Martin & Jackie Goodman

JustAGirlFromHoe · 09/06/2021 20:44

We’re currently rewatching Friday Night Dinner (bitter-sweet) and have realised that Martin & Jackie’s jobs are never mentioned.

What do you imagine them doing? I see Jackie as a secretary/PA or doctor’s receptionist and Martin as some sort of engineer although my DH thinks he’d be an accountant.

Any other suggestions?

Not an accountant, he's too interesting Grin

I think engineer or college tutor for Martin. Jackie I see as a legal secretary!

fudgecat · 09/06/2021 20:46

Martin -cdt teacher
Jackie -school secretary

supermodel · 09/06/2021 20:46

Hadn’t thought of this before! I don’t think Jackie works, she still sees herself as a SAHM and I can’t imagine what job Martin could have! And what about Jim, what does he do?

Martin definitely an engineer in an obscure field. Jackie - hmmm. I am loathe to place her in a traditional supporting role and that house looks pricey. How about a GP? She's the sensible one

MissingTheMoonlight · 09/06/2021 20:51

Jackie is the receptionist at some sort of medical clinic; somewhere she could have a little snoop at patient's records.

Martin is an architect at a firm where he is seen as a bit of a dinosaur but can't be fired (despite multiple attempts).

lemonbiscuit · 09/06/2021 20:52

Martin- def an engineer of some sort. Jackie- maybe something admin related or a receptionist. Although I have wondered if they are both retired.

Springchickpea · 09/06/2021 20:55

They live in a pretty nice house … but I’m not really sure whether I see Jackie working. But she could be like a shit hot lawyer or something. Martin is a specialist in something nobody else understands.

SandlakeRd · 09/06/2021 21:01

Jackie must have worked at one point as they had the episode with the au pair. Unless she was just out with Auntie Val slagging off Sheila Bloom 🤣

Like others I think Martin is some sort of engineer. Jackie maybe a teacher? I think they would be too young to be retired. God knows what Jim does! Perhaps he lives off inherited money. If he works he must work at home as he would never leave Wilson on his own!

JustAGirlFromHoe · 09/06/2021 21:04

@VienneseWhirligig I see what you mean but think he could be a dark horse; quiet at work but bonkers at home.

@supermodel OMG Jim! Can’t even begin to think what job he does!

I like the idea of Martin being a teacher. Imagine if he was your chemistry teacher, no-one would be safe! 😂

Jim works for the council and is avoided by everyone in the office.

LynnInAVan · 09/06/2021 21:12

Martin’s definitely in science or engineering, I think Jackie worked as they had Gibbs the Nanny

‘HE HAS THE FAT LEGS!’

gabsdot45 · 09/06/2021 21:32

I've always imagined Jackie being a doctors receptionist too.
I think Martin is a science teacher.

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/06/2021 21:34

I love this thread.

NOTANUM · 09/06/2021 21:38

Martin - dentist
Jackie - SAHM/volunteer in food bank.

GreenClock · 09/06/2021 21:44

It think that Martin is an engineer and that Jackie works p/t in an admin role. I bet she was involved with the PTA at the boys’ school.

Jim inherited that house I reckon. I bet he was born in it.

Kjr33 · 09/06/2021 21:47

Martin had those dirty science magazines but I think it’s a red herring and he is something really dull like a civil service lawyer
Jackie it has to be something where she can be a bit nosey maybe admin for social services….that’s how she met Jim

InTheNightWeWillWish · 09/06/2021 21:48

I think Martin is an engineer in a really niche area, something like detecting the pheromones for squirrels about to mate. I imagine Jackie in the civil service. She took the secure job while Martin was trying to crack his niche area and took the job that would give her flexibility for the kids and to cook a big dinner every Friday night. They’ve got a nice house and had an au pair so it would appear she worked and it’s unlikely they would get an au pair if she was in a support role. Adam has also evidently had numerous music lessons growing up so I think they both probably needed middle class jobs.

Jim I think probably worked remotely. That would probably lend itself to something in IT or maybe something in historic records. He’d definitely have several HR complaints against him if he was in the office and around people.

StillWeRise · 09/06/2021 21:54

I would have said Martin was an engineer, but DP pointed out how crap the caravan was
I agree Jackie pt admin role, she will have been on the PTA and now helps at the foodbank. Or possibly CAB.

YouLookSoCool · 09/06/2021 21:57

At one point Jackie was doing a counselling course but don't know if she ever qualified. I agree with Martin as some kind of niche engineer but always assumed he was now retired.

fairgame84 · 09/06/2021 21:59

Jim probably works as a meeter and greeter at a national trust type place.
Or maybe a traffic warden.

Jackie would be a secretary/clerical person.
Martin could be something in physics. Although he would be too hot working in a lab with a white coat.

StillWeRise · 09/06/2021 21:59

that's true
but to be starting a counselling course at her age suggests she has been doing something quite different thus far

callingon · 09/06/2021 22:00

I think Martin has defo been highly paid in an obscure field, is now semi retired, and Jackie hasn't worked since the boys were born.

Martin reminds me of a few dads-of-friends I knew growing who were all really weird but earned loads of money as doctors/lawyers/engineers/IT consultants.

callingon · 09/06/2021 22:03

Jim I always imagine as someone who lives off benefits but whose parents bought a house in North London for £20 in 1962 (or something...) and he lives in it for free and is probably a hoarder.

YouLookSoCool · 09/06/2021 22:04

Yes Jim is 100% a hoarder
