I think this must be one of the most random things I’ve puzzled on

Picked up a chicken yesterday (dead not alive), and suddenly thought how undignified it looked without it having the string tying its legs together

I mean...it’s a dead chicken. Not really dignified anyway but having its legs like that is just the cherry on the top for the poor chook

Plus, apparently, that cut grass you smell when you cut the grass. That’s the grass screaming out a warning to other grass that they need to be careful as something is hurting them

The fuck is the grass gonna do with a warning? Run away?!

PainterInPeril · 06/06/2021 20:00

Oh my goodness! Octopi and squid are so creepy. Especially since I found out they can escape through the tiniest gap. 🐙🦑😱

PainterInPeril · 06/06/2021 20:03

@WarmSausageTea Well, I'm not eating that! What kind of caterpillar is it?

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2021 20:06

I've heard that about grass too. That's why it has that newly cut smell , warning other grass that it's under attack!
Not that the other grass can do anything though !

Soubriquet · 06/06/2021 20:12

It’s a bit of a bizarre warning really isn’t it

“Watch out!! Danger...wait. It doesn’t matter. I can’t move anyway”

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2021 20:15

'The other mans grass is always greener .. 'maybe it's the hard grass that knows it will grow back and it'll be fine!

Soubriquet · 06/06/2021 20:18

Saw this yesterday. Now this describes how fucked up nature is sometimes

don’t click if you get freaked out by spiders and other weird things

I spend way too much time thinking about this sort of thing. Probably why I can’t get anything done!
Things like, if the plural of goose is geese, then why isn’t the plural of moose meese?
Why do centipedes have so many legs when worms seem quite happy with none? Or maybe they aren’t happy and have leg envy, and centipedes go about lording it over worms with their abundance of legs. Bastard centipedes.

PainterInPeril · 06/06/2021 20:26

@Soubriquet Some of those made me laugh....apart from the snake ones! I don't think I'll sleep well tonight!😱

Soubriquet · 06/06/2021 20:27

I was a bit creeped out by mummy huntsman and her thousand babies

PainterInPeril · 06/06/2021 20:29

Can you imagine being a female centipede and having to shave your legs every few days? I think that would de-Veet me.

Soubriquet · 06/06/2021 20:30

I would do what I already do...I don’t shave Grin

My hair is very blonde apart from around the ankle where it is quite dark but it’s covered by socks so it’s ok

WarmSausageTea · 06/06/2021 20:40

Sorry, @PainterInPeril, some MNers identified it, but I can’t remember the name, and now I can’t find any posts about it. Google has a LOT of caterpillars, but I’ll keep looking and let you know if I turn anything up

WarmSausageTea · 06/06/2021 20:50

Found the thread, consensus was that it was a vapourer caterpillar.

Tlollj · 06/06/2021 21:24

Thanks everyone who answered my pig / pork question.
Now who was it, do we think first ate an egg? Just picked it up and bit it shell and all? Or maybe someone dropped one and they ate it off the floor. Or copied an animal eating a dropped one.

PainterInPeril · 06/06/2021 21:52

@ @Soubriquet Can you imagine a centipede's sock drawer?! Especially if they were very fussy about matching pairs!

@WarmSausageTea Thank you. I'm getting a fit of the vapourers just looking at it....

Also - did someone see a cow's udder and think "lemme go suck on that and see what happens"?
Soubriquet · 07/06/2021 11:56

Makes you wonder on cows milk really doesn’t it?

So, they see a calf drinking the milk and decide “I’ll try some of that” and likes it.

But then, why isn’t sheep’s milk more popular. Surely in the olden times, sheep were more plentiful than cows.

What about horse milk?

I know goats milk is used and camels milk is popular in some counties but still.

So why not other animals.

OP posts:
PainterInPeril · 07/06/2021 13:23

Maybe cows are a little more docile than sheep. Maybe sheep are more ticklish!Grin

Tlollj · 07/06/2021 13:36

A cow produces more milk I expect. So there’s more to go round.
We don’t eat horses though do we as a rule. Too valuable as transport perhaps.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/06/2021 13:59

I imagine it's easier to milk a cow too, larger and more malleable tests compared to smaller animals.

I always imagined that they'd have fed it to their babies first when they couldn't access other milk and then kind of moved up the ages. Kinda of gone "well it works for the cows, it's that or death".
And yes, horses milk would be needed for the horses to raise more expensive horses up Vs food

Not to mention the person who saw an oyster and thought “If I pry that rock open, I’ll find an edible treat!”
Ormally · 07/06/2021 17:33

Oysters - there are seafood tanks in the floors of the Neolithic house remains at Skara Brae on the Orkneys, so they think they were raising oysters and cockles and so on, in the nearest thing to a home 'fridge' once they were harvested.

TheDogsMother · 07/06/2021 18:18

@Confusedaboutlots

prawns are the worst - it’s a whole village on your plate! that shocked me when i started thinking about it
Oh no ! I think you have just ruined my prawn eating enjoyment for ever 🤣
