I think this must be one of the most random things I’ve puzzled on

Picked up a chicken yesterday (dead not alive), and suddenly thought how undignified it looked without it having the string tying its legs together

I mean...it’s a dead chicken. Not really dignified anyway but having its legs like that is just the cherry on the top for the poor chook

@Tlollj

Why are pigs called pork and cows called beef but lamb is lamb?
Pork and beef are from the French porc and boeuf. Those words were introduced with the Normans. No idea why lamb didn't become agneau at the same time, but probably because we didn't eat lambs then- we ate sheep instead. (mutton > mouton)

According to Susie Dent from Dictionary Corner on Countdown. On her podcast " Something Rhymes with Purple"

It's something like Cow & Pig come from old English because it's the words they used on the farm and bringing up livestock.

Then the French / Normans came along with their culinary skills and they called the cooking produce beef & pork from the French Boeuf and Porc

Large prawns look like caterpillars to me - I often think about this when I peel them, but it doesn't stop me eating themGrin

JumpLeadsForTwo · 06/06/2021 17:58

Bit like finding memo!

Stop peeling and eating caterpillars you absolute delinquent

For the plurals: It's because it's a consonant before the y so "change the y to an i and add es".

Monkey and bogey have a vowel before the y so just add s.

Bigfoots is wrong. There is only one bigfoot.

My child read a red reading book about Reading.

Cough bough plough hiccough...

I LOVE English.

PainterInPeril · 06/06/2021 19:19

I really wish I wasn't allergic to prawns now! I've just had a salad and potatoes for tea, prawns would have been delicious, rather than boring old tuna! Blush

"Though the tough cough and hiccough plough him through
"Yes! You’re eating Kevin! How could you? Might be Katie.

Eat caterpillars like @JumpLeadsForTwo
PainterInPeril · 06/06/2021 19:28

Caterpillars....bleurgh! Although, saying that, I wonder what caterpillars taste like?... After all, birds like them.
Anyone fancy nipping out to your garden to try one and report back? I don't have any in mine.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/06/2021 19:31

On second thoughts, Don't eat baby butterflies, they're magical.

Ormally · 06/06/2021 19:36

They are definitely magical.
Look up how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. Not just the Eric Carle version, possibly the zombie version.
They have patches on their bodies that are destined to turn into legs or wings (so experimenters have actually attempted to graft wing spots to legs and get the body bits to emerge where the patches were), but I think I remember that the whole of the caterpillar turns completely to chrysalis soup in the pupa so goodness knows how it reconstitutes.

Soubriquet · 06/06/2021 19:40

Caterpillars are a fascinating anomaly really

We did the butterfly kit last year and the kids were amazed at watching the caterpillars turn into butterflies

@Soubriquet How do I get hold of a butterfly kit, please? It sounds intriguing.

Soubriquet · 06/06/2021 19:44

here you go

I got the very hungry caterpillar version but this is the company that supplies the butterflies

Still have the enclosure. Going to get some new caterpillars this year

I think if anything is proof of alien life it's Octopuses / Octopi / Octopussies????? and butterflies

WarmSausageTea · 06/06/2021 19:59

This dropped onto my leg last summer. I was equally appalled and fascinated. (And might have started a post about it at the time.)
