Gross washing machine etiquette.. would you wash these?!

DP often has skid marks. Do you wash these?! I hate the thought of them in my washing machine and I have actually thrown some away at times. Am I on my own here?!

@Sparklingbrook

If you soak them first you then have pooey pants and a bowl/bucket of pooey water. What will happen to the bowl/bucket? Confused
You pour it down the toilet and wash the bucket.
SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 10/06/2021 14:24

@pinkypink24 Nope - that’s about it. Thanks!

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 10/06/2021 14:28

@Sparklingbrook Have you never soaked baby vests? The water etc gets flushed down the loo and the bucket gets scrubbed with Dettol.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/06/2021 14:28

@pinkypink24

bionic plague?
like "rise of the machines" virus robots?

Megan2018 · 10/06/2021 14:31

I wash nappies in my washing machine. Don’t be so ridiculous @Heltid Hmm

PawsQueen · 10/06/2021 14:43

Just add some laundry disinfectant, I use the fabulosa one when I wash cloth pads

jellybeansforbreakfast · 10/06/2021 14:47

Well, I put DHs underwear in without looking. He works on sites all cover the place, occasionally has issues with access to loos, loo roll etc, occasionally has issues with takeaway tum. I can't get too worked up about it. Then again he usually does his own washing.

That and we have a dog, he occasionally has repercussions from his street cleaning activities, or just the heat - and his shit stained and everything goes into the machine too!

Not something I've ever really thought about. Washing machines clean things, after all.

bunburyscucumbersandwich · 10/06/2021 14:58

@Heltid

I worry that it will remain in the machine, the bacteria, that will then go on other clothes! I’m a bit of a worried about cleanliness
Wash them on a hot wash and stick some detol in the tray.

Run a cleaning cycle afterwards then, either with disinfectant or just a 90 C wash.
AramintaArrowsmith · 10/06/2021 15:29

@jellybeansforbreakfast that sounds revolting. Who are all these men who can't clean themselves properly? To the extent that it's staining their underwear on a regular basis.

jellybeansforbreakfast · 10/06/2021 15:33

Revolting? It's inevitable if you work away, do overnights, on the side of motorways, up mountains etc. He has little choice, nor do many of the people who work on the infrastructure we all take for granted.

Knowing he is usually a very clean, well kept man I won't embarrass him by acknowledging something that probably caused him some distress at the time.

RickiTarr · 10/06/2021 15:41

@00100001

why are people bothering with dettol in the wash, when there is perfectly adequate washing powder for such things? Confused
It’s a placebo for people who think washing machines are contaminated by dirt. Wink
BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 10/06/2021 15:46

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool

That’s a bit mad. Washing machines are for washing dirty things in.
100%

Why are skid marks any different to other soiling? Underwear will often have traces of wee, blood etc. as well.

The wastefulness of some people never fails to astound me.

BlondeRaven · 10/06/2021 15:48

I will happily wash DHs undies (occasionally with skids) & socks but only things that go in with them are my own knickers and socks, they don’t get mixed with other washing especially DCs. I have health issues with bad gastro problems so there is probably more bacteria on my underwear than his, even if I do wipe my arse properly. I wouldn’t trust him to wash them out separately, the water wouldn’t be hot enough and water splashing everywhere from the sink ewwww. They go on a 60 degree wash on their own and use I use dettol in wash.

If your worried about germs in the machine regularly clean it, put it on a 90 degree wash with nothing in it. You can do a wash with just white vinegar or use one of the dettol machine cleaners. I clean my machine every couple of weeks to maintain it and I’m also a germ forb, I have a compromised immune system so I am extra cautious. I recently heard also putting a dish washing table in the machine on a hot wash is also good to clean it.

Also there is probably more poo germs on my DCs underwear from them using school toilets and not wiping properly which is another reason I keep washing separate.

Happynewtier · 10/06/2021 15:50

Op have you asked him why this happens? I certainly wouldn't be washing my DHs shitty pants. I'd purposely leave them out of the wash until he ran out of pants, and tell him to, quite literally, sort his shit out.

Gilead · 10/06/2021 16:28

I have a stoma. Occasionally it will leak. I am not throwing away too, knickers, trousers, towels.

BigMamaFratelli · 10/06/2021 16:39

DP has Crohns so has the occasional small accident and dss often has skid marks as he's 6 and his bum wiping is hit and miss, and I just stick everything in the washing machine and chuck in some Zoflora. Job's a goodun Smile

Andylion · 10/06/2021 17:07

@DarcyLewis

Your adult partner isn’t toilet trained Confused
I'm rolling my eyes at all the posts about how that is what the washing machine is for when this is the issue.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 10/06/2021 17:18

Mumsnet baffles me sometimes. Who would throw away clothes rather than washing them!? The world has gone mad.

Yes. And please, don't tell me about the comfort station. The reality is often very different from the legislation. Especially if you don't work for the main contractor and are first and last on site.

Or did you mean that A N Other country would have lower sanitation levels?

It's not really rocket science. And I have never understood the MN disgust with bodily functions, toilet cleaning etc. Sometimes shit happens, literally!

PickAChew · 10/06/2021 17:33

I put worse through my washer, daily, as I have a severely autistic teen. Sometimes twice, though

MyAnacondaMight · 10/06/2021 17:39

I get your point. I maintain that quick cycles at 30 are nothing but a germ tombola. But 60 degrees, biological powder and a long cycle would satisfy me.

I use laundry cleanser for gym wear, as it generally can’t handle the heat and needs something to kill the germs. Vinegar would do, too - but the Dettol stuff smells nicer.

aiwblam · 10/06/2021 17:40

People wash nappies they have scraped shit out of. So your dp’s pants will be ok in the wash. Perhaps wash them at 60 and tumble them. I’d apply washing detergent directly to the skid mark and wash shitty items separately from other stuff.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 10/06/2021 17:46

My DH gets them all the time... of course I just wash them. He should wipe his arse properly of course, but never mind.

If you are that bothered, put in Dettol antibac solution. I tend to reserve that for 30 deg washes that have bacteria heavy items, or any temperature wash that involves 'fluids' caused by sickness. Pants washes would be 40 degs so hot enough.
