Sorry, couldn't find the news topic. This has just made me so angry today. What is it with make entitlement? They think they can just do what they want with us women?

@NiceGerbil I just checked the internet and actually you got the sequence of events wrong. The rape in real life happened first and was a major event in New York at the time. The CSI episode aired the next year.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 00:26

It was in the local paper though! It wasn't in the USA Confused

Why are you googling out of interest? I mean your call obviously but I'm interested as to why?

My general point was that men can and do, do all sorts of weird shit and you can't warn a child about every possible situation because they're endless.

My other question would be. What the fuck were the CSI people thinking of making an entertainment prog out of a real thing? I thought the situations were made up. That's really awful. I haven't looked at your link admittedly.

callmemaybee · 09/06/2021 00:36

There’s nothing wrong with fact-checking.

It’s more likely that any “copycat” attack was inspired by the original attack, not CSI, as the original event had high media exposure as it was a major trial at the time. It’s completely possible that local UK papers reported on it at the time due to this.

Crime documentaries and shows in general can be considered distasteful, let’s be honest. There is something morbid about recreating of the events of someone’s death for entertainment. There’s also a sister argument that even faux-crime like a made up rape on a show is morbid too.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 00:40

No there's nothing wrong with fact checking of course.

I tend to do it if it's something pivotal.

But the general point.

I saw the prog.
I saw the report in the local paper a few months later.
I have no idea if he copied the prog or the other thing. I assumed the prog as it was fairly recent and I'd never heard of the other thing before you mentioned it.

But what does this have to do with the general point that you can't warn your children or be on your guard yourself for anything that a man might decide to do. Given the infinite possibilities.

And also the fact that most of the time they don't mess around with elaborate deceptions because they will always be able to find a victim they can overpower/ who is on their own etc etc.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 00:42

I agree that the prevalence of rape as just a thing essentially for titillation is grim.

It was an episode of CSI in the 90s that first made me realise it, funnily enough.

Shall we get back to the topic though?

ClingFilmAndGafferTape · 09/06/2021 02:27

Where has the uproar and the rage gone? Why aren't we still protesting that #womenlivesmatter? I'm still fucking angry and I'm there, where has everyone else gone?

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 02:36

The media attention died down.

They got the guy.

In the end women are murdered every week. Most aren't reported/ known.

The attention on this case was unusual.

The other problem is that to tackle the issue of sexual violence against women and girls challenges so much of what is accepted in society.

In this case the 'monster' has been caught and that's that.

Why he wasn't caught earlier, why the police etc aren't really interested in sex offences until essentially there's a body, why even then headlines like killed her because of affair (on the murderers evidence) are common.

About things like sex offences in schools, what happened in Rotherham etc and is still going on. About widespread attitudes to women and girls through society. Victim blaming.

Etc etc.

I'm angry all the time.

But to change this is just too hard, and means confronting some massive societal issues. And also, talking about men as a group which is never ever popular.

Easier to say.

Why did she walk home
Why did she go with him
He's a very rare and unusual monster and he's been caught

End.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 02:37

'But to change this is just too hard, '

I mean at a societal level.

Personally, I'm out of ideas though.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 09/06/2021 02:53

Surely if the Met had arrested him & charged him with the flashing offence a few days earlier & also suspended him from duty, then maybe Sarah Everard would still be here?
The Met are just as culpable for allowing this to happen when Sarah's rape, kidnap & murder may have been avoidable.
I hope heads will roll.

I really hope that if anything positive can come out of this is an inquiry as to how widespread and damaging the institutional sexism in the police (in this case the Met) is.

Yes it will be a whitewash, but let's turn the heat up on these guys, any step forward is good, no matter how little.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 15:05

Oh no idea why my post was deleted

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 15:05

It said essentially no heads won't roll nothing will change.

Bloodyfuckit · 09/06/2021 15:15

@Hallyup6

Absolutely agree with *@June2021*. Don't tar all men with the same brush. The majority are perfectly respectful individuals. Women are just as capable of committing sick crimes if they're that way inclined. It's nothing to do with him being a man and everything to do with his warped mentality.
You need to do a bit more reading and a bit more thinking quite frankly.
TracyBeakerSoYeah · 09/06/2021 16:26

@NiceGerbil
I managed to read the deleted posts before they were deleted & I think they were deleted because they mentioned something that most likely would be brought up at trial or could not be mentioned as it could prejudice the outcome of the trial.
It was something you mentioned that I am aware of & many others are but not everyone, iykwim

@callmemaybee

He'd never heard of 'the hole's the goal' or 'you don't look at the mantelpiece while stoking the fire' and was appalled by it. He'd also never heard of 'pigging'.

To be fair, I haven’t heard of those either. It must be a local thing in your area

Its 'every holes a goal' round our way, oh and 'one up the bum, no harm done'
NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 17:09

Ah ok yes that makes sense

EmeliaKate · 09/06/2021 17:32

I couldn't sleep last night, thinking about Sarah Everard again. It's unbearable thinking how terrified she must have been as she was driven out of London and how her family are coping, knowing that she died in that way. It's all very distressing. RIP Sarah Thanks

Bluedeblue · 09/06/2021 17:54

Do we know if he was known to her, or was it just a random attack?

I think there's going to be a back story to this.

shdodnbek · 09/06/2021 20:10

😭 it's just exhausting.

Up until Sarah I hadn't appreciated how easy it is for men. To be free. To walk about alone at night, to explore somewhere on their own, to stay in a hotel alone and not have the compulsion to double check the lock, or the wardrobe or under the bed.

The shadow cast over all women is huge.

We need to continue to share this plight but I just don't know how.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 20:18

We've been talking about it forever and all over the world.

Women and girls have always had individuals/ groups etc who have tried and tried.

Yes it's awful.

No I don't know what to do.

covetingthepreciousthings · 09/06/2021 21:20

I don't think there is. I think some hope there will be to try and make sense of how this could happen, but sadly I think it's going to be one of those rare cases of complete stranger kidnap etc. It's just all so awful.
MyGhastIsFlabbered · 09/07/2021 12:16

Now he's pleaded guilty to murder. It all sounds so calculated.
