Best comeback to scam callers?

Losingthewilltolive999 · 11/06/2021 14:41

I’ve been called four times today by the ‘National Crime Agency’ to be told that my national insurance number is about to be revoked.

The number is a normal mobile number. I rang it back once out of curiosity and a lady answered whose elderly mother has also been on the receiving end of this stuff - it seems they’re mimicking other peoples numbers so it doesn’t just show as ‘unknown caller’

It makes me so annoyed. Is there anyway to inconvenience these CFs? If I don’t hang up will it hold the line and waste their phone bill? Or should I just come up with a good comeback?

I don't think it's possible to mimic someone else's phone number? I could be wrong though.

If you have an iPhone you can set it up to ignore potential scam calls.

If not, just block them.

JustLost101 · 11/06/2021 14:50

It's called number spoofing and it's really quite common. The spoofed will just use numbers for a period, then ditch them for a new one

JustLost101 · 11/06/2021 14:51

The spoofers sorry

when I see a number I don't recognise I pick up but don't say a wonder. I stay silent.
it fries their brain🤣 and call gets disconnected automatically.
then I block the number so the same one can't call me again

I used to take the absolute piss.
random fucker: have you been involved in a car accident?
me: when?
rf: recently
me: which car are we talking about?
rf: registered under your name
me: in which country?
rf: same as your residence
me: was I pregnant?
rf: were you injured?
me: so when was this? was the dog in the car? what was I wearing? mum is that you?
rf: -----

I got one of those recently. They announced themselves as NCA and asked if I was Mrs Elliott. I told them that they had my name wrong and that my name was Dame Lynne Owens. They then did the spiel- took them a while to twig I wasn't completely taken in (Lynne Owens is the NCA Director General).

winteroversummer · 11/06/2021 14:53

I say 'I'm really sorry but I'm just not interested, please would you take my number off your list' and they're always very polite and I tend not to get a call for a few months.

They're just people doing their jobs

5zeds · 11/06/2021 14:55

I ask lots and lots of questions and then tell them if they were my child I would be deeply ashamed of them and that they are thieves. I don’t get many calls now but the longer you talk the less time they have to take from someone more vulnerable.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/06/2021 14:56

*don't say a word!!!

not wonder🤣 stupid autocarrot

iklboo · 11/06/2021 14:56

They're just people doing their jobs

These aren't cold callers trying to sell something. They're scammers trying to steal money from people by tricking them into giving their bank details. They're scum

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/06/2021 14:57

@winteroversummer

they are just doing their jobs
🤣
ah, the Nazi defence

romdowa · 11/06/2021 14:58

I just play along! I have great fun with them. I tell them how awful my car crash was and that my lambo is how a write off and that I'm stuck driving the porche now 🤣🤣🤣

GintyMcGinty · 11/06/2021 15:02

Usually I am polite but sometimes if I am bored I use these ones I have picked up off of the internet.

With the car crash people I've tried a few things.

They say its the accident that wasn't your fault. I reply saying I have loads of accidents and they are all my fault cause I am a really bad driver.

Another time I said yes I have had an accident but I am not allowed to talk about it. When asked by who. I reply by 'them'.

Today when being threatened that my internet service provider was going to cut me off I told them to go ahead as I could do with saving the money.

None of it works. They still call no matter what but sometimes its a bit amusing to try things out.

sometimescharlottesometimesnot · 11/06/2021 15:02

I play along too! yes just logging into my laptop. .oh yes how do you spell that. .e.,did you say e? oh no hold my computer's very slow. .....I like to see how long I can keep them on the line!

JustLost101 · 11/06/2021 15:40

Number spoofing is illegal and a scam, it certainly isn't someone just doing their jobs ffs 🤦‍♂️

Oh yes, people just doing their jobs. Scamming people out of thousands of pounds.
Moonshine11 · 11/06/2021 15:47

I have fun playing along with them.

AmandaHoldensLips · 11/06/2021 15:53

I let them go on and on while I go uh-huh, uh-huh, then when they're finished I say "I'm sorry can you repeat that please?"

I repeat, and repeat, and it drives them mad. They always eventually hang up. Some of them swear at me.

It's good fun.

AmandaHoldensLips · 11/06/2021 15:54

Sometimes I start singing.

longwayoff · 11/06/2021 15:56

Blah blah your recent accident
Sorry, I died in that accident so I can't talk about it now
They usually disconnect before I do.

Buzlightyear1 · 11/06/2021 15:59

I had one the other day I asked really nice and polite can you please take me off the list. The lady said well if you don’t like it then don’t answer the phone to us as we will keep calling you any way 🤦‍♀️ Since then I let my 4 year old have a chat to them as he will just go on and on and on 🤣

Slub · 11/06/2021 16:16

I had the national insurance number scammy one this morning.
I just replied with a breezy Good Morning You Scamming Twat

Their end click brrrrrrrrrr.........

Grin
mybrainhertz · 11/06/2021 16:44

I tell them the person they're after has died.

No, they are criminals trying to defraud you. We are not talking about cold calling sales people here
Nicolastuffedone · 11/06/2021 17:18

I had the NCA yesterday from a mobile number. I don’t usually answer numbers I don’t know, but I was waiting for a call. It was an automated one, but I hung up as soon as they said who they were
