What items are in short supply this summer ?

Yesterday a news item popped up on my screen about items being in short supply this summer , when I went to look at it later I couldn't find it

I know cement and decking boards are in short supply and I cannot find the simple straight sided beer glasses / tumblers anywhere ( down to two having broken a few ) and a friend said a while ago cat food was in short supply

I wondered what else was mentioned in the article and what else anyone has found difficult to get hold of this summer ?

Decking boards and other building supplies were in short supply during the first lockdown Plaster was, also.

There was an item on the bbc news last night about it too. Garden furniture (a family had theirs stolen and couldn't get replacements) and bbqs etc - anything to do with people anticipating summer at home in the garden really.
I thought we'd struggle to replace our fire pit but managed to get one in the end.
It's a combination of lockdown, Brexit and the Suez canal having been blocked for a while.

Garden furniture

I’m not sure what was in the article but I should imagine paddling pools and gone above ground pools will start to run low on stock soon.

Babypug · 08/06/2021 16:47

I just read it was garden furniture, such as parasols, chairs etc

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/06/2021 16:48

Plumbers.
We've booked several quotes, only one has turned up and then never replied. Our bathroom must be too small a job.

DH has decided to do it himself now.

sylbunny · 08/06/2021 16:50

I heard it on the news ... it's outdoor stuff and garden furniture. Kids outdoor toys etc. Part brexit part lockdowns.

I believe the glasses are due to a glass shortage recently again relating to brexit

Hire cars at certain times, or else the price is more than doubled.

stuntfarter · 08/06/2021 17:04

I wondered if it was just me with the glasses , wanting a specific 'plain' type glass but it did seem odd as I would have thought they were the most sold basic
Yes plumbers ! Harder to find than hens teeth , I guess lots of DIY and building materials as they were not produced or imported since covid , but to be honest mid 2019 some types of wood were difficult to source

There is a global silicon shortage as well so computer chips are in short supply. This means all kinds of electrical equipment (from cars, phones, computers, TV etc) are hard to get or gone up in price. Think production is going back up but there is a big backlog

Krook · 08/06/2021 17:11

Gas bottles for BBQs apparently

oldwhyno · 08/06/2021 17:14

certain types of paddling pool!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/06/2021 17:16

I wonder if there might be a surge of buying fridges & freezers, especially the ones suitable for outside - because of anticipated parties at home.

we were given an old outside fridge freezer by a friend 3 years ago.
we borrowed it for a big party but then they realised they didn't want it back so we ended up keeping it.
it happened to die last year and we had quite the trouble replacing it as everyone was buying extras!

pinkysmum · 08/06/2021 17:16

I was in Go Outdoors today and the guy on the bike stand was saying there is a country wide shortage of bikes and they didn't expect to get any more in in this side of Christmas.
I expect some of this is due to delays caused by the Suez Canal fiasco.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/06/2021 17:17

I'm also wondering about camping gear

Nekoness · 08/06/2021 17:19

I’ve been trying to buy an above ground pool (the £100-300 range) since March 2020. Every website was anticipating shipments then lockdown hit and they’ve never come back into stock anywhere.

PinkPlantCase · 08/06/2021 17:20

Birth pools, to buy new they’ve been out of stock for months and a lot of hire places are fully booked quite far in advance.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/06/2021 17:23

@Nekoness

there are some on Amazon, rectangle shape too.

Took several months to get my DD a bike last year, she looked like she was on a clown bike her outgrown one was so small!

Tickets to the local zoo at the weekend. Fortunately we are 5mins cycle so go after school.
