind, as she was smirking when she said it. I'm a size 8 currently and saw that one of the dresses she tried to foist on me was a 22.

Or, she's just trying to sell it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Honeycombskl · 13/06/2021 19:19

As someone who also had a long term eating disorder I do think I'd be upset by it but try not to let it get to you. It sounds like she was probably delusional about her size in comparison to other people.

Honeycombskl · 13/06/2021 19:21

I could tell that she was being unkind, as she was smirking when she said it.

In that case she's clearly just a twisted arsehole. If you have low self-esteem do you come across that way? I think there's people who are like vultures and hone in on that to hurt the people they feel are less likely to respond or who are most likely to be affected by it. Some people are just dicks.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 13/06/2021 19:22

You are a size 8 and folk direct you to bigger sizes? How odd.

Moonshine11 · 13/06/2021 19:22

She’s trying to flog it to anyone by the sounds it

Yes I probably do come across as being a bit low in self esteem. I do find that people do sometimes take advantage of that, unfortunately.

Sounds like she was trying to have a bit of a laugh with you as her clothes obviously were too big for you.

OppsUpsSide · 13/06/2021 19:26

It is. Once sounds sounds unfortunate, twice is very odd indeed.

flippertygibbit · 13/06/2021 19:36

It seems really strange not one but two people have directed you to the plus size section?

TheRebelle · 13/06/2021 19:55

I’m a 16 and I’d be insulted if anyone tried to sell me a size 22! OP you need to practice your “fuck off face” and use it in these situations. I’ve never forgotten when I was buying shoes in a fashion shop and the petite shop assistant asked me if I found it hard to get shoes for my “humongous feet” and laughed.

NationMcKinley · 13/06/2021 20:00

I’ve had this. Twice. First time my very PA great aunt sent me a dress as a birthday present. It was a size 20. I’m a 12. When I told her it was lovely but the wrong size (I wondered if she had the receipt so I could swap it) she said ARE YOU SURE??? Hmm

Second time my cousin tried to give me her size 16 top that she’d “slimmed out of”. I’m by no means skinny and could absolutely lose a few pounds but both of these were ready odd.

Worriesome · 13/06/2021 20:02

That sucks OP, are you super sensitive or are these people just plain rude x

bumpdownthestairs · 13/06/2021 20:04

She will not have thought you are a size 22 if you are a size 8, she's either lost the plot or thought you were easy prey to make a sale! I honestly wouldn't give it another thought.

blacksax · 13/06/2021 20:09

I am on the larger size and visit charity shops regularly. I've also been going to car boot sales for decades - nearly every week apart from lockdown last year. And I can honestly say that nothing even remotely like this has ever happened to me.

You must be really unlucky OP.

WorraLiberty · 13/06/2021 20:09

Huh? Confused

That's quite something to leave out of the scenario in your OP

She sounds quite mad.

MamaRaisingBoys · 13/06/2021 20:16

Was she joking? Maybe the smirk was actually a small smile at her joke, made because a size 8 woman was looking at plus size clothes?

HeddaGarbled · 13/06/2021 20:21

I said 'No thanks, they won't fit me

Pot kettle black?

moovinon · 13/06/2021 20:22

It sounds like she was just having a bit of a joke with you if the clothing was blatantly 100 sizes too big.

Nocutenamesleft · 13/06/2021 20:44

You’re a size 8. But she tried to give you a size 22 dress?!? Not once. But twice?

I’m a size 8-10. I’ve never ever had anything remotely happen.

Just. What?!? Would you try to give someone a size 22 a size 8 dress?!?

Sparklesocks · 13/06/2021 21:35

That’s very a strange incident.

Sparklesocks · 13/06/2021 21:49

But no I don’t think I’d be offended, if I was a size 8 I’d very obviously not be plus size or near a 22 so I wouldn’t assume she was trying to imply otherwise because it’s clearly not the case. Im guessing she was just trying to push a sale and trying everyone.

VainAbigail · 13/06/2021 21:51

What did she say after you punched her in the face?!

Rude cow!
